I assume a good amount of you live(d) in indiana. Seems mathematically impossible.

And don't give me the "oh we're not that liberal, Trump is just a mad man" Seriously. What gives?

I don't think we are all that liberal. It is more a case of we are fairly highly educated. So when we someone unqualified for office, we tell it like it is.

Amazes me as a long time independent and fairly moderate person that I am consistently called liberal because I call Trump out for the nut case he is.

I've never voted for a Dem POTUS in my adult life. My first vote was for W in 2000. I voted for the GOP candidate in 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012.

I voted for Todd Young this year. I voted for Lugar any chance possible.

Regarding major elections.....

The only Republicans I've refused to support (that I could vote for):

Muordock
Pence
Trump/Pence

If that makes me a "liberal"...than so be it. You want these losers, have them. If labels matter to you, I'm sorry. You'll grow up and realize that these things don't matter.

This is actually a smart board with plenty of smart people. That's why there is little defense of Trump. There are plenty of conservatives on here.

Smart folks aren't getting behind this admim, as they recognize the serious nature of the problem.

That doesn't make you a "liberal". It makes you a rationale individual.

There you go liberal = highly educated and smart and convervative = uneducated and dumb. Got it.

Aside from the excellent responses below, most of which are from folks who are known conservatives and who have supported the GOP and opposed Democratic candidates for their entire history on the board (except for some, in 2016), what makes you presume that the board shouldn't be liberal? People are under no obligation to be like you.

This surprises me. But I have not been on this board very long.

For the record I didn't vote for Trump. Voted for Gary because when faced with the choice between evil/entitled and incompetent/narcissistic I don't see any problem in choosing slightly ignorant/crazy.

Most if not all of us graduated from IU Bloomington. If you haven't noticed, it's a pretty liberal campus.

That, and the board is actually split fairly evenly. It's just the more liberal thinking folks are more vocal now.

No surprise there.

And I still can't believe some folks are defending Trump on this board. ;). Conservative, liberal or something in between- the guy has been a big league disaster thus far.

Some of us graduated from the Kelley school, which is not liberal.

Your problem @IDontWannaLargeFarva is that you can't separate pre-Tea Party conservatism from what we have today. I, like @twenty02 used to always vote R. For me, that shipped sailed when Palin became the nominee for VP and the GOP ceased being the adult party.

I have hopes for guys like Paul Ryan, but they're cancelled out by idiots like Tom Cotton.

And no offense, but I doubt you can accurately describe "liberal". I'm guessing your definition includes socialism.

Freedom of thought and ideas is a basic tenant I think most real liberals would agree to. Which is about as detached from today's democratic party as Donald Trump is from conservatism.

I agree.

Today's definition of liberal is: anything that's not to the extreme right.

I
Very few liberals today are as far left as Nixon was. Or as far left as Teddy Roosevelt.
I try to be pragmatic. If today's top marginal tax rate were 70%(as in Nixon's day), I could probably be convinced that's a little high. Not that tax rates define where one falls on the political spectrum.

I'll be very clear....I trend toward libertarianism whenever possible.

But I'm also pragmatic, and as I've grown older I have understood that there are certain aspects of society that requires a governmental role.

For example, we generally accept that mutual defense is in the best interest of all of us. That's by its nature a socialsistic endeavour. The DOD bureaucracy is larger than the size of Walmart.

We've "socialized" a lot of our economy already.....long, long ago.

Instead of fixing what needs fixed, we are stuck in the ditch because of partisan bullshit.

I am not sure its liberal because it's Bloomington.

Diversity = debating & acceptance of multiple points views = tolerance = Bloomington or any place of diversity.

Then, education tends to train you to present a fact based case before offering your conclusion... rather than an emotionally based decision. This way you learn to defend your philosophy better rather than basic labels.
So defending 'tolerance' makes you a 'liberal', so be it.

I'll add....why I'm sure it burns the ass of my liberal friends here....

I believe Mitt Romney was the best POTUS candidate that our country had been offered since GHWB (and maybe beyond).

We missed out.

Compared with the current buffoon, even Bob Dole in his current state looks better. So its not saying much with Mr Central Casting Mitt. But I think Mitt can never be doubt for doing the right thing. His approaches may differ from mine but be is a good guy.

Perhaps, a better way of phrasing is "The educated people tend to be more liberal than the others."

2008 Mitt sucked. 2012 Mitt was great. If he just had 10% of Trump's IDGAF attitude when facing criticism I think Mitt would have won.

I was a much bigger fan of 2012 Mitt. But I still always knew who he was. He had a history, public service, documented.

Folks who voted Trunp...they were basically hiring the demo guy. The guy who will tear down your wall between your kitchen and living room....and then walk off the job.

Nixon was far left? That requires a definition of "far left."
Wage and price controls was a total takeover of the US economy. His 1974 plan for health care reform looked very much like Obama's. He created the EPA. He expanded the powers of the EEOC. He went to China (think Obama going to Cuba as a comparison). Nixon supported and signed a 40% raise in the minimum wage. He created the Alternative Minimum Tax. He was just considered conservative because the Democrats were further left. That is how far America has moved right.

I think you're making the pitfall assumption that young and dumb college kids represent the liberals as a whole. They do not.

I wouldn't want people judging others who think like me based on what I did in college. That'd be bad, mmmmkay.

Maybe so. Mitt lost me when he backtracked from all the good he has done in Massachusetts. Had it been in 2008 it might've been a different story.

Mitt was a victim of the Tea Party at the height of its rampage. He lost because he had to cater to those know-nothings. They still haven't gone away, they've just multiplied.

The GOP killed Romney by forcing him to run away from his signature contribution...Romneycare. Not only did Romney have business ability he also had the ability to work across the aisle. All those things are currently negatives among the base. Frankly, there is just very little room in the GOP for decent, let alone tremendously decent and competent people like Romney. Trump is the model.

Which vote you cast in what election is not the determining factor in the liberal conservative divide. The major factor(s) in the US divide are - what is the nature of mankind and what is the proper way to apply the Constitution. Those two issues divide us generally, if you could get accurate responses from folks. Unfortunately, some folks hold views but could never understand nor explain how those factors divide us not is it their reason. Some just follow the herd they have been attracted to without knowing where they fall on those critical, dividing points.

Good grief. This is what you think is reality? No wonder you come across as a monster.

This is the Crusader mentality. You think you have God on your side. I hope you do some serious introspection.

If that were true then African American evangelicals and White evangelicals would be on the same page politically. Their theology is identical when it comes to the nature of mankind. The nature of mankind question is irrelevant.

Where you hit the nail on the head is with your second point on the constitution. The division goes back to the founding. Liberals (prior to 1960s the GOP was the liberal party, afterwards the Democrats) believe in civil rights for all and equal protection for all. Conservatives don't.

We had a civil war on this ground. We passed the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution including the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Protection_Clause only by passing the reconstruction act to overcome the resistance of the southern states by, essentially, taking over their state governments. The court decisions that allowed Jim Crow laws and the resulting disenfranchisement of African Americans was a central part of this struggle that defined our politics through the 1960s. The fight over the courts today is largely about these issues still. The Robert's court jettisoning of voting rights oversight of southern states has led to a massive increase in suppression of voting rights for African Americans and Hispanics. The fight over the Supreme Court is critically about whether suppression of minority voting will be tolerated of not. The fight is the same as it ever was. On one side are those who support equal rights for all...on the other side are those who support rights but for only a smaller set.

So it is today as it ever was.

If Romney had joined the crowded field and campaigned in 2016 for the GOP nomination, Trump would have had him in tears before it was over.

There is a large segment of our body politic who wants a tough guy who will stand up against all they imagine is working against their best interests. Romney in the eyes of these people is part of what is wrong and is too proper and nice. Trump, on the other hand, represents someone willing to fight and change the establishment for the benefit of the little guy.

I don't buy into all this, but I do somewhat understand what is going on in the minds of people who are simply dissatisfied with Washington and the direction of where the country has been heading.

No, Obama and his media sycophants killed Romney. Romney did his share by listening to consultants which exposed his poor campaigning skills. but in the end Romney was trashed by a campaign showing him to be a heartless corporate rich guy who kept women in a notebook, gave up on 48% of the people who wouldn't vote for him, and even had an elevator for vehicles in his two-story garage. Obama is probably the best campaigner we had, better than WJC, and mobilizing and exciting people to vote. He was so good at it, that is how he governed. Everyone gripes about negative campaigning, but it works. In a sense Obama and Trump are two sides of the same coin, but Obama is much more elegant with his trash talking.

Oh and you can stop with your Romney would have been a good president baloney. I agree, he had demonstrated considerable skills and knowledge that placed him way ahead of his 2012 opponent, but you never believed that.
