We fired Sampson

Sampson did have a 5-year show cause penalty, which basically made it impossible to keep him. In hindsight though, I see your point.
I am ignorant on schools/coaches being suspended. I know slick Rick got what a year or 2 for the lovely young lady on the buffet table at Ryan’s? What was Wades?

Being serious though, what has been the biggest one ever? Would that have been it? For phone calls? Any real university would have no way got penalized that much for that. I’m sure we were basically begging them to tell us that so we could fire him.

And it was all self inflicted. IU had an intern bring up to a supervisor about the extra telephone calls which didn’t seem like it belonged to any particular department. Instead of telling the intern not to say anything or it’s fine. The supervisor decided to report it up the food chain where it could not be ignored, unfortunately. The intern didn’t want IU to fire Sampson, he just was making an observation. Sheesh.

That's what you call integrity.

Sampson caused Sampson's problems.

It's over with, his punishment completed. He's always been a very good coach.

Devil's advocate:

Sampson has admitted that his time in the NBA under Pop and Skiles had a big effect on his coaching. This Sampson is not the Sampson we had.

IU was 22-4 when Sampson was fired and he had a nice recruiting class coming in.

Todd Bozeman, at Cal, got caught paying 30k to a recruit's parents, and got an 8-year show-cause penalty, while Dave Bliss, at Baylor, got a 10-year show-cause penalty by encouraging players to lie about illegal payments.

Four years after giving Sampson his 5-year show-cause penalty, the NCAA mostly eliminated the phone policy. You're right, compared to what others have done, Sampson's punishment was way too excessive and goes to show how outdated the NCAA rules are.

Bud Mackey man…. He wore IU socks at his championship for Kentucky High school basketball! Couldn’t wait for him to get on campus!!! And that Ebanks dude!

But ya know it’s easy to look back in hindsight. Truth of the matter is at that time Sampson sh!t the bed on us.

He was rolling in year 2. It would’ve been an automatic 25 wins a year.

Yeah! We screwed up! We could've hired Mike Woodson to shepard the program while we waited on Sampson's suspension to end. :(

#$%^ Sampson and the horse he rode in on to @#$% Indiana. He was bad news here.

Nobody cared about the kids he was messing over by allowing the mess he did?

Except he did it twice. Repeat offender always gets hit harder. Sampson put IU in a no win situation and it’s weird how hard people defend him. IU should’ve never hired him in the first place. The same people who bitch about woody and the Buckner stuff dismiss the Herbert/Sampson stuff. Should’ve had several coaches instead of him.

It was a mistake to hire him as he already had issues at Oklahoma. At IU His players were failing and on drugs but hey, he wins, so check your ethics at the door.

I've always felt the good basketball coaches who don't really care about academics and following the rules should just go to the NBA. They don't belong.

And wouldn't it be reasonable to conclude that the 22-4 record was achieved through players that were improperly recruited? And therefore tainted?

As for just the intern uncovering evidence, given that Sampson was under sanctions coming to IU for improper contacts with recruits wouldn't you think that the NCAA would pay extra attention to his recruiting practices? I would. And since he was a repeat offender at the time that he was caught, wouldn't it be reasonable to assume that he would continue his practices if the intern was hushed? Obviously, the punishment that he was serving under was not a deterrent to him. It would seem reasonable that all the intern did was cause exposure of the offenses sooner rather than later with the same outcome.

And more than half of you STILL think it was for the better good. If we weren’t allowed a scholarship for a decade it wouldn’t have been worth it. IU the Harvard of the Midwest right boys???
It's mind blowing really and why we don't make final fours. We are certainly holier than thou

There are half of us who are IU fans who have never in our life seen any real success. We remember 1 Final 4 and were small children in the early 90’s FF era. Starving for success. Heck yeah I’m pissed over firing Sampson.
I think he learned from that situation. Had IU kept him, he would’ve continued to push boundaries and it may have been worse in the future.

Sampson is the coach to hire after the incident and his showclause/change. Due to the circumstances though, Indiana was probably never going to be a consideration.

I did not like the hire, only because he was on probation for cheating already.

Loved the winning until the same cheating was uncovered again.

He screwed us. He's the reason we can't overlook any coach with a blemish and set the wheels in motion for the wrecks of the last 3 coaches.

Ignoring a 5 year show cause is pushing boundaries alright…😑

At least we have a great view of Sampson’s success from way up here on this moral high ground.
If you advocate cheating you shouldn't be on an Indiana basketball board.

I'm not sure you have an angle to argue with. What is your point? IU should ignore cheating?
