I distinguish college campus from college town. UCLA is the nicest college campus I’ve visited, despite the fact it is in a big city. Another example of this on a smaller scale is ND/South Bend. SB is not a college town but ND is definitely a classic college campus. I took grad classes at UW Madison in the summer, so my experience with Madison is admittedly not typical. The town itself was less busy than it is during the school year, I’m sure. As far as classic college towns are concerned, Ann Arbor, Princeton, and Charlottesville are among my favorites.
Another distinction I’m familiar with here in DC is G’town vs. GWU. If you’re on the G’town campus you wouldn’t know that you’re in a big city. Conversely, the GW campus mainly consists of a group of buildings in the middle of the city. If not for the signs on the buildings, you wouldn’t know that you’re on a “campus.”
Lol. The chemistry building? Nobody who spent time in there has fond memories.

The conspiratorial side of me thinks he may be eying the IU job in concert with Dolson behind the scenes. I am actually of the opinion that Dolson has been manipulating things to get this guy with the right timing. I don’t think he lost any sleep over May getting snatched up last year. May has a Crean vibe to me, as far as results on the court. Otzelberger has a higher ceiling. JMO.
Apparently the Tilly discord is saying Otz to IU is done. Ink being dry. Can anyone confirm? @Jim Coyle @Cavanagh

Yeah seems weird he would agree to anything with a potential FF run still ahead. I would be happy if he was the hire though.
Otz makes sense for a bunch of different reasons. But its hard to believe anyone would know its him, at this point. If his team this year gets healthy, he's a legitimate Final Four contender. I can't fathom he'd be to the point where "its done".
I think what I would be most excited about is his ability to use the portal to build a team that fits how he wants to play. Iowa State has a collection of "dudes", some that are pro level players, but few/none of them were at the top of anyone's lists. Assuming he carried that mindset to IU, and used our resources to get maybe a few "better" guys that fit his style...he could be a monster here.
But I gotta think his "floor" would be better than anything we've seen consistently since mid 90's.
I would take him over McCollum in heartbeat. I want no part of any mid major hire and especially ones who have only coached D1 a year or two.
I'd love a McCollum hire. Just as much as a TJ Otz hire. But I'd have to admit, an Otz hire would feel more "solid".
So did we for a couple years after Knight was fired. Did he recruit a bunch of solid guys and leave a good situation when he left?
For about 12 months, sure...I said consistently.
12-13 Crean was better than all but a 7-8 of RMK's teams.
First season at new school before NIL and then the post covid season. Nothing burger for me.
I bet Dusty is kicking himself (if his wife isn’t) over not waiting another year for the IU job. Michigan can’t feel as right to them.
From the articles I've read on the Mays... nothing jumps out to me that they're "loving" Ann Arbor. But one thing that did jump out was his wife was very anxious to get out of the Bloomington area years ago, and I haven't seen it mentioned, by either of them, that their clamoring to come back "home".
