Winning streak starts TONIGHT

I don't think winning this game will be a problem. The problem with this team is them thinking that beating Maryland at home means they're good. They therefore will not have that "edge" to start at Minny and they'll struggle to win that one. I would love to see this team for once just get out of their own way and go to work.

As the with the last game, I don't see it.
This team lacks talent but IMO, the biggest thing it lacks is tenacity and mental toughness.
Bad guys by 6.
We don’t suddenly become less talented after halftime.

Yes, tenacity, mental toughness and basketball IQ.

we can probably blow a team like MD out despite the between the ears improvements that are needed, but as a program we need to learn how to close some games out and string some Ws together. Or, we need to UNlearn the ability to give games away and go on a losing streak. Seems to be second nature at this point, unfortunately.

I saw a stat last night as Wisconsin put Minnesota away on the last couple of possessions. Wisconsin in 12-1 is games decided by 6 points or less which leads the nation. Winning teams just find a way to win.

Wisconsin and Providence are both near the top at doing this, and are rated high in “luck”. They each have a playmaker that can help them close things out, Davis and Al. They are different players, as you well know. Davis can get his own shot, is just so talented. He can also close out at the line, as we have seen.

Al has been doing what he tried to do for us. Take games over by driving in and drawing contact or getting the bucket. In the B10, this often meant him lying on the ground surrounded by all the bigs, and not being able to finish. Sometimes he got the contact , sometimes not. He had legs as skinny as I have seen, he wasn’t strong, couldn’t finish through contact, but he gave it his all. He tried to will us to Ws.

we need better leadership and a closer. Someone that wants to take over a game late, and can close things out at the line if fouled.

That is also not sustainable. Much like football, winning close games is about a 50/50 proposition. Even greats like Manning and Brady only win 60% or so of close games.

Would help Al if B1G refs would ever call fouls, fouls. Instead they let us beat the sh!t out of each other and then call random fouls for little to no contact 40 feet from the basket as a "make up call".

Totally agree. As RMK was fond of saying the mental is to the physical as four is to one.

Is the mental part of the game (toughness and leadership as you mentioned below) part of the "talent" of a player? Either way, it should be a high priority to CMW going forward!

I think you are more describing many who post here, not the team. The mood on this board is bipolar and triggered by whether we won or lost the last game.

But if the last month has not disabused this team of any notion that they can win without playing their best game for a full 40 minutes, then I'm not sure what will.

It also helps having a player like Davis. That said, law of averages tend to catch up. My guess is they lose a game in NCAA and it’s less than 6 points. They are a good scrappy bunch, but they aren’t scaring anyone. **ck Wiscy!

statistically speaking, you are correct. BUT....Bucky basketball has proven to be 'sustainable' if nothing else. For yrs I've heard/read that THIS is the season they fall to the bottom tier. I stopped listening to those claims. Their boring brand of ball yields B1G success year after year.

Not saying it is but for this year it so far has been for them in 13 games . The last two possessions last night it was like they knew they were going to win. Just run perfectly and the one with like a second left on the clock. Every year we hear about how this is the year Wisconsin will not be good and it ends up being wrong every time.

Not saying they will do anything in the tourney but most of us would be happy as can be if we had their type of success in conference year in and out. And they did make the title game one year so its not like they are always out in the first game.
