Tony Bennett

If he's not checked out of the game, I'd be all in on Bennett...
I'd take his defensive teams but I would want to see a more uptempo offense. That won't happen with him.

I thought we should have gone hard after Bennett back when we hired Crean and then again back when we hired Archie. Either time I think it would have been a home run. Now? I think the ship has probably sailed for both IU and TB. We’re in a different era at this point. Beard is the gift horse looking us squarely in the mouth right now IMO…

Reality don’t see any retired guy coming back into what’s going to be a complete rebuild. Even with NIL/portal.

Was a solid coach. That said, GTFO. Far better choices and this team would be beyond frustrating to watch and most games would create a nap in game.

Great career, but he had a great job at UVA and quit. My son-in-law is a UVA grad and he said it was often painful watching UVA even when they won. Great D, good shot selection, low turnover, struggle to score. No thanks to Tony B.

Great coach but not the greatest offense. I doubt kids would want to play 50 point games but if a bunch of guys say no I like Bennett just not in my top of my list.

Bennett would win massive at IU. With IU's resources he could keep kids around for 2-4 years, and that's how his teams were winning ACC titles every year.

Bennett is also about as good a person and basketball mind as there is. Having seen UVA up close during those years, their fans would run through a wall for him. He'd bring passion back to the state and IU basketball.

I agree he would do well here. It's a shame he's not an option.

He coached two great shooters Klay Thompson and of course Kyle Guy. I hope to hell the next coach isn’t biased against shooters. We have been in a multi season multi coach shooting drought.

I'd suggest the next Basketball HC take the Football approach and hire a Defensive Co-ord. and an Offensive Co-ord...

Bennett might make a good basketball D coordinator... A position like that might interest him enough to come out of retirement and his being in just an Assistants role wouldn't be devastating hit to the program if/when he decided to re-retire...

I'll bet there were folks saying the same thing in the early 70s, when they were trying to find a coach for the Hurryin' Hoosiers, and hired a young defensive-minded coach with a rule-based offense. Winning is never boring.

I still chuckle over Painter selling TKR on coming to WL to play on the wing because he didn't want to be the "next TJD" and be stuck at center. But, guess what: I think he's super happy where he is, even though he has to play the 5. No one ever gets bored or frustrated with winning, except those who aren't. I'll gladly support Bennett, McCollum or Mr Magoo and 40-39 games as long as we have the 40.

I guess I can see a concern over getting talented kids who don't want to play in a more methodical system, but the most important facts are: are we winning, and putting kids in the NBA. If you are doing those things you'll get plenty of kids who want to play there. UCONN is doing just find and kids are accepting playing for a nutty ahole. Not like that hasn't happened before.

Team success is a factor in NBA evaluations and an NCAA championship helps a lot. UConn has players drafted that couldn’t stick and never would have been drafted if they played say at Mississippi Valley. Exposure and team success are invaluable.

Agree. Above all things, winning matters most. I would rather win with a different style / offense. There was nothing about Knights teams that was boring and certainly did not lack offense. There are plenty of great coaching options out there that include scoring points and playing defense where we score more than 50 points a game.
