He played at Butler, coached at Valpo. Yes, he turned down UK last spring, but has Indiana ties. Have we forgiven him for trying to deport Hanner Perea (or perhaps we should thank him for trying to do us a solid)? He's 54 which means there still a decent amount of tread left on the tires. His NCAA Tournament record is impressive, with an overall record of 20-11, including a National Championship. I think Dolson needs to at least give Scott Drew a call....

absolutely should call him. Cast a wide net and find the guy who blows you away.

Listen to the latest Crimsoncast podcast where they go over some of the candidates. Both Galen and Scott liked Drew and were impressed with what he has done at Baylor which was dreadful before he got there. I would put Drew right after May in the pecking order.

Didn't he tell Hanner Perea that he could have him deported if he picked IU over Baylor?

Listen to the latest Crimsoncast podcast where they go over some of the candidates. Both Galen and Scott liked Drew and were impressed with what he has done at Baylor which was dreadful before he got there. I would put Drew right after May in the pecking order.
Galen is also the guy who said IU should throw $10M at Painter. Credibility gone.

Fine to consider him, he can win big. But UK tried hard to get him last year and he passed. I remember @Victorbmyboy noted during the UK process how Drew and his family are deeply ingrained in the religious aspects of Baylor/Waco. If UK wasn’t a fit I tend to think IU may not be a fit either.

I'll just assume you're joking and leave it at that.
I'll just assume you're joking and leave it at that.
Not joking. I'd take Painter in a heartbeat if he was interested. After Izzo he's the next best coach in the BIG. IU would kill for the results he has put up at Purdue. It would be hilarious to steal him away from Purdue.

And, like most PU fans, Painter grew up an IU fan.

So, he'd be coming home!

I don't see anything wrong with doing that. Make Painter say no. Worse case you make Purdue up his contract.
I have posted many times that outside of the way he handled a couple of off-court incidents I have always like MP and wondered what he might have achieved at a place with the advantages of Indiana.

Painter's a great coach. Not quite Mean Gene's caliber, but close.

What’s your reasoning?
Not just my reasoning. Alumni is sour on him. He tried everything he could to get Crean in trouble. He’s the one who did Mark Adams dirty. Started the investigation on AHOPE. Hes a no for me and many others. Damn some of you have short memories. By the way. There are two Mark Adams. One was coach at Texas Tech now on Beards staff. The other is Indiana elite.

Yeah but the guy is one of the top 10 coaches in the country. I think we can forgive and forget for a stable winning program in return.

I'm not arguing Painter's credentials; I agree with your assessment. But I can envision how it would go.

In chronological order...

1. Dolson offers Painter one of the highest-paying contracts in college hoops history.

2. Painter says no.

3. Word gets out that Dolson offered the coach of IU's arch nemesis the position ... and he declined.

4. IU becomes the biggest laughingstock in all of sports, not just CBB.

5. Dolson gets burned at the stake, Salem style.

Plus, his salary is half of Woody’s, which is just hilarious

Come on G, hopefully you’re joking. I agree stupid comment, but the work he does is as good or better than anyone out there.
I think I'm being misunderstood.

I'm not knocking Painter at all; the guy can flat-out coach. Rather, I'm scoffing at the idea of IU considerating him. Of course he's qualified ... but it would never happen.

Did Galen really mean that was a valid option or was it in jest?

We all know Porkchop will spend his life at Purdue, which is fine with me because it ensures they will never win a Natty while he’s there.

I'm fairly certain he was being serious that IU should throw $10M at Painter, but I didn't stick around to confirm. Once I heard him say "hear me out," I was gone.
Yeah, I wouldn’t have wasted my time on that discussion either. His and Scott’s deep dives, on legitimate candidates, that they started yesterday are really good though.

Just because you view him as top 10 doesn’t mean he’s a top 10 fit. He’d be a square peg at IU. Think about it. He’s only coached at religious schools. IU is so far away from that.

I see no reason why we'd become the laughingstock for going after a top 10 coach who happened to grow up as a fan of the program, even if he's at our rival and even if he said no.

It would make Purdue fans giddy, sure, but anyone else with even half a brain would appreciate the attempt, even if it failed.

It reminds me of when Reggie Miller entered free agency, was courted by the Knicks, and he then turned them down to stay in Indy. Was that embarrassing for the Knicks to have tried? No... a hall-of-fame player was on the market and they gave it a shot
