Those also come in tandems? Who knew?
Hoot would ground him.
I can tell you one thing.... that is not the way you're supposed to dismount.
Yes. At the middle school they are a joke. You get 7 minutes. Here’s how EVERY SINGLE ONE goes:I know, that’s hard to believe though. It’s been a given and is something that important in elementary. Do you have parent teacher conferences?
Two drinks/afternoon....!In all seriousness hoot1, I would love for you to mix us up two drinks and sit and shoot the shit for an afternoon.
Yeah that sucks. I know middle school is harder because there are so many teachers to see.Yes. At the middle school they are a joke. You get 7 minutes. Here’s how EVERY SINGLE ONE goes:
Little Stevens is doing fine. As you can see he/she got an A on this test an A- on that one (repeating what you actually can see on the PowerSchool app). He/she is a joy to have in class. And there a really not much else to report. We have 2 minutes left. Any questions?
Yes. Is there something extra you can give him/her to challenge them? Anything extra I can have them do outside class for enrichment that you think would deepen their mastery or interest in [fill in the subject].
Blank stare. Pause. I’m not sure.I bet you could google that and find something. Ok well our time is up.

I was just pointing out teachers can include or omit information.Oh yes indeed. Pages 102-108 in math this week is definitely biased. If you don’t trust the teacher, homeschool your child. Feel free. But you want to trust the teacher with a gun. Ya’ll nuts.
No, but I was one for a long time. I have family and friends who are teachers and administrators and they answer my questions.Do you have kids?
What percentage of teachers do you think are out there trying to do their best and giving kids a good education?
No. What I would like parents to do is set time aside to study with their kids and encourage them to read.Would you like a parent to come in every week for the entire week and then produce them? Great idea.
That's in your elementary schools? That's crazy. SoCal kids learn that stuff way earlier. We have PowerSchool. Teachers never update it. I have no clue what they're teaching my kids unless I ask them and then I get the typical "I don't know. Stuff. It's boring." Or "nothing."
Until one day out of the blue, "Hey dad, I'm a girl now. Did you know the U.S. fought the Revolutionary War to enslave black people and install an oppressive capitalistic regime that has oppressed billions?"
Interesting. Los Angeles public school here. We have meetings with the teachers twice a year, but can reach out and schedule time with the teacher any time we want. The meetings are generally pretty productive.Yes. At the middle school they are a joke. You get 7 minutes. Here’s how EVERY SINGLE ONE goes:

I have the opposite experience. Here, at a school full of lefty families, they want us involved a ton. Even if they didn’t, the families are. Personally, I’m trying to become less involved with my kid’s performance. She needs to learn to fail and get embarrassed if she does crap work. Because I’m not gonna be around forever to hold her hand.I don't know how to make it better, but it needs to be made better.
The problem in certain progressive districts is that they believe parental involvement and help is anti-equity. It's very, very frustrating. Not all my kids' teachers believe that, but some do.
I agree with that thinking AFTER a certain age and I think that age varies between kids.I have the opposite experience. Here, at a school full of lefty families, they want us involved a ton. My folks checked our report cards and that was about it. Between me and my two brothers, we all had some measure of success.. and some spectacular failures. I'm talking about over the last 50 years.I agree with that thinking AFTER a certain age and I think that age varies between kids.
That actually reads like a pretty well grounded, understanding dad. If this was a "dads group" (which it's not) I would give you some props.Everything is handouts or online. She's pretty good about bugging the shit out of me about something or other that she's learned.
She never or rarely ever asks about her math. Which she gets an easy A in. In an Honors math class. Yet, she wants nothign to do with a major that would be based on math.
Yes, dear, make life harder on yourself by doing something you're not naturally gifted at. Here, let Dad show you how.
We get into some decent disagreements (and even some agreements believe it or not) about current social trends. For instance, and probaboy contrary to most of her peers, she doesn't believe kids under 16 (I said 18, we never truly agree) should be given drugs, hormones, surgery to address transgender issues. She also believes many people's desire to transition is rooted in something other than a medical need (i.e. severe gender dysphoria). I told her to be careful and to research her positions so we'll see.
So she must be learning something from someone. Can't wait for her to get to college. She's so wrapped up in personal dramas and other bullshit that, hopefully, will recede when she's away from these trashcan friends.
Well we EXPECTED to get info from the FBI, but then found out that the CIA was submitting briefs to the New York times as leaks... Pardon us for questioning if the teachers unions where creating reports with false data to prop up their insider status. Our bad, I guess!Uh the teachers doing the instruction. Who would you expect to let the parents know what the teacher is teaching that week? What’s in them? Homework, any special announcements for week, what’s being taught in reading, math, science, etc. Lifeskill of the week, maybe student of the week or special announcements. All kinds of unsavory things!
They didn't do any "landscaping" back them did they? Looked like an angry beaver, all of the time. Kinda like France. My first education course remotely involved with sex was a 1955.
Please home school, but never forget. All of your property taxes in Indiana still pay the teachers union, while you do their work. It pure china and has been for decades.Oh yes indeed. I don't know percentages but one of our local principles, who wanted to stop the DEI indoctrination, in Ellettsville Indiana , RBB school district was dismissed after nearly 30 years of service. He was an ex town board president and standing respected community conservative.Do you have kids?
What percentage of teachers do you think are out there trying to do their best and giving kids a good education?
Damn, you're old enough for two knee replacements, a shoulder reconstruction and prostate cancer 3 times.Nope ... I had a great time.
Seriously, I went to a grade school with 2 grades in a room (shows how old I am). The 3rd and 4th grade teacher was an old crank and would get up front and rant about something for 30 minutes. The rooms in the 4 room school were heated by a stove similar to the one in the picture below so any time I got a chance to go outside and bring in the coal for the heater I did... you'd be surprised how long that takes.
We fight the death penalty to stop one possible innocent person from dieing (earlier then normal). But don't hold the good teachers to account for not stomping a mud hole in those few that are giving them a bad rap.100% agree.
You're gonna have good teachers and bad teachers, but if you read this board, you would think (for the most part), teachers are trying to brainwash our kids and aren't trying to teach anything in schools.
I happen to think the good teachers way outweigh the bad teachers by a rather large margin.

No I don't give them a pass for potentially allowing our kids to be abused.
Yeah I am but so far none of those. However, I will say I don't see any gold in the golden years. They should be call the "Painful years".Damn, you're old enough for two knee replacements, a shoulder reconstruction and prostate cancer 3 times.
Mine did the same but got on our butt if the grades weren't up to par. I always look at my greatest success is raising a daughter that is a valuable person to society. I think too many people measure success by the amount of money a person has. People think a lot of money makes a person happy but that is not true in my opinion. Bill Gates was asked if having a lot of money made him happy and he said (paraphrasing) that no it didn't but what made him happy was to know that the didn't have to worry about paying his bills. Like I said I don't think having a lot of money makes a person happy but the lack of money (where you're always worried about paying all the bills) can make a person unhappy. My folks checked our report cards and that was about it. Between me and my two brothers, we all had some measure of success.. and some spectacular failures. I'm talking about over the last 50 years.
You took sex ed with your parents? And your therapist says you're fine? Well that's good...I had sex ed in 4th grade. It was in the gym, in the evening, with parents also attending. It was not a sanitized version. It was optional, but everyone attended. This was in a public school, in Ohio, in 1972. We all turned out just fine.
I think what truly makes someone happy is feeling useful and seeing the results of their work or deeds making others happy.Mine did the same but got on our butt if the grades weren't up to par. I had to chuckle at your "spectacular failures" comment and thought "Haven't we all had some of those'. Sometimes things just don't work out but if you don't have some failures then you've never lived in my opinion. It's like investing in stocks.... You're gonna pick some crappy stocks (cryptocurrencies in MCM case ) along the way. Hopefully you pick more winners.
I agree with most, maybe all of this. I have no interest in being that involved, but there are some practices I want to instill in my kids that the school doesn’t do. Like iPads. They suck. (I used to think it was a great idea but now do not). So now I make my kids hand write on physical paper any essays and math assignments. It’s noticeable how much better each of my kids, a boy and a girl, do this way.Interesting. Los Angeles public school here. IMHO, mIddle school is the start of when parents need to stay out of the classroom (here in elementary school, parents volunteer in classrooms and on campus a lot.) Some parents here complain about feeling disconnected from their child's education as a result, but (again IMHO) they need to take the initiative to be involved in their child's education at home. There are too many snowplow parents in this generation and their kids need to start learning how to take care of things themselves before the record really starts to matter.
Man, this "dad's group" mention really pissed you off. I'm fascinated by your disgust. What's going on there? That actually reads like a pretty well grounded, understanding dad. If this was a "dads group" (which it's not) I would give you some props.
Hang in there dad. Sh'e still got 14 more moods or personalities to go through yet.
Honestly I have no idea why that got to rolling out of my keyboard. I had some discussions earlier in the day along this topic that weren't really much at all, but... Somehow I got triggered I guess. Old fat and grumpy, that's me sometimes.Man, this "dad's group" mention really pissed you off. I'm fascinated by your disgust. What's going on there?

I agree that physically touching the work has lots of benefits. We always have our kids do math assignments on paper as well, but I don't think the teacher could read my son's essays if he hand wrote them. 🥺 He comes by it honestly though - my handwriting is terrible.I agree with most, maybe all of this. As far as what I’m looking for, I’d love to just know which subject they are on in each class so I could talk or find enrichment opportunities (podcasts, YouTube content, movies, etc. ).
Do LA public schools have magnet or selective enrollment high schools?
