The admin's decision to punish IU basketball has been going on since they fired Coach Knight. He lost his job and part of his legacy. IU basketball has been non relevant nationally in every year since 2002 (Knight recruits). The admin got to tell everyone that they stood on the moral high ground and were too good for a coach like Bob Knight. It's IU, any coach can win at Indiana...

Admin chooses to continue with Mike Davis. It saved them from potentially losing half the team to transferring (and the 2002 tournament run) but it caused IU basketball to take steps backyards.

Admin chooses Kelvin Sampson to get them back. Then he tries to skirt rules. This caused the admin to self report and fire him. The basketball program then takes the punishment and the really good team that had w/ Eric Gordon and DJ White implodes. IU admin gets to tell everyone that they are the moral high ground school, unlike the other blue bloods.

Admin chooses the cleanest coach they can find...Tom Crean. After three years of misery, he is able to recruit Cody Zeller and other good role players. The program then finally gets great play from CZ, Yogi, Thomas Bryant, Watford, Hulls, Sheehey, Olidipo, and others. Then it becomes evident with the roller coaster results that Crean needs an extremely good roster in order to win. IU basketball becomes just another program.

Admin then chooses another "clean" coach in Archie Miller. He was the young Knight like and fiery defensive minded coach that IU needs in order to become nationally relevant again. He was unproven at the power conference level but he projected like someone that could do it. He recruits the state well and getting the state's best players give him some exciting rosters. Then it becomes clear to all the fans that he can't do much with the talent. He was in over his head. IU basketball becomes an average at best program. The respect of being a blue blood is gone.

Admin chooses one of Coach Knight's greatest and favorite players of all time, Mike Woodson. He knows and openly discusses how IU is a blue blood and possibly the best place to play in America. Fans and alumni love the swagger and how much he loves Coach Knight. He recruits at a high level and enjoys great years from TJD, KW, JHS, Gallo, and others. However, they can't get past the slightly above average level. MW has zero college experience and they can't level up even with good players. Some IU fans/alumni are now to the point of feeling that being in the last 4 in for the NCAA Tournament is actually a really good year.

IU Admin is now back to choosing another coach. Chris Beard, the closest thing to Coach Knight that you can find, appears to be open to coaching IU. His teams overachieve every year. He has just brought another school with zero legacy (minus TX) to national relevance and to their best seasons ever. Rick Pitino, perhaps the best mind in college basketball today, says CB would be the one and only guy to hire if he were the admin at IU. He does have a police report of an incident with an ex. Both she and CB have stated that CB was not the aggressor and it was self defense. All charges were dropped. Does IU admin continue to punish the basketball program and pass on the best available coach and the best chance to bring the basketball program back to national relevance? They can tell their fans/alumni that they are the moral high ground school who won't accept a person with any incidents in their past. They can hire a cleaner but lesser qualified coach. There is some pride in doing it that way and it would appease some fans/alumni to do that. However, they aren't hurting Chris Beard. He will win and be successful at any university that is lucking enough to have him. Then there is the other choice. If IU admin is done punishing the basketball program they hire CB and return it to being a fun to watch and national championship level program. Does the IU admin want to get IU back to being in a top 5-7 team each year again (Pitino's words)? IU admin has to decide again. Scott Dolson and Pamela Whitten and the rest of the decision making team, please choose what is best for the basketball program.

IU always prefers to lose and morally posture than win. The school never took basketball seriously. Bob Knight was solely responsible for its success. Facilities were neglected and then only the bare minimum was done to upgrade them. Hiring Miller and especially Woodson were clear signs the administration doesn’t care about winning. The fans should be in revolt about this incompetence.

You should ask to speak to the manager ...

We sure whine a lot about the admin. at least. (In basketball, with good reason IMO. Formerly with even more reason in football.)

But we haven't even seen who the hire is or what the plans are.

We'll see. Maybe it's changing with Pam Whitten's arrival. Doesn't hurt. Still have many of the same 'trust' as before but she seems to care that uiversity programs including sports are good.

Coach Knight could have set it up to be more strongly supported by the school. Using his huge influence. But he wanted to run the show or just didn't have the personality to get buyin from faculty and admin. I think he did have, if that was they way he wanted to go from early.

Totally agree Chris Beard should be IU’s next coach he is by far the best coach for the job the past is the past and he has been fine since Texas let him go. I want IU to be relevant again year in and year out and Beard is the coach to get the job done. Get it done Scott !!!!!!!!

Coach worked well with Bill Orwig and brought a lot of money into the athletic dept. The entire university over his time there. The Hall was opened his first year and the athletic dept didn't do anything until Sampson got them to agree to facility upgrades. That's over 30 years. I really wish he would've retired after Pat graduated and went into broadcasting. I'm not sure if he was chasing the record or not but we should be playing in RMK Assembly Hall right now.

Do you know why they didn’t do anything to the facilities? Because the person in charge of the program didn’t want to do anything to the facilities. He didn’t care about those things.

Have you not noticed the decline of IU basketball?
You’re like a broken record. Maybe a broken clock? I suppose you’re right once or twice a day but otherwise it’s just hot air and bloviating. For crying out loud you just wrote an epoch about the history of Indiana basketball in the last 25 years as if People here don’t already know all of those details.

You’re the broken record with all the anti-Beard stuff. I want IU basketball to level up. 25 years is too long.

I'm just not at apocalypse level. Dolson hasn't said a word about any candidate.
Forgive me if it felt apocalyptic. I’m still hopeful for a Beard, Stevens, or Wright level coach. If not, I’m over with 25 years of just flirting with being good occasionally.

You forgot to include the last 6-7 years of Knight, IU was irrelevant. Beard is not the answer. No one that understands to day's game want another Knight. Trying to tie into Knight is what has caused the hole they are in today.

Miller was the #1 hot coach the year IU got him. Woodson was hired because the big names turned us down ( still should have tried a mid major guy or something).

The admin cares. They aren’t intentionally trying to punish the basketball program.

I agree Beard would be successful here. But per these boards over the past couple months he has progressed the second coming of JC himself. Beard is not the only coach who could be successful here. B Stevens will do just fine 😉

Agreed. Incompetence and willful negligence are very different animals. In Scott we trust. He won’t fvck this up

The fact that Beard uses many of the Knight principles and concepts doesn’t mean that he’s not the right hire.

You’re right that the last 6-7 years weren’t up to par. He seemed to not get the recruits in those years. He finally started getting the recruits again at the end and was then fired. That 2002 team was loaded with his recruits.

The narrative that IU doesn’t want to win is just nonsense. It was nearly unanimous ( including Coach Knight) that Archie was a good hire. Didn’t turn out that way but it’s just silly to think that was incompetent. Same goes for those thinking it’s because they don’t want to win that Beard won’t be hired.

Beard is the type of guy you need.
A tough coach who demands excellence.

Here’s it in a nutshell:

Coach Cig. Spring football presser:

“We didn’t like the way we finished last year. Left a bad taste in our mouth. Didn’t like how we played up there.”

Coach Woodson:
“We’ve had a pretty good run. We did good things here. When we play good for 40 minutes, we’re capable of beating anybody.”

One is never satisfied. One thinks mediocre is acceptable and tries to justify it.

Beard is more like the former.

I knows it’s not intentional. However, the priority of being able to say they are the moral high ground school has cost the basketball program. I’m not saying cheating is good. Just that passing on guys like Pearl, Pitino, Calipari, and possibly Beard this year doesn’t make sense.

Super fair take.

But part of all this is a result of all those years with Knight, where we all took pride in the fact we weren’t Kentucky and had a coach who could be a jackass, but was clean and built the expectation of doing it the “right” way, no matter what.

I 100% agree. Knight did help build that, “we are better than those other cheating schools” stuff.

That’s the problem with playing the moral police. Others may have cheated but they probably didn’t do half of Knight’s negative things.

Hilariously stupid fan fiction. Delusion on a level of the 2020 election being stolen.
