Everyone agrees that Nate Sudfeld is a mature, upstanding guy who also has some serious skills as a quarterback. The shame about him is that he is going into his final year of eligibility after just four years. At other programs, the best players aren't necessarily pushed onto the field as true freshmen, but Nate was. It wasn't his fault and certainly wasn't the plan of the coaching staff heading into his freshman year, but the bottom line is once again IU has a quality player who got his clock started a bit earlier than may have been best.

Adam Replogle is another example of a guy who could have been extra special if he had a redshirt year, but he had to play. Instead, the lack of talent on the roster during Adam's freshman year pushed him into action, and it's a shame he didn't get more time to develop.

Players need time to develop, and until there is enough talent to allow guys to be redshirted instead of pushed into action right away, IU won't find consistency on the field. Nate's situation was by necessity when Tre Roberson was injured, but still, it would be nice for him to still have two years left.

I agree it would be great to have Sudfeld around another year, but Coach Wilson did talk at great length yesterday about how much the team's depth had improved during his time here. Last year they were able to redshirt around 10 guys that would have been in the two deep during his first two seasons here.

All three of Replogle brothers that attended Indiana saw action early on and weren't granted redshirt seasons, I think it says a lot about their level of maturity and football IQ. What is interesting in Adam's case was that the team had three freshman coming off a redshirt seasons in 2009 at defensive tackle, Larry Black Jr., Mick Mentzer, and Nicholas Sliger, so the team had plenty of fresh bodies to throw at the spot. Lynch apparently believed Replogle would make a difference at DT as a true freshman.

One player that was done a major disservice by not being redshirted was Kofi Hughes. At best he was the Hoosiers fifth option at wide receiver in 2010 behind Doss, Belcher, Turner, and Wilson. Talk about a waste, can you imagine how helpful he would have been last fall? Would have also allowed the team to leave Wynn in the slot.

On the other hand, had Wilson not hired Seth Littrell from Arizona in the wake of RichRod being named coach, resulting in U of A pulling NS's offer, Sudfeld doesn't get an IU offer and he never makes it to Bloomington. He wasn't likely to get an offer from another power conference school, so his talent wasn't universally regarded, and his up and down IU career validates that. In the end, he'll play a lot at IU and that will have been a good thing.

Lynch was coaching for his job in 2010. Consider that his recruiting base was still being established. Hep really only had 1 recruiting year. The next he was battling cancer and then Lynch had a 'Temp' tag put on him in 2007. So, Lynch's first year under contract was 2008 and his recruiting was getting better, as evidenced by that 2010 class. But by then, they were so thin they had to play anyone who could possibly help. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to overcome a dropped Belcher pass in the end zone.....
