Hoosiers Split Doubleheader with Western Carolina; Win Series, 2-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana Baseball (5-8) split a doubleheader with the Western Carolina Catamounts on Saturday afternoon, first dropping a 4-1 decision before posting nine runs for a convincing 9-1 nightcap victory.

Game 1 - Western Carolina 4, IU 1
After the Catamounts put up a quick run in the top of first, the Hoosiers used a pair of two-out doubles to even the score. Junior Craig Dedelow took two bases off a hit to right field to get into scoring position for freshman Luke Miller, who roped a double to center.

Senior Evan Bell (0-1) needed just six pitches to silence Western Carolina in the top of the second, before the Catamounts took advantage of an IU miscue in the fourth to push across the eventual game-winning unearned run.

A two-run top of the fifth provided the game's final dose of offense. Western Carolina used three-straight hits to take a two-run lead. With two outs, freshman Jonathan Stiever replaced Bell and inherited a bases loaded situation. After plating one final run, Stiever stopped the Catamounts' threat with a punch out.

IU threatened in the bottom of the sixth and worked the bases loaded but came up empty. Back-to-back singles by juniors Alex Krupa and Tony Butler put two on, while a wild pitch pushed the duo into scoring position. Miller loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch but a grounder back to the pitcher ended the frame.

Game 2 - Indiana 9, Western Carolina 1
Senior Caleb Baragar (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in a six inning effort that included four strikeouts. He surrendered just four hits and gave no free passes.

Two-RBI performances by senior Brian Wilhite, freshmen Ryan Fineman and Miller provided the bulk of the offense for the Hoosiers, with Wilhite and Fineman also collecting two hits apiece.

Baragar needed just nine pitches to work through the first frame. The lefty continued his success with the Catamounts' batting order throughout the first three innings before the Hoosiers padded him with run support in the bottom half. Wilhite led off with an infield single and moved up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt by Krupa. After Dedelow singled to put runners on the corners, Miller sent a ball deep enough to right field for Wilhite to tag up and score.

The Hoosiers continued to cushion Baragar in the fourth, posting a three-spot, which was highlighted by sophomore Colby Stratten's double to right-center, which plated junior Austin Cangelosi. Sophomore Isaiah Pasteur worked a one-out walk to put two Hoosiers on the base paths, while a throwing error on Wilhite's bunt back to the pitcher granted another IU run to score. The Hoosiers went on the score once more in the inning.

Baragar ran into his only dose of trouble in the sixth inning, as Western Carolina worked the bases loaded but the lefty was able to freeze the Catamounts to leave three stranded.

The Hoosiers put up a four-run bottom half of the sixth with the help of a two-run double by Wilhite, which scored Butler and Stratten, who singled and was hit by a pitch, respectively. Fineman added two more runs in the frame with a two-run single to center.

Western Carolina avoided the shutout with one run in the top of the eighth, but a double by Miller scored Krupa, who singled, to make it a 9-1 ballgame.

Indiana will now travel to Evansville for a midweek matchup on March 15 with the Purple Aces. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

IU Finds Fight in Series Win

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Chris Lemonis finally got what he's been looking for from his Indiana baseball team in its 2-1 series win over Western Carolina.

The Hoosiers won a fight.

IU's offense came alive in a 9-1 series-clinching win Saturday afternoon after splitting the first two games of a three-game set with Western Carolina. The Hoosiers opened Friday with a 3-2 win, dropped an early matchup 4-1 Saturday to set up the rubber match that they won by eight runs.

"It was huge for us because we're kind of fighting that a little bit of not being able to bounce back," Lemonis said. "We're starting to build a little bit of toughness."

The Hoosiers and Catamounts exchanged blows throughout the weekend, first in a back-and-forth contest Friday that ended with freshman outfielder Luke Miller gunning down a would-be tying run at the plate in the ninth inning and then ending with each side splitting relatively comfortable wins in Saturday's double-header.

Up until this weekend, Lemonis' Hoosiers (5-8) still hadn't managed to show the type of fight he said they needed to grind out the two they picked up against the Catamounts (5-10).

In that sense, the series marked progress.

"Last night's game we fell behind, came back, fell behind, came back," Lemonis said. "We're fighting that a little bit in terms of learning how to do it."

Saturday's double-header showed the most extreme ends of being on the high and low ends of the spectrum.

The Hoosier offense struggled to pick up Western Carolina starter Bryan Sammons' pitches over his eight innings of work and couldn't muster enough run support to help senior starter Evan Bell en route to a 4-1 loss.

During the 40-minute break between games, Lemonis drastically switched up his lineup only to see the offense explode for eight unanswered runs in a comfortable victory.

"We just put them all in a hat and juggled them around and pulled the best ones out," Lemonis joked. "That was pretty much what we were doing...There was no rhyme or reason, just trying to switch it up a little bit."

Indiana's eight runs were more than enough to support senior Caleb Baragar on the mound.

He left the game after allowing just four hits and zero earned runs in six innings of work after being challenged to spark the Hoosiers after the loss in game two.

"It's huge. It gives us a bunch of momentum to go into the next week," Baragar said. "It's good for us to get rolling right now, especially at home."

Senior shortstop Brian Wilhite led the Hoosiers at the plate throughout the weekend, going 3-for-8 with five RBI. He also made a handful of plays with the glove, making Barager's job even easier on the mound.

"Coach kind of challenged us after that first loss," Wilhite said. "It's always hard to lose the first game and have to come back out, take the next nine innings and play them seriously. It was a great job by the hitters to come back out and have some good at-bats, get some swings in and bounce back."

Indiana will have a quick turnaround to Evansville Tuesday for a 6 p.m. midweek game before a four-game series at home against Toledo next weekend.

Moving forward, the Hoosiers are hoping to maintain the fight they found against the Catamounts to spark a much-needed stretch of wins.

"We're trying to really stay focused on the weeks and on the days," Lemonis said. "We talked about it before the weekend, winning the series. Right now we haven't put together enough good days to talk about sweeping, so we're just in that world. We're just trying to win some series and we're just trying to get some momentum going forward."

Lots of news in the IDS:

Lineup changes lead to offensive outburst in second game of doubleheader

by Zain Pyarili

IU broke through with nine runs in the final game of the series against Western Carolina after IU Coach Chris Lemonis made a few major changes to the batting order.

After producing just four runs over the first two games of the series and struggling to score runs all season, Lemonis placed junior centerfielder and normal three-hole hitter Craig Dedelow in the leadoff spot to try and jumpstart the Hoosier offense.

“We’ve got a lot of gaps in there right now,” Lemonis said. “Just trying to find the right mix and make up, there was no rhyme or reason, just trying to mix it up a little bit.”

Although Dedelow recorded just one hit at from the top of the order, IU as a team had 10 total leading to the 9-1 victory. Production was found from one through nine in the order with every starter, reaching base at least one time in the series finale.

Senior shortstop Brian Wilhite drove in six runs for the Hoosiers in the series as he batted out of the nine and eight spot in the order in each game.

On Friday IU found itself trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh after the Catamounts took the lead due to a balk by senior starting pitcher Kyle Hart. Wilhite stepped up to the plate, after junior first baseman Austin Cangelosi was hit by a pitch, and sent a two run home run over the left field fence to give IU the lead and ultimately the victory.

“I’ve had a lot of pull side hits that have really worked out for me,” Wilhite said. “I’ve been working on keeping my hands through the zone a little bit better. It’s been great for me to get back on track.”

Junior left handed pitcher Bryan Sammons held the Hoosiers to just one run through eight innings of work while striking out nine in the first game on Saturday. His performance was rather unexpected due to the fact that Sammons carried in an ERA over seven with 10 strikeouts on through 17.2 innings entering into the game.

Wilhite attributed the Hoosier struggles at the plate against Sammons to the fact that he was locating his off speed pitches very well and the aggressive, fastball hungry Hoosiers had a tough time getting on track with what was coming.

Freshman right fielder Luke Miller drove in three runs for IU in the series and batted second in the lineup in the finale after hitting clean up in the previous two games. As Miller raised his season average to .320 he was also able to knock two doubles on the weekend.

Cangelosi also played a large part in the run production for the Hoosiers picking up four hits on the weekend and continuously reaching base in front of Wilhite before moving into the clean up spot in game three.

“When you’re not swinging it well offensively, you tend to get beat down a little bit,” Lemonis said. “To be able to keep fighting back, and then we got some huge hits from some kids as the game went a long.”

Hoosiers bounce back to win series against Catamounts

by Michael Hughes

After a game the Hoosiers couldn’t seem to string any hits together, senior pitcher Caleb Baragar knew he needed to start quickly in the second game of the doubleheader.

He said he needed to attack the strike zone and work quickly to get the Hoosiers to on offense quickly. In the first inning he retired Western Carolina in order in just eight pitches.

The scoreless first inning was one of six for Baragar, who picked up his first win of the season in IU’s 9-1 win against Western Carolina in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday. The Hoosiers dropped the first game 4-1 but won Friday night 3-2 for their first series win of the season.

“It was huge for us,” IU Coach Chris Lemonis said. “We’ve been fighting that a little bit with not being able to bounce back. We’re starting to build a little bit of toughness and we got a great start from Caleb obviously which helped.”

The Hoosiers were once again led by senior third baseman Brian Wilhite. After driving in all three runs of IU’s win Friday night, Wilhite flashed his glove Saturday.

He made a few plays deep in the hole at shortstop, and on once occasion, charged slow bouncer before fielding the ball bare-hand and firing to first for the out.

The bare-handed play prevented a potential bases loaded situation in Baragar’s final inning on the mound. But he also was a threat again offensively.

In the second game Saturday, Wilhite went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the final game of the series.

“I just struggled at the beginning of the season,” Wilhite said. “It’s been good for me. I’ve had a lot of pull-side hits that have really worked out for me. I’ve been working on getting my hands through the zone a little bit better. It’s been great for me to get back on track a bit.”

But Wilhite went 0-for-2 in the first game as the Hoosiers universally struggled to make solid contact against Western Carolina starter Bryan Sammons.

Entering Saturday, Sammons was sporting a 7.64 ERA with 10 strikeouts in 17.2 innings. In his second win of the season Saturday, he pitched eight innings allowing one run and striking out nine Hoosiers. The one run was also the least Western Carolina has allowed in any game this season.

“He was throwing a lot of off-speed,” Wilhite said. “For our offense we’re very aggressive with the first pitch and very aggressive with the fastball. He was locating off-speed pretty well below our knees so we chased a little and got ourselves into some bad counts.”

But the offensive struggles didn’t continue into the second game Saturday, something Lemonis said he is proud of. He didn’t say much to his team, partly because he didn’t have much time to.

Wilhite said he had just about enough time to only eat a sandwich, some chips and get back on the field for the second game.

But with a reshuffled lineup, the Hoosiers responded, which is all Lemonis can ask for. At this point in the season, the mental toughness he team showed was enough.

And while the Hoosiers didn’t sweep the Catamounts, winning series is enough after the slow start to the season.

“We talked about before the weekend winning the series," Lemonis said. "We haven’t put together enough good days to talk about sweeping so we’re just in there trying to win series and get some momentum going forward.”
