I was hoping for an elite hire as well. But by all accounts DD is n X & O guy who works hard, so that will be a refreshing change. And I highly doubt he’s hanging out with his crew enjoying wine and cigars after a home blowout. I’ll trust SD on this , but if this another 4 year rebuild , I’ll officially retire as a fan.

I think we will know pretty quick given he will have 7 million in nil to start with. Probably why he did not hire mccollum he wanted a guy who get portal guys from day one. We shall see we have been burned so many times DD will have to prove it and fast.

For me he will be a success until he proves otherwise. My view is that a large NIL can be a two edged sword without the wisdom to use it well. If you go with high dollar high PR players that don’t fit your system then just as bad an outcome (actually worse) then having a low NIL cap. In IU’s case this is even more a concern because you usually have a fan base clamoring for high dollar high PR players convinced that large NIL solves all problems. I hope he has enough toughness to not suffer from kid in a candy store syndrome because that is the type of pressure he will receive from fans.

It's funny Iowa wanted him bad we feel like we settled and now McCollum might go to Iowa. If McCollum is more successful then DeVries this board will explode.

I agree but Dolson went with the guy who had shown he can recruit. And even in McCollum can recruit, Iowa isn’t Indiana for hs talent. I like our chances.

My fear is McCollum now goes to Iowa and produces Bo Ryan results... But DeVries should also be good. We shall see.
I think McCollum is the better coach just needed more experience I think if I was Dolson I would of took McCollum if I was going to take this risk. In his first year his team has top 50 offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency. I hope DeVries is successful but I think Iowa might got the better of the two.

If we were dealing with Xs and Os specifically, McCollum is the guy. But thats not how it works anymore...and I think many fans haven't come to terms with today's game. Alford spoke about it. It has driven some coaches out of the game entirely. This is a whole new ballgame with NIL and the portal. Choosing a coach is now a whole new ballgame too because of it. Who can use the NIL resources and be most productive with them? Who can evaluate the portal within our own system's needs? Who can recruit and land high end high school talent? Xs and Os? Yeah, that too.

McCollum finished the year 73rd in offensive efficiency and 44th in defensive efficiency. Woody finished 75th and 39th. DeVries finished 105th and 7th. McCollum brought 4 guys with him to Drake, while DeVries only brought his son to WVU.

DeVries is hard to figure out. Historically, his efficiency numbers lack consistency, which is definitely a red flag. I think DeVries offensive efficiency numbers are lower because his team doesn't prioritize crashing the offensive glass, instead focusing on getting set on defense (fewer second chance points, lower PPP). Perhaps his numbers are so erratic because of changes in playing style based on his roster.

I passed through Rupp Rafters last night & their initial reaction to our hire was to poach WV players. They also said we could be dangerous with the $7M nil plus revenue sharing support. Surprisingly their thoughts were a lot like some of ours -- not getting the flashy home run hire, but someone with longer term potential (like UK did w Pope) could work out.

My guess is McCollum ends up staying with Drake for a while. With his record he certainly could have found a mid-major D1 school long ago but he stayed in D2 for years. He doesn't have a history of climbing the ladder as fast as possible.

He just did not have the experience especially with recruiting at this level. The only thing I know is Devries will get four years because everyone get four years at IU no matter what.
