Maryland 2024

Going into the '23/24 season I thought Maryland was overrated in the pre-season predictions. They simply had no depth, as evidenced by the pt Jordan Geronimo received. They actually were worse than I expected because highly-regarded swing freshman Harris-Smith had a rough go, especially in the first 2/3 of the year.

This year's team has the same overall look, with star transfer Gillespie taking over from J. Young, and highly-rated freshman Queen being the 2nd big man in place of Donta Scott; however, I like this roster better as it is deeper, and the outside shooting should be improved.

Here's the likely rotational players:

--6'1" Jakobi Gillespi (TR)
--6'4" Seltan Miguel (TR)
--6'9" Julian Reese (TR)
--6'5" Deshawn Harris-Smith
--6'4" Rodney Rice (TR)
--6'10" Derek Queen (FR)
--6'9" Tafara Gapare (TR)
--6'6" Jordan Geronimo
--6'5" Jahari Long

6'3" Chance Stephens is a Soph RS who transferred from Loyola Maramount and had some decent #s there as a freshman. I'm not sure why he red-shirted last year, so he might compete for pt. 6'4" Malachi Palmer is a freshman rated in the 120s in the '24 class.

My thoughts: I know Young was everything to them last year, but I think Gillespie will be at least as good this year. His #s at Belmont last year were outstanding, and his game may have more balance to it than did Young's. The first 4 guys look like sure starters. Rice would seem the most likely 5th starter at the beginning of the season. Queen was a top 10-15 rated recruit; given IU's involvement with him I watched him play on TV. As I recall they were playing IMG Academy. I wasn't as impressed as I thought I'd be; regardless, he's he's a huge recruit for MD. He did look to me to be a low post center....not sure if he and Reece can play together a lot. Bottom line....MD has a little more depth going into this year, with 6 guys looking starter ready. Gapare & Geronimo are ok as depth pieces, but depth is still not a strength. Harris-Smith has to be a lot better this year than last for them to be BT contenders. They look like a 6-7 place BT team unless he breaks out.

Battle for Atlantis should be fun

Hopefully Hoosier nation sends 800-1,000.

I'm predicting the bracket to be setup like this

Providence is replacing Creighton in Battle for Atlantis..

Indiana- Arizona- Davidson-Providence-West Virginia- Louisville-Oklahoma-Gonzaga.

I'd make these the pairings:

Gonzaga vs Davidson
Indiana vs West Virginia (First ever meeting)

Louisville vs Oklahoma
Providence vs Arizona

I was just listening to the highway men.

Willie, Waylon, Kris and Johnnie.
They All had different jobs, all a part of our collective. They all knew that their individual efforts, moved the next generation forward.
That was easy to type, since they didn’t question if their following generations would work to destroy the very thing, that gave them the freedom to commit generational suicide. But here we are.

I fly a star ship, across the universe divide, and when I reach the other side. I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can.
Perhaps become a highway man again, or I may become a simple drop of rain…. But I will remain……

Y’all (me included) need more Bama time! Except bowel of course, he’d be in a constant swirly, head in the turd bowl.

Ok, I think that’s all I had to say. Night all.

I think our assistants are living up to their salary.

I think Coach Ya might be one of the best AC in terms of recruiting in the country with NIL in place. With his connections and salesman approach, backed by money, wow. This off season has been insanely impressive. Just crazy to think of the off season transactions we made, because that is exactly what happened. Kanaan, Rice, Ballo, Tucker, Hatton, and Goode. I think Goode is the only one that comes to IU without NIL.

I really wanna be a fly on the wall with the conversations that happen. Everything is legal in terms of talking dollars and cents from NIL. You can promise money amounts while recruiting. How far we have come.

2027 class

A bit early but the 2027 Indiana high school class looks quite promising

C Ben Ly 6'10" looks similar to Moreno at this stage. Not as far along but alot to like.
F Kenneth Lamply 6'7 looks like he's already 18. Very similar to Anthony Thompson since his growth spurt.
F Jaylen Mitchell 6"8 we've all heard of this guy. Top 10 nationally. I haven't seen him in person. We need to get him on Indy Elite.
G Cooper Zachary 5'9 He's been a YouTube star since grade school started for Fishers. I doubt he gets much taller.
G Jason Garner Jr. 5'11 Another short Fishers guard. But if he turns out like dad....

* My favorite out of state player is Darius Wabbington from Arizona. 6'11" 230lb Man Child. The staff is trying to connect with Prolific Prep a bit now, Not sure if it will get anywhere. I think when Tyron Stokes went out there we lost our momentum with him.

Michigan @ IU, Game 2: Early run barrage beats Michigan, 11-2...

This game is on BTN.

IU is in the position of having to win the last two games of the series. When you lose to a team in Game 1 that hit just .156 at the plate, you wonder if this team can even salvage the series. A lot of things would have to happen, but there is a scenario where IU could miss the B1G tournament, so they need at least one win in this series to avoid that slim possibility.

It's RHP Connor Foley on the mound for IU with an ERA of 4.10 in 52.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.20 with an OBA of .158.

It's RHP Chase Allen on the mound for Michigan and he had an ERA of 6.52 in 58.0 IP and a WHIP of 1.66 with an OBA of .304.

1st inning:

T1st:

Foley got the leadoff hitter on a grounder. Foley then walked a batter on a full count. With the next batter having a full count, the runner stole 2nd.

Foley then walked another batter on a full count to put runners on 1sat and 2nd.

Foley gets a grounder with the batter reaching 1st on a FC with the runner out at 2nd and the lead runner taking 3rd and two outs and runners on the corners.

Foley has thrown a lot of pitches in the inning, and he went to another full count on a batter, but he got the hitter on a shallow pop out to retire the side with runners stranded on the corners.

B1st:

Taylor walked on a full count to lead off. Pyne flied out and Mitchell was hit by a pitch to put two on and one out.

Cerny doubled to score Taylor to give IU another early lead at 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out. Brenczewski hit a SAC fly to score Mitchell to give IU an early crooked number for what seems like forever.

Cerny was at 3rd with two outs. Tibbitts hit a double while taking 3rd on an error and IU was up 3-0.

Mathison was up with two outs and Tibbitts at 3rd. Mathison beat out an infield grounder for a single and Cerny scoring to make it 4-0 IU. Three of the IU runs were earned. Stadler flied out to end the inning.

End of 1st: IU 4 Michigan 0

NIL budgets for IUFB & IUBB

I’m trying to work through the potential implications of the likely House vs. NCAA settlement, specifically the assumption that the student compensation pool could be up to $22M. I’m going with the assumption that, for Title IX reasons, men’s sports teams will get half the number, so $11M. I’m also assuming that $1M goes to non-revenue sports leaving $10M for Football + Basketball.

** How do you think a $10M compensation pool compares to the current combined IUFB + IUBB NIL pools? **

Michigan @ IU, Game 1: Lack of offense (again) cost IU, 3-2...

DH today because of weather.

LHP Ty Bothwell is on the mound for IU with an ERA of 5.21 in 65.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.20 with an OBA of .260. The batting order is the same as it was at Nebraska.

RHP Kurt Barr is on the mound for Michigan with an ERA of 3.67 in 73.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.26.

1st inning:

T1st:

Bothwell put them down in order to include two Ks.

B1st:

Taylor hit a homer to leadoff. Pyne and Mitchell both grounded out. Cerny then singled and Brenczewski flied out to end the inning.

End of 1st: IU 1 Michigan 0

Golf guys

Who do you have winning the PGA Championship this weekend? I want to lay some $$ on Justin Thomas (hometown guys playing on one of his home courses). I would be getting good odds, might just do Top 20 finish as it is +220.

I also like Ludvig Aberg possibly to win it all (+3500) or at least a top 10 (+280).
