This is hard. Bc the board has had chapters. Going back to buzz and trover and so many others back then. That crazy lawyer that was entertaining. Geico or whatever. Those were different times

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your posting Brad along with many others and this will have some recency bias but I’m going to break the rules and nominate co-champions.

COH and MARV. Together they debated more than really anyone without ever resorting to name-calling etc. they were also an ongoing reliable presence. I’m not certain we’d have a board without them

Both of these are deserving...

My vote is for Rockfish too. He was far and away the smartest poster on here when he was posting regularly.
He might have been the smartest but that didn’t translate into professional success. He was irritated with all those who were much more successful than him.

He was a hardcore lib and everyone was slack jawed and if he got pinned he’d start screaming dunning. He was hardly the smartest poster on the board. Dunning literally defines the board save but a few topics near and dear to all of us.

He was definitely an entertaining poster tho and very smart and very much missed

Business smarts are a different kind of smarts. I sure as hell wish I had them

My second year out of college the firm I worked for hired the kid with the number one score on the CPA exam. Extremely intelligent young man with no ability to communicate with clients. Never succeeded in public accounting.

I had a partner for a short time who was an engineer out of college. Then opened his own men’s clothing shop that failed. In his 40s he went back to IU, got the classes he needed to sit for the CPA exam. He passed with one of the highest scores. He was always the smartest person in the room. He had the tax code memorized but no ability to apply it to real life business issues. Almost every client I turned over to him wanted nothing to do with him and his arrogance.

I think Rockfish was one of, if not the smartest, posters here. For sure the smartest in my time here, in my opinion.

He was certainly far and away the biggest asshole I ever encountered here, that’s for sure. I mean, aside from the mental midgets like hickory and Dr hoops.

I’d cast my vote for Marv and COH as co winners.

Where exactly did he fall short of your definition of "professional success"? Didn't make enough money?

Didn’t he say he was an irs lawyer. I can’t imagine anyone on earth went to law school with the objective of being an IRS lawyer.

I’ll take Marvin, Co and Goat as the best posters of all time.

Impossible to know the IQ of any posters on social media but even when I am being an asshole with Goat he amazes me with his knowledge of almost any subject that comes up.

If I was ever crazy enough to get in the restaurant business I’d hire him in a minute to run the operation if he accepted the offer.

Just as we refer to George Washington as The Father of Our Country, the Father of the Water Cooler has to be Buzz123.

As Buzz departed The Cooler, recall him giving special recognition to Rockfish even though Buzz labelled himself as being conservative.

I never read one post from Buzz but listening to others, sounds to me like he might be the all-time greatest.

Why would you think that beneath him?
Great legal minds should be killing it at Dentons, Barnes & Thornburg, Bose McKinney, Ice Miller and other firms of that ilk.

My largest client uses Dentons. The estate planning partner we have used for years is phenomenal. They have great minds to cover every issue that comes up in our business.

I have no doubt that Rockfish has great intelligence. It’s wasted at the IDR. Something must be holding him back.
