Tom Allen To Clemson as DC

They had the easiest path to the Final Four of any team in the CFP - - SMU at home and Boise State. Again, we'll see how they are without all-World Tyler Warren. And Franklin, I predict, will soon (within 12 months) resign or be terminated.
Yeah, I think you overstate the importance of Warren. PSU will be fine and will remain in the CFP or on the bubble annually. They were in the Big 10 Championship, so they had already proven themself plenty formidable prior to beating two very good teams that just happened to be lesser in the pool of very good teams.

This is the moment of truth for IU. Will they try to compete with Penn State financially?

Not sure what the appeal of Penn State is over IU right now other than maybe a slightly higher salary.
Far bigger brand for the resume, better deeper talent to work with.

Now from a quality of life standpoint for your family, Btown is a tremendous place to live with deep dining and cultural options and good schools. Happy Valley is a shit hole.

It's not just Warren (see my post #79). But Warren on O and Abdul Carter on D are special players and Penn State's difference-makers in 2024. They've both played their final college game.

"They are the kind of performers Penn State has rarely owned at the same time, on either side of the ball."

Let's revisit this in early November, as the Penn State fans become increasingly restless and the boo-birds get louder.

Again, they lose guys like them every year and then just replace them with the next blue chip. Maybe not as good, but good enough. And then they have guys at other positions that rise up, get better and tend to shine.

If you compare what we lost in terms of production, to what they are losing, we lost a ton more. We've had a good portal season, so we're optimistic about being as good next year, but they don't lose nearly as much as we do and they have 4-5 star guys just waiting for their opportunity.

I can make a pretty good argument that we bring back way more then they do.

Hell, I'd wager we're the only team with 3 all Americans returning.

Let’s chat again late next season.

I do agree that both of them are very special. Yet, last year they lost their starting tackles(1st and 2nd round), two edges (1st and 3rd round), tight end that started over and alongside Warren in the top of the 4th, plus their starting center. When you are able to recruit the way that they are, you have talent to replenish. Please don’t make me give PSU any more credit 😂

We lose our AA QB, top 2 RBs, TE, 3 starting OL, 3 of our top 5 receivers, our best 2 DTs, multiple starting DBs, a stud LB.

I mean, that's a lot. You can't win 10-11 games with just 3 AAs. You gotta have pieces all over the field. Again, optimistic we've picked up nice replacement pieces, but if you're just talking about losses in personnel, I don't think it's close.

They lose not only the d end, but they lose the best tight end in the nation in Warren. They also lose a bunch of starters on defense, namely Kobe King, Jalen Kimber and Kevin Winston. They also lose basically their entire wide receiver core.

They also lose their backup qb, who had a pretty nice package there for him.

They bring back Aller, their top 2 running backs and most of their offensive line. On defense, they are bringing back a couple defensive ends and their d-tackles.

They are losing really solid talent.

you have to factor in more than just losses if trying to figure out how PSU and IU will do next year.

Are Player Arrivals plus retained Player Improvement > or < what the teams lost? Will either team have a glaring hole that they couldn't fill? At this point, it is just guess work.

A guy for Athlon Sports just did a way-too-soon top 25 (=5) for 1025-26 that had OSU #1, PSU #4, Oregon #6, IU #18, ILL #21; Michigan #22, and Nebraska #27.

I think that's a little too high for PSU. Warren & Carter were huge for that team. There's going to be a drop-off there. I also think Pribula had unique talents as a running QB that they missed in the playoffs and will continue to miss in '25.

I don't think they've "solved" the WR problems in the portal. They lost Wallace who caught 46 for 720 yds and Evans who was at 21 for 415.
They gained Hudson from USC who went went 38 for 462 and who seemed to have similar issues to those with Wallace & Evans. The wild card is slot receiver Ross, from Troy, who had huge stats --something like 79 for 1000+ yds as I recall. He is a smallish guy, he played at Troy, so we'll see how that translates. Perhaps Hudson + Ross is a small + over Wallace/Evans, but no one will come close to replacing Warren at TE.

I guess the wildcard for them is whether Allar kicks it up a notch. He certainly is talented , but he hasn't stepped it up in the big games. He was throwing off his back feet the whole game v. ND. He looks great getting off the bus and in warm-ups but the jury is still out, that's for sure. How would he have performed this year with Rourke's injuries?

Comparing PSU to IU.........I don't think they're going to be 14 spots better than us. We have had losses, but we appear to have more than able replacements at TB, QB & TE. Hemby has averaged 5.3 for his career at Maryland, very seldom fumbles, and is a very solid pass receiver. Beebe had great stats the last two years for a weak UAB team. Mendoza is the 2nd or 3rd rated portal QB. I like our prospects at LB. Our secondary should be improved. DT most concerns me, as Carpenter & West were quite a duo. But Tucker, Burris, and the 2 portal guys look solid.

PSU had a HS class ranked 15th, much better than ours, but our portal haul has been better than their's.

Obviously, there are always uncertainties. We were pretty fortunate last year with injuries. Maybe Mendoza is less than expected. But going into the year I'd think it would be more like PSU #6, IU #13.

I suppose one can argue that we overachieved in '24, while PSU probably achieved consistent with their talent. We could come back down to earth, but it doesn't feel like that will happen absent serious injuries.

I have no opinion as to OSU, Oregon or Illinois, but I have to believe Michigan & Nebraska are underrated. Michigan has the #1 HS QB recruit coming in, as well as the #1 portal TB. Nebraska is getting some real prospects in the portal...last time I saw they were #6 ranked. They also had losses to the portal, but there's a net improvement there.

Two programs going in the opposite direction.
Two programs going in the opposite direction. Yet the one supposedly on the way down is a top 5 consensus team next year (no surprise).

Based on the various early preseason rankings for the 2025 college football season, here's a summary of the top teams consistently appearing across multiple polls:

## Top Contenders

1. Ohio State Buckeyes
2. Texas Longhorns
3. Georgia Bulldogs
4. Penn State Nittany Lions
5. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Ohio State, coming off their national championship victory over Notre Dame, is the most common pick for the top spot[1][2][5]. The Buckeyes will be led by star players like wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and safety Caleb Downs[1][5].

Texas is frequently ranked second, with the highly anticipated debut of quarterback Arch Manning[1][2][5]. The Longhorns are coming off a strong season that saw them reach the SEC title game and CFP semifinals in their first year in the conference[2].

## Other Top-10 Teams

6. Oregon Ducks
7. Clemson Tigers
8. Miami Hurricanes
9. Alabama Crimson Tide
10. LSU Tigers

These teams round out most top-10 lists, with some variation in order depending on the source[3][5][8].

## Notable Trends

- The SEC and Big Ten dominate the top rankings, reflecting their continued strength in college football[9].
- Many top teams, including six of the top seven in some rankings, will be replacing their starting quarterbacks[4].
- The expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format will be in its second year, potentially influencing how teams are ranked[6].

## Teams to Watch

- Arizona State Sun Devils: Projected as the top team in the Big 12 by some analysts[3].
- Michigan Wolverines: Despite losing key players, they're expected to bounce back with incoming talent like quarterback Bryce Underwood[7].
- Florida Gators: Showing promise after a strong finish to the 2024 season[3].

It's important to note that these rankings are subject to change as rosters continue to evolve through transfers and NFL draft decisions. The 2025 season promises to be exciting with new quarterbacks taking the reins at many top programs and the second year of the expanded playoff format[4][6].

Nebraska had the #1 QB come in last season and you saw the struggles he had. Michigan counting on improving with a freshman QB is not good for them.
