Thoughts about whether Trace will return next year?

What is the advantage for him to leave if he is not a first round pick?
Back in the day yes it took four years like cheaney Now it only seems to hurt guys to stay longer. I hate the nba but they draft on potential. Hope he stays but I dont see it

Not crazy about the IU legend narrative. I’ve seen that posted a lot here: player X can go to generic university and be just another player, or play for IU and be a legend for the state of Indiana. It all sounds great, but it’s really not the case.
I think it is if you are loyal, going through the program generally treats you right, you're never going to starve for anything at least in life. I think he's a tweener in the NBA and not very draftable. It's kind of up to him and what he wants out of life or basketball. Let's not pretend his dad isn't Dale, I'm certain he's getting goof advice

I thought trace had a step dad and was not really involved with his real dad.

He's gone but DJ White was here 4 years and got drafted in the 1st round right?

He’s going to receive a 6 figure NIL offer to stay. If he feels comfortable turning that down, it’s good to be him.

He has been a terrific college player. Explosive , athletic and physical. Excellent rebounder and NBA level spin move. Runs the floor well for his size and has strong moves around the basket. Above average to excellent shot blocker at the 4 and plays hard defense. Dunks with authority, i.e.. finishes strong inside.

Got to be a team that takes him 2nd round and I think that will work for him.

17 pts, 8 rebounds, 2 blks a game over 3 years.... anyone have anything positive to say? Let's see you score 1600 points in the Big Ten.
The topic isn't a poster's ability to score points in college ball. The issue is TJD's skills and how they translate to the NBA. Woodson said he's ready for the pro game, so he should know, but I think he has limited NBA value because at his size he's got to be able to shoot, everybody has to be able to shoot in the NBA today. Unless he plays great defense, which he didn't against St. Mary's, where/how does he play? He has some very quick moves that look like they translate to the NBA, but he will face bigger, stronger bodies in the NBA.

I see G-league or Europe (probably not a good time to be playing in Europe for obvious reasons).

Same thought here. Trayce seems to take it all upon himself when IU falters. Would he be better off escaping the grind of the B10 and the pressure of IU through the portal? I'd hate it, but it's a real question.
The NBA is a bigger grind.

Let's not forget that Steve Alford was a first round pick. WTF! Hoosiers were livid when the Pacers passed on him and took a skinny kid from UCLA instead.

You might be right, but if I had a buck for every time an IU fan said a player was gone as if their opinion was a fact and the player stays I’d have several thousands of bucks from that. Hell, I’d have many thousands from Cody Zeller coming back alone. I’d also have thousands more from TJD playing the last two years. An opinion is stated like, “I think he’s going to try the NBA.” “He gone,” is stated like it’s a fact. It’s not. It may sound snappy and may even be true in the end, but unless TJD announces and hires an agent, it’s not a fact..

He probably needs another year to be a first round pick.

I agree with most here that he is likely gone. I don’t think that he’ll be a first round pick, maybe even not a second. It’s sad but true that if TJD would’ve departed after his freshman year, he would’ve most likely been a late first round pick and signed a two year $6M guaranteed contract.

I’m intrigued by the fact that TJD chose not to participate in Senior Night festivities (unlike Race and Parker). Leaving the door a bit open, maybe?

If we had a good NIL program he’d be back because he could make more here then 2nd round NBA guarantee…but we don’t. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Serious question, what do you know about IU’s NIL program? I don’t know a thing about it. What players are participating? And how does it compare to other teams in the B1G?

I think he stays or he'd already announced he's going. The St. Mary's game holds no standing for his decision. He can increase his production with his right hand and show he can score from 10-14 ft. if he stays. Who better to teach him than an EX-NBA coach? He's already strong but stronger is a + for future performance. Woodson is the biggest influence on him for this decision.

Can’t be a fact until it is. Still doesn’t change the probability that “He gone”…

Money is not an issue for IU alumni. Never has been, never will be.

He might be gone. Probably more likely than not, but it’s not at all definite. Only TJD knows what he’s really leaning towards.

Just remember at the end of the day, everyone still thinks you are a fool and your opinions mean nothing.
As does your input. You are on a message board. You are not an expert nor are your teenage girl infatuations with the players. Looking forward to your food reviews with players and their favorite restaurants, along with who is the funniest on the team.
You are full of yourself and as full of shit as I am. The perennial “guess who I rubbed shoulders with” guy. Nobody takes any of your input as some great insight.

I am going with 18 footer personally.

I think he's gone, but that he should stay. We have a good class coming in, including JHS who should make an instant impact. We aren't losing anyone (yet) and will probably get a boost from the transfer portal. If he stays, he will finally play on a contender and have the chance to make a real run and boost his value. The biggest knock on him is that he's not a winner, and next year he will have every opportunity to change that.

He's still not ready for the NBA. Still needs outside shot beyond 5'. Never shoots face-up more than 5' out, and still very seldom uses his right hand. A 6' 9" Forward in the NBA needs to be able to shoot, and hit, 10-15 ft jumpers, and needs to be able to shoot, and make, 3 pointers. He needs another year under Woodson, to develop those skills, and to get tougher. He may be a first round pick, because of potential, and may be drawn by the money, but he'll wind up in the Development League. With Bates, Geronimo, the incoming guards, one a 5*, and a 4* 6'8" Forward, and, hopefully, Thompson, Galloway and Leal, IU could be a real contender for the BIG championship, and go much further into the NCAA. Wouldn't it be great to see him actually step out and shoot, and make, 3 pointers? Would be awesome, and open so much more, for the offense. I think all the returning players need to spend the summer shooting 3 pointers and free throws. And Trace needs to stay put and help IU back to elite status. Next year he could be a Lottery pick, for sure, and make the big bucks. Stay put, Trayce!

The only thing we know for sure is that three scholarship players have to move on for three incoming Freshmen. If only three leave there won’t be any players from the portal coming in. A lot of teams are in this situation due to COVID. I’m sure Coach will be sitting with each player and discussing how the season went for each of them and what is best for each of them. It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

A few gift cards pretty much sums it up.

I’m not totally convinced he’s gone. Both choices have their risks and benefits. He can get drafted late in the second round, get paid, and work to prove himself for a second contract. He can stay at IU, build a huge media hype about the upcoming season, and have a chance to win the B10. It’s not a forgone conclusion. Afterall, he knows that he will never start in the NBA.

I'm unclear whether when TJD met with Woodson with his dad, was it Dale Davis or his step dad?

Next year he will be more explosive, quicker and stronger. He still has not established a mid-range game. His basketball IQ will continue to improve. He will be more mature. He will be less prone to say things like we feel we can beat anyone and then go out and lay the biggest tournament turd in school history.

And the there is that thing about going to school for an education and this being some of the best years of one's life...

He might want to consider another year.
At IU or somewhere else? Just asking?

There was talk last year he might transfer to MSU. Perfect college player and just what MSU needs. We have a great NIL opportunity (see Tucker) . He was down to MSU ,UCLA and IU originally

Cody Zeller didn't show his shooting skills in college. TJD may not be ready for the NBA, but he will learn how to be a professional player. He won't learn that with another year in college.

We expect college to give us the skills to be successful in our careers. We learn the first day at our first job that college was the first step and we have a lot to learn. The only way to learn is to get started.

I think had this game been closer, he might have given the old “unfinished business” thought process some consideration. I think this game deflated him and he’s done with his IU career and wish him the best at the next level.
Have you spoken to TJD, or are you the one who got deflated? Not judging. I think most of us got at least a little deflated, but I couldn't imagine trying to speculate how the loss would affect TJD emotionally. The truth is the kid needs to develop a right hand, and a medium range jumper, at the very least, if he has hopes to stick in the NBA. To me, the real question is whether he would be better served in the G league or another season at IU. I think it would be the G League.
