Woodson retiring today rumor

I was just reading the transcript of his post-game interview after the Wisconsin debacle. He pretty much admits we aren't good, and he has no answers. He sees how this is going to end.

Who comes in as interim coach? Cheaney? Anyone but Rosemond or Hunter
Assuming that he's announcing immediate retirement, not at the end of the season (which is what I would expect) -- of those three I'd say Cheaney if he wants it.

Can't really bring in someone from outside for what, 5-6 weeks and expect they'd do anything. The season is over, just bring the ship back in to port.

Cheaney is risky... I don't think this roster is as good or as talented as many on here do, but they do have some potential. The problem...maybe a good thing...we only have 8 games left, and what they need to be successful, at this point, likely would take multiple weeks to "fix" or implement. By then, seasons over.

So...maybe Cheaney would be the guy that would give the program the most "juice". But man, if he'd Diebler the end of the season, and do something crazy like win 6 or 7 games out of the 8 remaining, and/or win the B10 tournament... I hope, hope, hope...that Dolson has the stones to not cave under the immense pressure there would be to hire him permanently.

Agree -- just be very very clear at the outset that the interim coach (whoever it is) is an INTERIM coach, and a full and proper search will be conducted.

None of Woodson's assistants are very good coaches. They will all to the exact same thing he did and play two bigs. This team is far too flawed to go on any kind of a run.

My EVV connection just pinged me. Rumor: Announcement before Michigan game. Retire now or at year end, not sure. That's what I got today. Take with grain of salt but confirms noise is real. Go Hoosiers!

I think you just do a rotation. Let each one coach a game or 2. That way, no chance of Mike Davis situation.

Not that I know the guy at all but I don't get the impression that Cheaney aspires to a coaching career. He's had a couple of assistant coaching gigs with other IU alums and is now at IU not even rostered as a coach but as a director of player development. If he did agree to step in as interim I don't think he would want the job permanently, nor does he have the qualifications to do it under any objective criteria.

Yeah I sort of agree. Great talent but not a good mix of what's needed. Still an average coach would have this team going to the tournament easily.

If Woodson does get fired then whoever the interim coach is has ZERO chance of being the next coach. This doesn't have to be stated and/or clarified at all. It wouldn't matter if whoever it is pulled a Steve Fischer. There's zero chance of the interim being retained on a permanent basis. After all the crap we've gone through there's zero chance of that happening.

EDIT: Also, I want to be the coach.

Me too! But if I won a Natty, and they didn't retain me, I'd be on here posting like crazy about it.

Well don't worry because even if Stevens himself is the interim coach, this group of players is not sniffing a Final Four. Just not the right combination of talent and work ethic.
