For a "coach who didn't have college experience" as the idiots would say, he did an absolutely remarkable job. As much as I love every player who wears the Candy Stripes, we didn't have near the physical talent we needed to compete.
The man can coach.

Remarkable is a bit of a stretch. Coming back and beating Michigan and then holding off Illinois changed the perspective of the season for some. He has a ways to go in terms of adjusting to the college game. I agree, the talent needs to be upgraded. I don't appreciate the current landscape of college basketball becoming an open market at seasons end, but I suppose it benefits IU or any other program in need of a talent upgrade. He needs a lot of momentum by end of year 3 to make his tenure worthwhile.

Everyone realizes that. If TJD leaves, the amount of talent that needs to be acquired through the transfer portal just to make the tourney again is significant. Hopefully it can be done.

I think it benefits bigger programs. And kind of like NBA free agency. Could be right up Woody’s alley lol.

Remarkable? Dude he had TJD. Remarkable would be like 26 wins and a sweet sixeteen.

What is remarkable is how bad the athletic talent is. Watch Matthew Lee at St Peters. He started out as a walk-on from Ohio. Indiana's biggest recruiting disaster has been recruiting Indiana because it is Indiana.

You are correct...............unfortunately

The portal can be good or bad to teams. I would argue the portal was not good to us this year. Kopp and Stewart were very frustrating. I don't care what shooting percentage Stewart had. I think it was around 40%. What was his percentage in losses? Kopp was supposed to be the scorer we needed. Where was he? Next year's team will have to find guys in the portal. It is up to Woodson to get those players who can really play.

Yes, remarkable is very close to what I observed in his 1st season. Agree whole heartedly the collegiate portal is the equivalent to NBA free agency. Coach Woodson should feel very comfortable using it as a tool to upgrade, fill in spaces and add scoring depth. As poorly as MK ended up shooting 3 % I doubt any of us would not have taken him from the portal. From my seat I like the view.

I wouldn’t say remarkable but his first year was impressive, given that his starting wings got outplayed in most games. If you look at some of IU’s toughest losses and near losses, they were against teams that had dynamic wing players like Johnny Davis, Malaki Branham, Ron Harper, Jr., and Julian Champagnie that IU couldn’t contain in the closing minutes. Getting 20 wins from this roster was a step in the right direction.

I’ve always said unless the program is a disaster that a coach should get 4 years to implement his system. With the transfer portal, I now say 3 years. IU took positive steps forward this season. Looking forward to next season.

Oh I totally agree. I don’t think it’s good to rely on portal players to build your roster, and I don’t think Woody will be doing that. But watching the tournament you realize how many of these teams have key transfers on their rosters. It was a mixed bag for us this year. Like you mentioned Kopp and Stewart, but at the same time we definitely don’t make the tourney without X either.

Your standards must be pretty low. There was always enought talent on this team to make the ncaa. Many of us expected it. Objective met but it was not some sort of Hoosiers story but maybe to you it is

X at.the.beginning not so much. But x as he improved became very valuable.

And zero outside shooting.
As for TJD, he still can't go right nor shoot from more than a few feet from the basket.
Yes, remarkable
I would be interested in thoughts on TJD’s right hand and mid range shots. Does it take more than one off season? Did he not work hard enough? Just not enough ability?

Create whatever criteria fits in your head. Make yourself feel big and bitch all your little heart desires. I'll not hinder your misery.

I honestly don't know, but would expect he didn't work hard enough.
He is definitely blessed athletically, but continued to only play to his strengths.
No amount of coaching can take you to the elite level. In the end, he personally has to have the desire, work ethic, and willingness to put in the reps.
The most brilliant thing RMK ever said......."the mental is to the physical as four is to one". It takes mental toughness to do the hard stuff which is to work on what are your weaknesses.

Wrong. There were no consistent shooters on the team.
They may have been good enough for you, but not for a program that wants to be "elite" again.

Who coming in is the consistent shooter? Gonna be the same next year?

At least. If you are trying to build the traditional way it takes a couple recruiting cycles even to get your own kids onboard -D1 recruiting doesn’t begin when these kids are seniors, it’s years before that now. Then you’ve got to have a yr or two to develop the underclassmen. Few FF teams are built on freshmen talent.

The portal of course will potentially shorten that cycle but it still will take a few years to really see how things play out.

And potentially even allow you to do it right away, if things go right. Iowa St. literally did a 180 from last year.

Assuming Race and Trayce stay, those two along with Geronimo, Bates and X are a very solid group. Time will tell on the incoming freshman and we also have Galloway. What we need is at least one add who can create and hit shots consistently.

We’ve never seen these vague blindly praise the coach posts over the last 20 years.

It was. It fell off the last few games, others here have attributed that in part to a knee injury. But a 40% average is not a guarantee that he'll shoot that every game. That's not how averages work.
