Will IU admin continue to punish the basketball program?

@#$% Sampson.

He destroyed the program, not some mythical holy attitude by admins.

@#$% him and the horse he rode in on. Kitchel was right, at the time
,
We sure showed him. Too bad nobody else got the memo.

2x AP Coach of the Year (1995, 2024)
Ben Jobe Award (2022)
2× Henry Iba Award (1995, 2024)
2x NABC Coach of the Year (2002, 2024)
Sporting News Coach of the Year (2025)
2x Big 12 Coach of the Year (2024, 2025)
4× AAC Coach of the Year (2018, 2019, 2022, 2023)
Big Eight Coach of the Year (1995)
Pac-10 Coach of the Year (1991)
2× Frontier Coach of the Year (1983, 1985)

Won his conference season the last two years straight and won his confernce tournament yesterday.

Future Hall of Famer too.

Pitino was probably only availaiy they were going after him coming off Sampson. Pearl, probably. But he was already into shit by summer of 2008 that would cost him his job later.

So no, don't think your list touches on reality of time and place.
We'll have to agree to disagree. I think the pride of "IU is too good of a school for that guy" has been around for a long time now. I don't want a slimy guy coaching IU but a past mistake doesn't always mean a guy can't represent the program the right way.

Again, Chris Beard would be a home run. He runs his programs the right way. He loves his players. The program would be infinitely better than it has been for 30 years.

IU always prefers to lose and morally posture than win. The school never took basketball seriously. Bob Knight was solely responsible for its success. Facilities were neglected and then only the bare minimum was done to upgrade them. Hiring Miller and especially Woodson were clear signs the administration doesn’t care about winning. The fans should be in revolt about this incompetence.
McCracken wouldn’t have won those championship’s without Bob Knight.

IU would never hire a coach on probation because of it’s moral posturing.

Dolson should be fired. Not only did he hire Woodson, but the king would have won here if he was given more money for NIL

Moral posturing is why Crean is still our coach, we should revolt.

Do you know why they didn’t do anything to the facilities? Because the person in charge of the program didn’t want to do anything to the facilities. He didn’t care about those things.
I’ve listened to Bob’s every word since he first walked on campus. He never stated publicly he didn’t want anything about the facility changed.

He did not want it to be a corporate advertisement. I’m sure he would have been for dogs chasing frisbees. Look how quickly the Hall changed after he was fired. Like the single class high school basketball tournament….the ones that didn’t experience have no clue how special it was

Doe Emeritus mean anything? I think any professor who retires gets that title.
It depends on the school. My wife has Emeritus status at the first college she worked for and you get some nice perks. She will always have an office there, open opportunities for consulting/speaking, and probably several other perks I haven't paid attention to. And no, not every retiree gets that status.

I think one of the few things IU has done "right" since RMK, is held on to the many traditions IU bball had built up through RMK's tenure.

Go to a Notre Dame bball game, or Louisville...with the music, lights, announcers, its more like an NBA game/concert than it is a traditional college basketball game.

One of the reasons announcers still, to this day, speak in glowing terms about Assembly Hall, and our fans, and the experience, is its largely the same as it was back when RMK coached.

Other than the candystipe warm-up suits, I can't think of too much tradition saved that is unique to IU. It is called Simon-Skjodt Assembly Hall so they did sell out on naming rights, which is better than Value City Arena, but not by much. I guess another Knight "tradition" is an unnamed student section...big deal! IU's problem may be that we're not as special as we like to think we are, resting on long past laurels as if Bloomington is still some mecca magnet for top players and coaches. It's a different college basketball environment now and IU continues it's adjustment to it in the wrong way with incompetent administrative leadership hiring incompetent coaches. It's looking more and more like this "tradition" will continue with our next hire.

Candy Stripes
Large student section
Mostly band for music (not as much obnoxious music)
Traditional announcer
William Tell Under 8 Timeout
Traditional Uniforms, other than a game or two a year
Traditional basketball court

The problem has been the specific coaching hires, and the lack of quality basketball on the court. Despite THOSE fumbles, they've helped keep the program relevant and alive otherwise.

Lets hope Dolson gets this one more right than the last series of IU bball coaching decisions have been.

I was not aware IU has a larger student section than other powerhouse schools.
I don't think "Disco Don" spinning platters above the end zone crowd was a Knight tradition.
IU's announcer post-Chuck Crabbe is more obnoxious, more NBA.
IU uniforms have always changed with the times. If not, they would still be wearing the nut-hugging
short-shorts of the 70's. You may recall their baggy phase ignited by the Fab Four.

So I give you candy stripes, William Tell Oveture under 8 Timeout and traditional basketball court for it's folding wooden bleachers reminiscent of high school gyms. Oh, and let's not forget grainy video of Mop Lady!
I think IU needs to hire a real life Mop Lady to come out of the tunnel sweeping while singing the fight song. She would make for a more raucous atmosphere, reminiscent of the voluminous stir Bob Knight always created when he walked out of the tunnel pregame with everyone standing in respect. That's another tradition gone today.

My point is they've kept enough of them. I suspect the grumpiness is more a result of the lackluster play on the court. I've been to dozens of games post RMK, and I still get goosebumps at some point, at every single one of them. But unfortunately, from too many of them, I've left the building frustrated and annoyed by the team on the court.

It’s different. Students used to be scattered about with an assigned seat. There were no corporate advertisements. The court is different. The obnoxious signs behind the goals. The season ticket structure.

Its still and Indiana basketball game... Go to an ND or Louisville game...IU is like an Indiana high school game compared to those types of environments.

Never took basketball seriously, you're joking.
Branch McCracken, 2 banners before RMK who was hired in 1971, the same year Assembly hall was dedicated. It was designed in the late 1960's.
Now the incompetence since the mid-1990's is a whole other story. RMK went off the deep end more than a couple of years before Myles Brand "executed" him.
