Walz first speech as VP pick

For the record, I think Trump probably loses.

But it’s worth noting that you were saying the exact same thing about the election when Biden was the candidate. Right up until you couldn’t do that anymore.
With the support of Harris/Walz here….we can put to bed the “moderate independent” shtick that permeates the board
Exactly. It’s a progressive ticket

Will any of that bring prices down, a slowing economy, etc. no. And now the left added what will be perceived as a far left vp to go with a far left prez. It’ll be very close
The economy is still growing, but growth has slowed. Probably good news for interest rates, home buying, etc.

Great point about not wanting to hide a rising star like Shapiro. I was also hoping he'd be the pick, but I'm warming up to Walz in a hurry.
Shapiro seems to be gaining power and influence...that's a good thing for the party, and for the whole system, in my opinion. The more moderate leaders we have on both sides, that are able to keep the more radical factions of both parties in check...the better.

It felt like early on in the primary season, that Republicans like Haley and Scott might also be gaining a little bit of a foothold on the other side. I have to wonder if Biden had announced much earlier on, and if there had been an actual full Democratic Primary, if the GOP primary wouldn't have been a little more of a battle??

There is gravity pulling away from Trump on that side, without question. Its just not strong enough yet to move on past him. Can't wait until they do. My sincerest hope is people like Shapiro and Kelly, and Haley and Scott, end up being the ones that backfill leadership roles in 2028 and beyond. No matter who wins this November.

Minnesota typically ranks among the top states to live in for quality of life. Which issue are you going to pretend to care about on here that would wipe the shine off of him?

Minnesota's population is very healthy and active relative to its neighbors, which I find interesting. The best comparison is Colorado - similar lifestyle and dynamics with different topography. Minnesota is very blue, carried by Minneapolis and St. Paul (used to be Iron Range b/c of unions, but that is probably shifting some with Trump's appeal to union workers), but it gets red quickly (30 mins into the suburbs in any direction).

Lots of hiking, camping, boating and water activities, hunting, fishing. Summers are among the best in the country. Winters are among the worst.

One thing is for sure... they aren't doing those quality of life studies in February!

An extension of Trump's tax cuts will add trillions to the deficit. His tariffs and trade policies are job-killing and destructive.
We can extend the tax cuts and cut spending to make it work. Do we want to start going thru the budgets?

This board is in the weeds when it comes to politics and policy. It's not a microcosm of the voting public. Many/most voters pay relatively little attention to policy detail and make voting decisions based on energy, enthusiasm, momentum, likeability, relatability, whether a candidate is telegenic, etc.

There's a story in my family that my great-grandmother voted for Kennedy in '60 because he was good-looking and Catholic. Millions of people make their voting decisions in a similar way.

I agree with this….

The guy was a head high school football coach who won a state title AND served as the faculty advisor for the school's gay-straight alliance club. And he's also a meat and potatoes Midwest guy. Talk about checking a lot of boxes and covering a lot of ground.

He was a Head Coach at a small school in Nebraska and an assistant coach on that state championship team in MN...

He doesn't reflect the values of anyone in the Midwest outside of a few democrat run cities...

When faced with his toughest decision that truly affected people's lives (the burning of Minneapolis) he either just froze up and dithered or he was complicit thru purposeful inaction...

You want a true measure of the man ask his fellow NCO's that he left hanging when he dodged his deployment to Iraq...

Aside from Bernie/Omar I’m not sure you could create a more radical ticket.
If Trump/Vance can keep to the script for the next 3 months, there's a very, very compelling argument to be made against the Harris/Walz ticket...for anyone that's not pretty entrenched as a very left progressive.

Hammer them for 3 months on their far left record. Use your nicknames if you want. Get nasty on immigration and economy stuff. Scratch your itches to be assholes with that kind of stuff. But in the end, Trump is, to his core, a narcissistic, equal opportunity asshole. So he'll continue to poke and prod at her race, her gender, all the things that satisfy his urges. And it could end up costing him the White House, again. Hopefully if that happens, enough GOP people will wake up and realize what a shit human he is, and move on from him.

I don’t disagree and wasn’t in favor of the tax cuts at the time. Shit they have actually hurt me with the changes in mortgage interest caps and standard deductions, among others.

That being said, when a potential president has repeatedly touted equity of outcomes and socialist views, that means they are coming for my pocketbook as I’m hitting peak earning potential. Higher income taxes, wealth taxes, removal of capital gains… it means I’m getting fvcked.

If people want to increase taxes, do it to Boomers who benefited from the lowest taxes and highest asset appreciation in history. Or just start another COVID like virus to wipe them out. Either way works for me.

I like what he had to say and how he said it. Solid pick.

Good speech.

Not sure I buy that Trump will be able to take away Affordable Care Act, Social Security, and Medicare. I would have removed that small portion from his speech. I wouldn't put it past Trump to try but his main agenda is always to help himself and has wealthy donors and that is the drum I would beat into everyone. Walz did comment on Trump being only about himself.

When Trump singlehandedly blocked the border bill, hard for them to get nasty on immigration and keep a straight face but then lying is pretty par for the course in politics. You're right that he is better off attacking those areas though.

Easy to play a game of choosy doosey and then leave off 95% of the story. We can just start with the insane comment about dodging his deployment to Iraq. Military family--father fought in the korean war. Walz enlisted when he was 17 or 18, served in the national guard and had deployments all over the country, not to mention the arctic circle. Worked disaster relief and also spent time overseas. He spent 6 months overseasn following 9/11, won a bunch of medals and retired from the military after 24 years.

The irony is here is that the guy you are supporting was and is one of the biggest pussies on the planet and just couldn't make it to Vietnam because of phony bone spurs that nobody has any record of. Always talks a good game, but never delivers.

The left has no polices besides gutting the middle class, increasing income inequality, and adding more people to the government payroll.

Cori Bush is a moron, but Lauren Boebert makes Bush look like Ayn Rand.

This is the most relevant post thus far from left leaning posters (with apologies to Mark Milton and Ohio Guy) on this topic. I only take umbrage with the notion that people in the GOP, even the most ardent supporters of Trump, don't already realize what a shit human he is. I say that they, like me, vote for him in spite of already knowing he's a shit human. You dance with who brung ya so to speak and while the lesser of two evils may still be evil, he's the evil they can live with.

Nevertheless, your hope that they move on from Trump the shit human has likely been decided by father time and his own lifestyle proclivities. If he loses, he will be in no shape to run it back again in 2028. I reckon, win or lose, this is his GOP swan song.

I must say though if I allow my imagination to wander off into the giggleweeds a bit, what if Trump loses and this sets in motion a full on fracture of the party? Let's say he starts a new political party or usurps an existing one and Don Jr runs in 2028 at the top of that ticket? How much of the current MAGA voter base in the GOP does he siphon off, POTUS-ly speaking? An ironic twist that the "Never Trump" contingent of the GOP in their crusade to save the party could end up bringing about it's demise. But hey on the bright side Trump could finally deliver on his promise to "Drain the Swamp"...at least the GOP half.

Oh, and my sign reads long haired freaky people need not reply, so no need for the Hickorys and Willdogs to tuck their junk up into their cracks and come in and ask me why.
