Hopefully I'm dead wrong and this guy turns out to be wildly successful. If so I'll gladly eat crow. But there's no doubt In my mind that this was a desperation hire. Dolson was turned down by his first 7 or 8 choices at least.
Why not see how BM, GM, Beard, etc. do? The coaches with the better resumes. None of them are going to do anything until their seasons are over.

McCasland is very good and I like him a lot too. He’ll be very difficult to pry from TT as they have very good financial support. Who knows, maybe Dolson checked and he wasn’t interested?
I liked BM a lot as well and wanted him over DeVries. However, CDV is someone I can get behind and support. There’s a lot to like about CDV.

IU could have done worse. DD is lucky his son is such a good player.
I think he had to act fast or Iowa was going to hire him. No one knows if SD had anything rolling with other coaches in the tournament but he must not have locked onto someone. Then if you miss on DD, maybe he felt the drop off risk was too much.

I really don’t think waiting, or not waiting, had anything to do with this hire.
There is enough body of work to not concern yourself with the next 3 weeks. Plenty of coaches have been overrated or underrated based off 3 weeks from the masses. Devries has shown the ability to identify talent and has a system on each end that can be effective. He has been around good basketball minds as an assistant. He proved in the portal era he can flip a team quickly. Give the guy a chance.
Because he found the guy he feels is the right fit for IU. This is his hire and he will have to answer the food or bad that happens.
I’m sure if Dolson were interested in those guys, he already knew if they were gonna be interested at their seasons end.
Beard could win a national title and he still wasn’t coming to IU. Same with Wade.
We covered this before in other threads. A number of people claimed that if We backed up the Brinks Truck and sent it to Oxford, Mississippi, Beard would jump in the truck and head to Bloomington. 40 Years ago, even 25 years ago that probably would have worked, It's a different world today. In Basketball, it only takes a handful of players to turn a program around. With NIL and the Portal, You can win and be successful at just about any school with a little luck. You don't need Indiana University basketball to be a well paid successful Coach.
I doubt that devries got 8 portal players last year and may not want any of the current guys anyway.

Somebody said he met devries in the Bahamas and it's been his guy ever since. I'm guessing he thinks he is the next cig. Only time will tell. But we will know soon he will have massive nil.
IU name means a lot to you and me. To everyone else, IU hasn’t been shit for 30 years. The late 90s became “who’s beating us in the first round this year?”. We’ve won the B1G three times in the last 32 years and one of those was a three-way tie.
The premier programs of the last 25-30 years are UConn, Florida, Duke, UNC, Kansas and UK. Hard to think about but it’s true. Kids coming out of HS weren’t even alive the last time we went to a FF. Some were barely in elementary school the last time we won the conference. No one outside of this forum and the backroads of IN give a shit about RMK or what IU did in the 70s & 80s.
Yeah, we have a rich history. We have a huge, dedicated fan base. We have resources. Hopefully DD can get us playing well and use all that to bring us back. We’re a sleeping giant waiting to wake the f*** up.

We don't know Dolson's wish list. It could have been just DD and he didn't want to wait until closing time to finalize the deal. Or, he may have been politely told by many other candidates that they were not interested at all. I have to believe he was well into his process when they announced Woodson's retirement.
I was put off by the SI article below, thinking the writer was telling us (real and fake fans alike) to settle for mediocrity and forget the past. But that's not his point at all. He made a lot of valid observations and suggestions.

I really dont think he was turned down by 7 guys cause other than a phone call to stevens I dont think he went after any of them. He never went after beard or drew imo. Dolson imo thinks he can make another cig hire and why he picked a guy like this I doubt he ever went after any big names except stevens. Remember IU wont touch anyone with a past so that eliminates alot of guys. I guess he could of hired mccullum but he had no experience at this level. Might bite him in the ass one day but who knows.
No….a desperation hire is a guy that’s never coached in college before. The same guy that many on this very board tried to sell as a big positive back in 2021 because “he has NBA ties and kids want to play for because he knows what it takes to get to the NBA.”
They soon realized, despite what his NBA record told them all along, that the guy couldn’t coach.
Actually, the fact that this board hates the Devries hire is very encouraging because these were the same people saying last time we just had to get an Indiana guy because that’s the only kind of coach that understands IU basketball. Well…..Woody might have well as played at the University of Istanbul because he exhibited zero of the standards and values that made IU. successful….but all these posters said that hiring an IU guy was the secret recipe.
Supposedly Beard would crawl over broken glass to coach here. However, his baggage is way too hard to ignore for many. And if it is true for Wade as well, Sampon's cheating at OU then IU is making it hard for IU to try Wade.
