Everyone keeps banging on woody. One thing his teams have done, that Archie’s and some of creans did not, is play hard all year long. Archie’s teams legit quit every year. Watching Romeo and co in TOs made me wanna murder someone. No passion, no heart. That shit drives me nuts. When I care more than you it’s a problem.

Every woody team will die for him. I mean watching Kanaan play d like that vs sisters of the poor made me way more excited than it should have. He was all in already, great to see.

Woody is not gonna have some great new offense this year, small wrinkles will be all he adds. To expect more is setting yourself up for disappointment. What we can count on is this team giving max effort throughout the year. Will take some time to gel, but should be playing its best ball sometime in 25’.

Everyone on the planet says we have the most talent on paper. We get that talent to play harder then everyone else, that’s gonna put us in a good position no matter if we are out schemed on the sideline.

Go Hoosiers let’s mess around this year and do some damage.

IU def has the talent, it is the scheme on the floor I don't love.

I’m not sure it’s that simple.

To me the greatest difference is that under Woody the team has responded at times and not totally folded. Last year was a good example, a 3 game losing streak, another 4 game losing streak, then we rip off 5 in a row. We weren’t a team that played hard at all times, it’s just that the wheels never fell off when it felt (to fans) that they were.

His teams seem to not quit. But they have lackadaisical stretches, just like all the Jekyll and Hyde squads we have been watching.

I can’t remember Cupps Galloway or X ever being lackadaisical. I remember them being bad at bball last year . Wasn’t for lack of effort IMO.

Rebounding is where I question how hard we play. For a big team last year, we didn’t rebound well. This years lineups is huge, so hopefully we are a much better rebounding team.

Galloway plays hard, Cupps gave everything he had, but it’s a team game. I’m less interested in the expressions on a couple of player’s faces than what I see the team do.

Did you see how IU looked playing Nebraska last year?

As a team we may play hard (edit: this year) but to suggest that under Woody as a team we have always played hard is to ignore the tape, or the eye test.

Mack has had some great 2 handed rebounds we did not see ever last year. Obviously Ballo is 10 a game just by playing 25 mins.

Playing hard with no direction and sub talent will make it look like that.

Sure they might not play hard every second, but not gonna quit. Also have some depth this year to let people sit. Especially at guard/wing.

Well, don’t get me started on substitutions. That’s a whole ‘nother story.

Edit: I 100% agree on the “direction” comment. It does no good to play hard if you aren’t executing with a purpose.

I would argue there was a bit of lazy play and lack of hustle in the 1st half against Eastern Illinois. I believe Ant Wright even posted a snip of both Ballo and Mgbako not running back on defense in one set.

1st half against E Illinois they did not play hard. MM doesn't play hard, hearing Kanaan dominates practices but hasn't translated in a game yet, we need him to breakout as the competition gets better.

100%. Again, not gonna play hard every second. The thing we can count on is them not quiting and bouncing back. We will probably see a lot of better second half’s this year. Much rather have that then tailing off. No quiting under Woody, I’ve never seen him lose a team during the year.

Overall, I would agree that Woodson coached teams have played hard most of the time. I suspect the inconsistencies come from things other than effort.

One of the things I admire the most about Woodson's teams is their resiliency. As you said, they don't quit on seasons. And I'd say they don't normally quit on games either. Even the blowout season ending games they've had a couple times since he arrived, effort really wasn't the issue, seemingly.

Going to have to assume you go into a coma every march. go back and look at the st Mary and Nebraska season ending games

Agree Woodson's teams usually play pretty hard. We have been blown out a lot the past three years, not sure all of that can be explained without considering effort. I guess it could be something else.

Playing hard all year long is pretty basic and should be expected. Hopefully we see that.

Except we didn't on D the first half of EIU. Watched it twice and IU was lazy on close outs, box outs, and fighting screens. Second half was soooo much better on D. If we play that level D, then watch out.

The O is fine. Ran some old stuff but added some new action off ball. We were fairly efficient. Reduce turnovers by a few, hit a few more 3's, and we're fine, IMO. Team will gel in time.

I don’t agree at all. Did they always play hard in every game last year? Did they play hard last Sunday? You’re lying if you say yes.

We have an abundance of college talent. Do we have 2 or 3 guys on the team that can carry us for stretches, and individually, consistently go get buckets? 90% of nba offense over the course of 82 games is loose and made up of 2 maybe 3 players taking a lot of shots. College is less than half the games that are 8 minutes shorter. There's a higher premium on the details and being a coach with a staff that checks all off the boxes. 3 straight years we've had unacceptable losing streaks, usually in January. Losing 5 of 7 or 4 of 6 in the nba is called a bump in the road or a bad road trip. Doing it in college means theres a problem.

Uncle Pete agreed to Woody proof this team by getting the abundance of talent we have. But we can't nba our way to a conference championship or a final 4. We don't have 7 game series to steal a game in or come back from 2 down.

Carlyle needs the ball in his hands to get his own in order to put up numbers. He's a great kid and plays hard defensively but the fit next to a ball dominant pg isn't there. We can't defend the perimeter with Mgbako at the 3 or with Goode on the floor at the same time. The next time you see Ballo 25ft from the basket initiating action in a "Princeton" set, no your not on acid, it's really happening. Look at the film.

Some of our best offense this year has been of the Princeton stuff. First, we don’t want our bigs clogging the lane and we complain about our spacing. Now we bring our big out to the pinch post to run some Princeton offense and we’re complaining about that. JFC

I happen to love the Princeton action... And while I wouldnt say Ballo playing the pinch post in that offense is 100% ideal, there really isn't any other spot you'd have him. And 100 times out of 100 I'd prefer us running that, over parking Ballo on the post and ISOing him there.

If we could get him more comfortable, and willing, to utilize the wing and corner outlets from that Princeton set, even better.

I guess if I were doing it, though...I'd run a lot more of the high pick and roll stuff with Ballo, when he's in the game. Maybe combine with some backside double screens, transition in to zoom action, etc... And then go almost exclusively with the Princeton sets when Ballo is on the bench. Malik is very good with the ball going to the basket. And while he also isn't great at reading and kicking to the wings or corners out of it, I have to think if it were focused on more, and ran more, he would get better at it.
