Mama Goat was discussing the Dobbs decision tonight and we were talking about how America has this weird relationship with labor, in that we need people to do shit jobs, but we don't want to let them into the country, and she described the long term economic effects of overturning Roe better than I've heard. She said that we finally found a way to not need the immigrants anymore, because eventually all these unwanted children will come online and start doing those jobs that we otherwise would have needed immigrants to do.

Obviously, the labor market is more complicated than that, but I think she probably nailed the basic jist of it.

Yes, it is more complicated than that, and we do let them into our country for work-related purposes if done in a structured manner. I assume mama goat was joking re. the last comment.

I don't think that was the driving reason for pro-life people (it isn't for me) but an increasing birthrate would address several issues that have occurred because of the lower birthrate. Things like Social Security and the safety net will be impacted.

Other areas where you would see some changes over the long term could also involve the political strength of certain racial groups changing as well. Blacks are disproportionately impacted by abortion, a larger population for them potentially changes the trajectory of the group's political power.

I think it could change the stance on some other issues as well. With the populist bent that exists right now and a growing dissatisfaction with Corporate America on the right, now would be the time to push for some things on the parental support side if the Democrats were smart.

I think an unintended consequence of that would be an even deeper anti-immigrant movement. Given that a lot of jobs are becoming automated and even if there is an inkling of being not enough jobs for American-born citizens, the 'they come here and take our jobs' thing might heat up over the next several decades.

Said differently, I think THAT might become more of a reason for anti-immigrant sentiment as opposed to Trump's reasons to build a wall.
