would most of you be disappointed

Compare coach A & B. Which would you rather have?

Coach A:
  • 68% winning percentage
  • 66% conference winning percentage
  • Went to tournament 75% of seasons coached
  • 3 conference championships in the last 11 years
  • 1 Final 4 appearance
Coach B:
  • 70% winning percentage
  • 57% conference winning percentage
  • Went to NCAA tournament 66% of seasons coached
  • 2 conference championships in the last 11 years
  • 2 Final 4 appearances.
Looks like a 'pick em'?

Yes, I'll take one of them.

He screwed Alford to get the Bruins job although I don’t have any details how he did it. No for me on Cronin.

Nevada is having such a bad season no one has suggested Alford

Cronin learned from some solid coaches with Pitino and Huggins. Not sure why he would leave UCLA though for another B1G program. They only possible draw would be location for family. This seems unlikely at best.

no stellar results? wins wherever he goes. you think it's easy to win at Cincinnati?
Not even looking it up, but when I think of Cincy, I think of Huggins who did well there, and my assumption is better than Cronin, although likely in difference conferences.

I thought about it overnight and you know what would really bother me about you mentioning Cronin like maybe you've heard that name emerging through the grapevine? It's that it's February and if we're already locked in on Mick Cronin we got infatuated with a name early again and didn't conduct a thorough search. Same thing we did with Sampson and Archie. If you're telling me they've already talked to Beard, Pearl, Stevens, Wade, McCollum, etc... and they settled on Cronin, I would accept that and could probably get excited about him. But if you're telling me that's who the powers that be, want in Frebruary without looking in to those other guys, I'd say they didn't do their job very well.

PS, the Field of 68 After Dark video I listened to about possibilities mentioned Cronin. But a guy had to bring him up towards the end and the way he said it made me think he'd heard there was interest from somewhere.

Well I wouldn’t read that deeply into a mere suggestion on a message board. Last time they did their due diligence and unfortunately plan A and B fell through. And truth be told is that plan C, even with the obvious ties, came with a glowing recommendation from plan A. I can’t imagine that Scott is not going to be thorough in this because, as a fellow IU basketball diehard, he knows the stakes of this decision.

If that’s the case then your frustration would be very valid, but I just think right now anything on the grapevine is just names floating in the ether to hopefully develop plenty of back channels.

I told you about before anyone, I know things

that's sort of what I guessed at. And, if they are already zeroing in on Cronin, when there's no need to do so this early, then I'm disappointed.

If they work their way through a list of possibilities and decide Cronin is the best match, I'd support that.

His buyout is a two way. 18 million. No way you pay 18 million for him and he’s definitely not paying that to come to Indiana. Better research in the future Kurt.

Dolson has been working on it for over a year, dusty would have been the choice if woodson would have stepped aside last year

with Mick Cronin? don't even see him on a lot of the list
When Cronin was at Cincy, He never seemed to recruit or develop good Offenses and Offensive Players. If You want a good Defensive Team, and are content to win a bunch of grind out games 60-55, maybe He is Your guy, But in this day and age of recruiting and Portal, You need to have an Identity Players can relate to and be happy playing within. You don't have to be Loyola Marymount and fire up 50 3 pointers and run up 130 points, and You don't have to be Princeton drain the Shot clock and back cut Offense. But You have to have something that is interesting for the Players and fun to play in.

Yeah, while I’m not enamored with Cronin as a coaching candidate , I also struggle to differentiate anything about his track record that Beard differentiates himself. Plus, as you point out his recruiting would be strengthened by coaching the region extensively at Murray and then Cinci. Add in success on the west coast coupled with huge NIL and the opportunity for recruits to play close to home once or twice a year and there is something compelling about it. Not my number one, but he is far higher on my list than what he was when his name was floated.
