I think with Matta and Fife running the show instead of Woodson we would probably be a 25 win team year in and out. The way Matta recruited Indiana I doubt Mullins and company would of left.

To be fair, a lot of us fans thought the same thing, myself included.
While it didn't work out, at least the Archie hire made basketball sense ... unlike the baffling Bigfoot hire.

Didn't he also leave OSU because he was basically physically unable to continue? Left one job and failed a physical to get another high D1 job. Doesn't sound like BS to me. I think he had severe back issues that ultimately were treated and got better. He looked broken down and in pain from what I remember at OSU at the end.

Butler should never have dropped those two buy games. And Houston was a disaster. But they have 3 good wins—SMU at home and Northwestern and ranked Mississippi State at a neutral site.
That’s with probably with 1/3 of IU’s NIL resources. The question is how would Matta do at IU v. Woodson?
We'll never know. But we know how he's doing with his own roster. He's losing to NDSU and Austin Peay. Do you think he has better rosters than those teams?

I agree with you completely. OSU was THE B1G school while Matta was there. I remember OSU going on the long run of being undefeated one season. IU vs OSU was on CBS on NYE night. They were always the team the B1G was competing with.
Be it his coach, his recruiting, his ability to hire assistants, it doesn't matter what he didn't do well. All that matters is that SOMETHING was working that provided a consistent end result of winning. I don't understand why some people find reasons not to trust outcomes but prefer to dream big instead about non-proven coaches.
Acknowledged those two losses were bad ones and can’t be excused but you have to look at the wins too. IU’s best win on Kenpom is #68 South Carolina followed Providence at #79. Butler’s two best wins are both ranked better than IU (52) in Mississippi State (30) and SMU (50).
Again, how would Matta do with a team as talented as IU’s?

They're 20 spots behind us in KenPom. This isn't Thad Matta from 15 years ago and I aspire to be better than where he'd have us, even if it is better than where we'd be with Woody. The fascination with retreads who are past their prime is puzzling to me.
Better to take the assistant defensive guru that made Collins relevant and see if Buie can come back. Without him and Boo, Collins hasn't done shit.

There are a lot of coaches out there that would be better than Woodson. And there are a number of high profile, established, names that if IU were to get them, it'd likely put us in a better spot, immediately, versus where we're at today. Matta, Beard, Pearl, May...but there's an entire college basketball coaching eco system out there...Matta seems like a "typical IU hire" since RMK. I think we could do "better". And that statement comes from me less than a year after I listed him as my number 1 most coveted "realistic" candidate. He just doesn't appear to be trending upwards much right now.
It'd be incredibly disappointing, to me, if we found out in May or June next year that Dolson had zeroed in on someone like Matta, without fully vetting out the McCollum guy, the other top level D2 guy someone linked an article about, and anyone else like those guys.
Otzelberger is my clear cut top guy, at this point. But I'd love it if Dolson were to fully vet guys like McCollom, Crutchfield, Devries, etc...

Every hire has some level of risk for downside and potential for upside. Except bigfoot. He knows what worked in the nba 20 years ago.
I'm sure he will when it comes to that. He knows what he's doing. IF he's allowed to do it. That's the question.
