I guess now the people who were claiming DD was in over his head and the sky was falling,will calm down a bit.

Agree. Just need a rim protecting big or two. Then fill in with some younger development guys.

I love Tayton Conerway's game and his fit within the IU roster and DeVries' system.
Didn’t start in the Sun Belt and struggled against the 4 major teams he played against. I’m putting my trust in the coach but I’m not all giddy about this guy.
Didn't start? He started all 34 games and was the Sun Belt player of the year. What are you even talking about?
Yes, IMO we need 2 bigs who can rebound, defend the paint, move well, screen and roll, dunk lobs, and pass reasonably well. Perimeter shooting is a bonus at this point.
I believe he meant that Conerway didn't start his career in the Sun Belt. Could be wrong.
More frontcourt than a player or 2 please! Watching Florida and Houston along with UConn the last couple of years, they had solid depth at every position. The Davidson kid is a likely starter in the frontcourt and still allow us to play 4 out, so that's a luxury but I'd like to see 2 more and preferably 3 that can come in and occupy some minutes and paint protect and rebound. I know he's paying attention to it, but staggering them in classes is important too ultimately so he can build and carry a culture forward. Might be difficult in year 1, but that's where I think CDD wants to go.
It was fun watching UF and Houston bigs battle on the glass and they were ferocious. We've not had anyone for a long while that battled like that. I think TJD and Ballo had the tools, but I don't think were coached to be relentless on the glass like that. Reminded me of the good Izzo teams.
He did pretty well actually and when he played p4 teams he was the focus of defenders. Hes a defense first guard too. He will have other guys to help keep defenders more honest. He took a ton of shots at the end of shot clock. Dude is a Dude. Perfect fit.
With him at the 5 it will be 5 out. He has the handles for it. He will force people out of drop coverage too.

I think when he can guard the other teams 5, that's what we'll see, but thinking about teams like FL and Houston, UM this past year and likely Purdue this year, we're probably going to need a bigger frontcourt than Bailey and DeVries, so I think we'll play another big with Bailey often.
I have some overriding factors with Vanna. She's a Carolina girl.

There are less and less teams with traditional bigs and you can exploit them more and more on the offensive end. It becomes a 3 for a 2 scenario. I’d rather have a skilled big than a Purdue like stiff. So if we had to choose I’m going with guys like Florida had. Yes I know Florida had a big that was a rim protector type.
We don't need Goode. He provided little last year. IU can get a better player in portal. Like the Oregon St. guy Lucas L. 6-7 shooting F/G 40+% 3 pt. shooter. I'd hope for Overton TT, Elyjah Freeman 6-8, Duke Brennan 6-10 Grand Canyon , Moustapha Thiam 7-1,3 years elgibility, Enoch Boayke 6-10 , And a guy like Nyk Lewis PG hs. I like Dylan Darling a PG from Idaho St. but I don't see that happening after Conerway get. Might be a few nice ones who haven't entered portal as of yet too.

Yes as long as he's a rim protector that can defend down low and hit hooks or close range shots.
exactly. I saw him a couple times and he forced shots without O being set up in rebounding positions as soon as they got down the floor. Never impressed me.
Good summary. And if all this happened... I'd have to allow myself some absurdly unrealistic expectations.

And I think Nyk Lewis would be a great answer for a 3rd lead guard guy...
Freeman would be a luxury add...would have to guess it'd be unlikely though if we did add someone like Overton...and I would say a similar thing about Overton if Freeman were to commit first. The wing stable starts to get a little crowded with Wilkerson and DeVries both being focal point, 30mpg type guys. Adding either of Overton or Freeman, both also focal point, high minutes guys... makes signing both difficult, I'd bet.
Only other reason to keep him would be legacy. Indiana kid who fans appreciate. I get it though. We also don’t know the behind the scenes stuff that could’ve happened.
It also depends on the lateral quickness of the guards and their ability to prevent dribble penetration. An opposing coach in the Sun Belt has said that Conerway has great North-South speed, but his lateral quickness is average at best. Lamar and Tucker don't seem to excel in that area either. As a result, we will often need a rim protector at the 5, depending on the guards we're facing.
Who are the 7? I am counting 6, who I am missing? Sisley, Enright, Bailey, Conerway, DeVries, and Wilkerson.
The problem is bigs who can defend and shoot are hard to find and going to be in tremendous demand. Maybe we have 1 in Bailey, I don't know. I think this year it's likely we'll have to live with who's in the portal and may not get a roster to fit CDD's ultimate desire. But, he seems to have done a good job of getting the types of players he wants so far and I would think rim protecting bigs are probably still available. I'll be anxious to see who he signs for the frontcourt. To me, it's who you can defend that defines your position. But even if Bailey can defend a 5, matching up with PU for instance, is a tall order if you're asking DeVries to defend TKR. I still think it's more likely that would be Bailey and we'll get another 5 to defend their new big man.
Definitely need some more depth with our bigs. And having a more defense, rebounding, athleticism oriented guy makes a ton of sense...Purdue matchup or otherwise.
TKR and Cluff will be a problem....but in many ways, they're redundant with each other. Smith won't have two basketballs to pass to both of them, as an example...and neither of them are great passers. Teams that are properly schooled on rotations, switching, help and recovering, won't have as much trouble guarding those 2 as it might seem.
We beat Purdue's ass with a mediocre overall defense, and really poor overall offense. And main reason why that happened, will still be very exploitable...Smith, Loyer, Cox, Harris, etc... can be taken advantage of, on both ends of the floor. We might not do it...there have been a game or two in recent years where we haven't...but we sure have more than once. Very possible Conerway, Wilkerson, DeVries, and whoever else CDD gets, will be able to as well.
Goode. 44%, 6th best, on 5.5 attempts a game from three in Big Ten play.
That's elite role player good.
His Defense, not so great, that's well known. Probably exasperated playing with 3-4 other minus defenders though.
Saying you shouldn't shoot open court transition threes because IU had guys jogging up court on offense and weren't positioned to rebound is 100% against modern basketball.
I disagree with your three point shooting philosophy.
