Where can Jews

HMT, not saying your remarks about Communist professors influencing education at Brandeis, Columbia, Berkely, and Yale since WWII aren't without some truth.

Nevertheless, having a hard time believing it and would appreciate some proof to support your position.
Here you go.

Dewey:

Communists imported to key academies during WW2:

  • Leo Lowenthal, a German-born sociologist who taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and was a prominent figure in the development of Marxist thought in the United States.
  • Herbert Marcuse, a German philosopher and sociologist who taught at Brandeis University and was a key figure in the development of the New Left movement.
  • Erich Fromm, a German psychoanalyst and philosopher who taught at Columbia University and was a prominent figure in the development of Marxist thought in the United States.
These scholars, along with others, helped to establish Marxist thought as a major force in American academia, and their ideas continue to influence academic discourse to this day.

So, based only on this being your support for your earlier assertion, in response to your question about what was not truthful, I'd probably say something like "all of it".

At least, none of this supports the super broad conclusions and assertions you made.

And you seemingly reject outright the practice of philosophy and exploration if it approaches some bugaboo word you personally think is taboo.

I think academia attracts people further left. Einstein, Oppenheimer, Hawking were all basically socialists and hard scientists, not liberal studies.

I know a lot of faculty, most are moderate liberal. Only a couple are far left.

go to college? Have the democrats and their Gen Z thugs at eastern colleges determined the answer?
This Jewish girl at UCLA would like an answer to this question. My goodness these people are paid thugs. I found out that Qatar gives money to colleges and they are funding some of these protestors. What you have to ask is out of all these protestors how many are part of the school and out of those at the school how many are receiving funds to protest.

I go back to statistics class and the bell curve. I think most of America is in the middle (myself included) yet both parties are controlled by the far right and far left whackos. These people have the loudest voices and control the narrative even though the majority of people are centrist. It's really dangerous and sad that it gets perpetuated. Given Biden's approval rating, or lack thereof, the Republicans should be able to easily regain the white house by running virtually anyone other than Trump. Conversely, the Democrats should easily win the white house by running virtually anyone other than Biden given Trump's popularity, or lack thereof. And yet here we are with two really horrible candidates and it will be a toss up that whomever wins, the other party will claim election stealing.

HMD, appreciate the information and it brought back some fond memories.

Hadn't thought about John Dewey in a long time. My parents (circa 30s and 40s) were avid John Dewey protagonists and very concerned about the direction colleges such as Chicago and Harvard were going.

Noticed the link about John Dewey mentioned that he was opposed to Soviet communism.

Interestingly, the University of Chicago where Dewey was once very influential later become the institution favoring the economic philosophy of Milton Friedman.

My university, which has from time to time been called liberal, stresses learning the economic theories of all major economists throughout history while not endorsing any particular school of thought. This is my kind of liberalism.

I hate both candidates for president, this is a horrible year that future historians will never be able to explain.

On other levels though, I think safe seats are largely to blame. The primaries tend to attract the true believers, the hard core. In a safe seat, they might as well vote for the person furthest in the fever swamps. If districts were competitive and the unaffiliated were the swing vote, there would be a need to weigh electability.

Also it would be fun to eliminate the Rs and Ds from ballots. Just list the name. If people got in there and looked at just the names and thought, "I saw A's ad and I liked it, he must be my party" we might do better. We aren't a parliamentarian system, voting just party affiliation shouldn't be a consideration.

I am sure in California this happens in reverse, but the ads in Indiana right now are crazy. "Here is a video of candidate A saying 'deity', which has the letters 'DEI' in it, he is clearly a marxist, BLM plant. Vote B, they have never said any word containing those three letters together and will fight to make all words with those letters illegal." Again, I am sure in solid blue states this is also happening.

I know what a rino is, who can explain a rino squish?

And throw in how advanced AI is and the influence on voters. I mean I’ve seen people believe clips from video games as fact.

Is this the modern version of Orson Wells reading, "War Of The Worlds" on the radio and people believing it? I do see this as troubling with AI. I have told my folks that when Jesus returns to the Earth someday to rule and reign from Jerusalem that a lot of people won't believe it thinking that it was just AI.

There was a time when if you weren't excited about the presidential candidates you at least had members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to rely on.

Now days we have off the wall crazies in Congress who make even the presidential candidates appear comparatively normal.

Hard to believe in balance of power when those in power are unbalanced.

Worse of all, is the thought we may be getting what we deserve. In other words, we are the unbalanced bunch of crackpots. The Cooler being the exception, of course :).

.... The democrats running this country have become as bad as Putin and his thugs running Russia. I am sick of it.

Since Trump loves him some Putin and MAGA loves Trump, then shouldn't MAGA love that dems are as bad/good as Putin?

There is also a lot of prejudice against Muslims and the Palestinians. We as a nation can not be one-sided. The people of Gaza have been hungry for justice for years. Most of the adults have been killed leaving mostly women and children. They can only live in the areas the Jews tell them. They have no jobs, poor education, and nowhere to go. They have no one fighting for them. They have no water which is very important. They have a lot of NO'S not enough yesses.

The Supreme Court makes it even worse.

The Supreme Court makes it even worse.

Polls show trust in the Supremes has been declining.

Heck, even faith in the military is on the decline. Toss in fewer folks going to church and it appears we are losing faith in all ll our institutions.

Local schools and higher education are really taking political hits these days.

CoH and I have all but given up on the White Sox.

Is there anything left except extreme left and right ?

Almost envy the MAGAites who have Trump to rally around.

go to college? Have the democrats and their Gen Z thugs at eastern colleges determined the answer?
Hopefully Biden will come out with a plan so we can pay for the students protesting... It's only fair that we, the taxpayers, pay for their protests.

Trump doesn't love Putin.
If that were so, the cIA and DoD(NATO), USAID, Brown&Root, EcoHealth, and other 'vendors' would not have had free rein to colonize/co-opt Ukraine during his Administration.
Trump was conned into Pompeo, Barr, Pence and other neocons who drove the 'evil Russia' narrative in concert with State and the Eternal War Jingoists.
The Ukrainian military continually shelled civilians in Donetsk throughout 2014-2023.

Hopefully Biden will come out with a plan so we can pay for the students protesting... It's only fair that we, the taxpayers, pay for their protests.

Maybe if Trump wins, the tax break for the wealthy can help them send some more yacht trips and newer RVs to Thomas.

So under definition does this preclude any criticism against Jewish people?
"Jewish people" qua their jewishness? Or just a criticism of the Jewish person without regard to his religion/ethnicity? If you assert a general (bad) personality trait or vice to all Jewish people, then I think you count as an anti-semite.

Re the issue of the day, I've seen reports now that some of these groups are chanting directly at Jewish people and blocking them from class. That is hostility towards Jews and should not be tolerated. I really don't think it much matters what word you use to describe it, although I'd readily admit that the ADL and associted groups usually have a much broader definition of the term anti-semitism than I am comfortable with.

By the way, you can count me as an phobe of fundamentalist Islam. It's a noxious belief set.

Is Biden claiming the Hamas supporters (there's only a handful -- there's a difference between supporting Hamas and supporting the Palestinian cause) are fine people?
Trump didn't say Nazis were fine people. You just made the very distinction stoll and others have used to defend Trump because he referenced the people who were there to protect their southern heritage in the statutes, not the KKK or Nazis.

Well the tropes and stereotype MGT shit isn't cool at all and definitely a no no. If I criticize the Jewish Religion that would count as well would it not? So an atheist who might say something like "that God as the burning bush is all nonsense", would that not count as being anti-semitic to many?

Glad to see you are counted amongst us infidels.

it was the white supremacists group vs people protesting against them.

those were the sides.

The "very fine people" he was referring to were people he thought might be in that crowd that were there to protest the Robert E. Lee statues coming down. I think he mixed up "crowd" and "sides" for the removal of those statues (I think this because I'm not sure anyone knows if the groups responsible for the legal challenge to the statues' removal actually attended any of these protests or rallies).

If you actually read the transcript, Trump denounces the violence, denounces the neo-Nazis (more than once) and makes reference to the people who might just not want their historic statue to come down as the other group of people he doesn't think should be lumped in with the Nazis.

Stoll's analogy to the parsing of pro-Hamas and pro-Palestinian might not be directly on point, but it's close.

I don't think so, re your question, although one might inquire if you were an atheist and only questioned Judaism (which is what you're questioning, not Jewish people) and didn't question Christianity, Islam, or Pastafarianism.

If statues come down via the democratic process, I don't have a problem with it for the Confederates. In my mind, they were traitors. But I don't think people who want to keep up historical statues of Confederates are necessarily White Supremacists. Neither did Trump and he delineates between them and the Nazis and White Supremacists in his remarks.

REPORTER: The neo-Nazis started this thing. They showed up in Charlottesville.
TRUMP: Excuse me, they didn’t put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me. I saw the same pictures as you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down, of to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.
REPORTER: George Washington and Robert E. Lee are not the same.
TRUMP: Oh no, George Washington was a slave owner. Was George Washington a slave owner? So will George Washington now lose his status? Are we going to take down – excuse me. Are we going to take down, are we going to take down statues to George Washington? How about Thomas Jefferson? What do you think of Thomas Jefferson? You like him? Okay, good. Are we going to take down his statue? He was a major slave owner. Are we going to take down his statue? You know what? It’s fine, you’re changing history, you’re changing culture, and you had people – and I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally – but you had many people in that group other than neo-Nazis and white nationalists, okay? And the press has treated them absolutely unfairly. Now, in the other group also, you had some fine people, but you also had troublemakers and you see them come with the black outfits and with the helmets and with the baseball bats – you had a lot of bad people in the other group too.
REPORTER: I just didn’t understand what you were saying. You were saying the press has treated white nationalists unfairly?
TRUMP: No, no. There were people in that rally, and I looked the night before. If you look, they were people protesting very quietly, the taking down the statue of Robert E. Lee. I’m sure in that group there were some bad ones. The following day, it looked like they had some rough, bad people, neo-Nazis, white nationalists, whatever you want to call ‘em. But you had a lot of people in that group that were there to innocently protest and very legally protest, because you know, I don’t know if you know, but they had a permit. The other group didn’t have a permit. So I only tell you this: there are two sides to a story. I thought what took place was a horrible moment for our country, a horrible moment. But there are two sides to the country. Does anybody have a final – does anybody have a final question? You have an infrastructure question.

That may be the case. But if the large majority of faculty are liberal, and depending on the source that ratio is somewhere between 6-8:1 liberal to conservative in the US academy (it's closer to 20:1 in Europe), is that actually good for having rigorous academic & intellectual debate?
