How can this kid be the best dunker of all basketball possibly ever, yet can't even get on the bench of a NBA team?

Ummm... because he's 6'2" and doesn't have point guard skills, and also lacks the drop dead shooting ability to be a tiny 2 guard that you could hide by pairing with a tall PG.

good thing he wasn't, then

He was invited to the dunk contest, not as an NBA all-star. You can be in the dunk contest or 3-point contest as even a bottom of the roster or 2-way player. Remember all the 3-point shootouts won by Craig Hodges back in the day, when he only got in games when the Bulls were up by 30?
