Would you endorse a rule that says no contact (blocking or tackling) below the waist . . .

. . . as a means to reduce injuries to football players? I mention this because the SEC commissioner, Greg Sankey, said something similar on Atlanta Sports Radio today during the SEC Media Days, and I'm interested in what BiG fans think of the idea.

Yes.

No.

BTW, one of the hosts of the radio program was trying to position Mike Penix as a third best Heisman candidate after Bryce Young and CJ Stroud, and got no takers. He's a University of Washington alum.

I have to say no... Taking a guy down at full speed with only bulldogging technique would be tough to do consistently, plus, there'd be a penalty a minute with guys accidentally going low after contact...

I like the concept in terms of attempting to make the game safer but doubt this ones actually workable...

My fix, which few would like, would be to make all Kickoffs and Punts fair catches for the first three quarters with no legal contact by anyone... I'd revert to live, full contact, fully returnable Kickoffs and Punts for the 4th quarter Only when the score was within 27 points of the respective opponents score...
This would cut out a large number of injuries (in my opinion [don't have any data at this time, feel free to add it if found]...).

No blocking below the waist, sure.

Tackling, I don't think so. For smaller DB's and even linebackers, that's often a players only defense against big RB's and TE's, even some receivers these days. It'd also open up more head to head contact if you forced back end tacklers to stay high on tackles.

As of April, the NCAA ruled that blocking below the waist will be prohibited on plays outside the tackle box.

Blocking below the waist will only be allowed by linemen and stationary backs inside the tackle box.

Goes into effect with this 2022 season.

Hard no.

Quite frankly, there are only so many safety rules they can make before they fundamentally change the game.

On a practical note, I'd imagine there are a lot more non-contact leg injuries than leg injuries caused by leg tackles.

Cut blocks are a different animal. Although when done properly at the LOS, cut blocks are pretty innocuous. They're only really dangerous when they're done with intent to hurt someone or with a careless disregard whether you hurt someone.

Absolutely not.
if it does come into effect, take your biggest linemen and give them the football and see if a 180 lb DB can bring him down from the waist up? That should be fun.

That reminds me of pre-jr. high little league football at Municipal Gardens... there was a weight limit... If you were over a certain weight you had to play on the line and couldn't carry the ball.... We had a couple of guys on my 6 grade team who looked old enough to be served at the "Soc-It-Tu-Mi Lounge"...

Sounds like my roommate at military school. He had a full beard, full chest of hair and could get served in any bar in the area . . . at 16. 6', 190 lbs. Balding. We called him The Capper.

He'd been arrested a few times for drug charges, and had a choice between juvie and military school. Ran a purple microdot syndicate out of the dorm room . . . .

So let me understand this, any contact above the shoulder pads is already totally prohibited and now any contact below the waist will now be prohibited. Ya, that sounds like FOOTBALL to enjoy playing and watching. Better order more cheerleader uniforms, they're going to be in high demand on the field.

I think only Blocking below the waist is now prohibited, tackling is still legal... But then again..., I haven't checked the rules updates lately...

I think they'll have a tough row to hoe getting tackling below the waist thrown out...

In most cases, such a rule would be unnecessary because at most major programs today waist level tackling is taught anyway...

The below the waist stuff is mainly a just reacting to the situation type of technique where you may have to go under a block or take down a monster twice your size these days...

My personal favorite technique as an extremely mediocre H.S. player (Monster [SS], occasional FS + RB/WR) was to drop my shoulder at the last second and take their legs out but there was no margin for error and you could end up looking pretty silly if you missed... or... made the other guy look all-world if he simply jumped over you... (not that that Ever happened to Me...😉🙈).

Monster position on D. I haven't heard that but a handful of times in decades. You wouldn't be from Lebanon would you?

No, you already have rules in place about true crack back, blind side, and double team blocks. Those are the situations that need to be protected. If You haven't played You don't understand this. Suppose You are playing tight end and you are running a sweep to your side with the DE end playing outside You and your job is to hook the End and turn Him inside. Your initial contact may be above the waist, but depending upon the hand fighting, by the time the play gets to the outside, You ,may be blocking below the waist. Nobody is injured by the block because the Defender knows where the block came from.

We already have enough delays in playing time for reviews of targeting calls. I don't want to see 5 Hour Games because an Official needs a review every two downs to look at that type of penalty.

No..., it wasn't me... I was 70 miles away from there... My playing days were long, long ago and I wasn't a household name...(still can't quite understand that 😉🤣)... In fact, it wouldn't have surprised me to learn that the only ones in the community who knew my name (as a player) were my parents and my girlfriend (and I'm pretty sure they kept the information to themselves to avoid any undue embarrassment 😉).

I had all the measurables that every college Recruiting Co-Ord. made a specific point of avoiding like the plague...: Slow, Weak, and Underweight..., combined with a just average work ethic...
I still can't understand how they all missed on me... 🤣

About the only thing I gained from playing was a severely sprained knee (that whatever is left grinding around in there causes it to swell up when I move around for any amount of time running on hard surfaces), a healed hairline fracture at the top of my hip that could only have come from HS football (that I wasn't aware of at the time 🤣), a neck that sounds like I have layers of gravel between my upper vertebra when I move it around, along with a lifelong love of the game that I really wasn't very good at..., but never really got over 😎...

That's a great way to reduce leg injuries and increase almost every other kind of injury.

My first high school girlfriend lived north of 22nd St. on N. Moreland.
I went to school 90 till 3rd Grade
Then to PS 100, just south of 30th and Lafayette Road....played LL baseball behind St. Michaels...before Ritter HS was built..

Okay, then we have to be pretty close in age.
But, I don't remember LL baseball being played behind St. Michael's. The only LL baseball I remember in the area was Eagledale LL behind the Eagledale Plaza Shopping Center.... or softball at Municipal Gardens,
Did you go to Northwest, Ritter or Cathedral?... I'm an NHS grad... grew up less than 200 yards from the IMS's North 40 entrance gate.... but I knew, still know, a ton of people from the Rainbow Station/Lafayette Rd/Coffin Park neighborhood who attended Ritter or Cathedral.

I played Pony League ball at Eagledale.
I have a photo of a field trip by train to see the Reds published in the News when in LL.
NHS '65. Space Pioneers.

Famous local 'Basketball Jones' Steve Woolsey' was in my class.

My first wife grew up on Dunk Drive..

That happened during the famous Georgia Tech 222-0 win over Cumberland. At one point Tech gave the ball to its biggest linemen and the others didn't block for him. With that handicap he only gained seven yards.
