What players will stay?

Remember when Woody got the job and all entered portal except Gallo and Leal…don’t see anyone really tied to IU ( maybe Cupps?) so yeah, all will probably enter

Am I wrong to expect all scholarship players to enter the portal? What players do you think will stay?
I imagine they will all enter the portal. Think it depends who we hire who stays and goes. I’d just hope they would wait to see. If they enter the portal right after we are done, it will likely be several more weeks if we are hiring an active coach.

I think they will all enter, and we'll get back whoever we want to pay to keep. Given their many deficiencies, hard to say who we'd want. Reneau, Rice, and Mgbako, maybe?

Well, I take that back. Cupps and Newton might stay for fear that they can't get any other offers--but Cupps probably will, just probably from MAC schools. But he's a worker so I'd expect to see him succeed somewhere eventually. Poor Newton has more missed games than minutes played in college, I think.

No guarantee the new coach would want them. Do we still have the bill of rights?
I think we do. But the new coach could just pull a Gelon and kick them off the team and offer to pay for the rest of their schooling.

I'm not in favor of that, especially with rosters expanding next year, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Here's the roster:

Ballo, Galloway, Hatton, and Leal are all out of eligibility, as is James but I can't remember if he's on scholarship or not... So there's 4 certain scholarships available... Goode appears to be out of eligibility (he played in 10 games as a Sophomore) but I'm uncertain as to whether he got a waiver for that season or not...; so that's a probable 5th Sch. available...

I'm betting Newton takes a medical and finishs his degree here on scholarship but not as a member of the roster... So there's a possible 6th scholarship available...

If the two guys currently committed actually show up, that leaves us with probably 4 scholarships to use in the Portal (if everyone else was asked to stay and they chose to..., and Newton is taking a medical...).

I'm guessing we lose at least one more who does have eligibility to the Portal so that gives us up to 5 scholarships available to bring in high character, high basketball IQ guys, who can shoot "lights out" and love to play hard nosed Defense, as culture changers...; which should be enough if they truly have the right stuff...

It's going to be an interesting Spring for Indiana Basketball...

Too many variables at play to really predict how many, and then who, might stay.

New coaches style of play
Whether or not the new coach wants any of them
What would their NIL packages look like?

Assuming the last one stays somewhat similar to what they're getting today, I would think there will be a number of them that will want to come back. So it'd come down to whether or not the new coach wants them back or not.

Smart coach won’t want more than 1 or 2 back. This team has toxic pieces. I never want to see Malik play at IU again.

I don't know enough about him as a person to say that...

He clearly has skills that could be tweaked and polished and would seemingly be helpful IF he allowed himself to be actually Coached by the new guy... Now if he sees himself as above coaching and somehow irreplaceable then yah, adios...

He does have a Lot of work to do especially on the Defensive end of things...

They have scholarships so they have an education guarantee at a minimum.
As for NIL, that's a completely different issue. I imagine it's a contract and ruled by those terms.
Any lawyers out there who want to enlighten us?

The only one that I really care about staying is Tucker. He's going to be good with a staff that focuses on development. The rest can go if they want, but really it's just MR, Mac, and Rice with any game and eligibility.
I think it would be hilarious to see Carlyle become the player we were told he was under a different coach.

I think Carlyle absolutely could become that player, for a different coach. We saw flashes early in the season of what he could be as a defender. A competent coach gets him to play defense that way, all the time. And then offensively, he's bouncy, he's fast, if he were to buy in to being a guy that plays off the ball, and cuts hard, makes plays going to the rim, shoots MANY less tough shots off the dribble, he could be a pretty good supporting wing/guard.

Perhaps he looked good because of the lesser (non-BIG) competition.

Perhaps...but his defensive energy, early in the year, was night and day different than what we've seen out of him Late December-on.

He was the guy up turning ball handlers, cutting off driving lanes, clapping while doing so... For whatever reason, he lost that passion and focus defensively. My theory is if its in there at all, a good coach gets him to do it most of the time.

Do not disagree. I should have said any players that a coach would want would stay and Cash is King. Please share details around MR if you can. I began souring on him last year with the instant bitter beer face and arms up in the air each time he’s called for a foul. Such a waste of talent. Curious to hear what he is contributing to a toxic environment.

What players will stay? I gotta tell ya’, I don’t give a damn. In today’s game with NIL and transfer rules, rebuilding isn’t the years long task it used to be. The right coach and right staff could have a solid team in place from the get go, and have a very good team in the second year.

Bad bball IQ, bad court vision, not to mention a walking foul. Just don't like him as a player. No real inside info, just done with him ha.

What IU players enter the portal depends, in part, on what players the new coach brings with him as portal players. If he is a respected coach who works well with developing youth, he’ll have his top notch kids coming with him. Think Curt Cignetti here. If our current players feel threatened by the incoming transfer talent, so be it as a good thing.

I think anyone transferring takes a greater than 50% pay cut.

Rice, Tucker, and Mgbako might be closer to a 25% pay cut depending on how portal supply and demand works out in their favor for their demonstrated skill sets.

The most important thing right now is the NIL fundraising and the commitments of the big donors, who gave Woody this roster, putting together a warchest for a new coach.

I want anyone with a hand in the cookie jar that contributes to the inordinate number of injuries these past handful of seasons gone, gone, gone

But if they come back they should also get big pay cuts. We can do far better for what we overpaid all of these guys.

Yes, we have some good players, but nothing wrong with the new coach deciding to 'flip the roster' into his image of a team.

What's so maddening about this year's team is that they are so close to getting over the hump. Okay, groan 'cause I get it from Mike Woodson, but it's true. I still enjoy watching them play, maddening as they are, and am really looking forward to tonight's game. However, there is concern Ballo has "checked out" according to Jim Coyle with Monday's guest, Don Fischer. Ever since Ballo walked away from the handshake line he's played poorly, along with possibly his attitude. Is it a two game aberration? Perhaps something much sinister. Fisch told it like it is, this team is...I can't remember his exact words but something like totally discombobulated...a real mess in so many ways. Folks, something just ain't right here, type-of-thing it was. Again, It was a good show on YouTube. Don Fischer's words are like the word of God. He is to be commended for his dedication. I've been with him the whole way and he with me not knowing. There's hardly ever a dull moment, starting in 1971 and continuing to this day, later to be this night.

Following the undefeated '76 season, IU put out an LP Album of Don Fischer's radio highlights from that perfect season. It had bits and pieces from just about every game with emphasis on the tournament run. Enthusiasm rained supreme. That record would have been a great keepsake had I not lost it in a '97 apartment fire. I assume it melted. In it, Don Fischer was heard to comment, "When IU wins a national championship Indiana's "Hoosier Hysteria" becomes delirious, "Hoosier Euphoria". I thought that was a great description of feelings felt. "Spot on" as they like to say at the dry cleaners.
