Northwood fans get it twice, stuck with Chicago sports channel and then it still isnt on if we got Indy. Finals used to always be on 46 around here.

No he was a scholarship player. Recruited by Sampson. Believe it was Rick Majerus who called Roth the greatest high school shooter he’d ever seen.
I call Isaac Smith Fort Wayne Blackhawk's Matt Roth. There was a game earlier in the year where he rose up on the break and threw down a vicious dunk. I didn't realize he could get up there like that.

They don't have anything live on anymore now that the state is selling pay per view
Yeah, it's a shame. I always looked forward to watching the state finals on our local station every year. Then FOX Sports Midwest began broadcasting it, but no longer. Hell, I'm a DISHTV customer and FOX Sports Midwest and FOX Sports Central has been removed and the Chicago Sports Channel for the Cubs games has long since been removed as well (probably around 5 years now). I'm listening to the IHSAA 2A champiinship game on 93.3 Sports (Linton).

One player on Guerin Catholic has a last name that should look familiar. Bryson Cardinal is the son of former Boilermaker, Brian.

Matt Roth cutting down the Nets. It is going to be interesting to see how they develop talent in coming years. I have a good feeling about this Kellen Pickett.
I'm not sure if he still does, but prior to being named head coach at FWB, Roth was running a basketball training academy in Fort Wayne. Similar to what Ed Schilling did in Indy at the time he was named head coach at Park Tudor. Roth doesn't need to develop talent within his elementary schools and small communities the way coaches at other 1A and 2A schools. He just develops relationships with the best young players in the city of Ft. Wayne and surrounding metropolitan area and steers them to Blackhawk.

Don't delude yourself into thinking Matt Roth has the same challenges as the guys who coach at places like Linton or Southwood or Loogootee. He sits at the peak of an unlevel playing field.

Looked like Linton was going to run away with it like Lutheran did in the 1st game.
Yeah, I listened to the game and they went 2 for 15 in the 3rd quarter and just couldn't buy a hoop, but it sounded like FWB cranked it up defensively.

Linton has been really good for quite a few years. Living in Vigo County, I watched them dominate in the First Financial Bank Wabash Valley Classic in Terre Haute this year. The FFBWV tournament is a nice little much scaled down version of the huge one I remember before the days of consolidation. It's not even close to the excitement I remember from experiencing watching it as a kid when my Dad would take me in the late 50's to see the finals at the "then" old Indiana State Teachers College gym. With TH North, South and West Vigo stinking on ice annually, not much competition (other than Sullivan and Bloomfield) greeted Linton in that tournament. They had a very solid team with good size, athleticism and balanced scoring led by UCF bound Joey Hart. Too bad! I would've liked them to win it all.

One thing I do appreciate is Ft Wayne Blackhawk plays against higher class competition. They play against a lot of those bigger schools in the Fort.

This was Roth’s first year at Blackhawk. That’s some pretty fast “steering” of those elementary kids!

But not in the tourney. Unlike North Daviess they aren't willing to play up to a level that tests them. They only play up to 2A because they have to based on previous success. Otherwise you can be they would be back in 1A. I have no respect for a program that has the ability to pick and choose from among the second-largest city in the state being content to play against true small-community schools in the state tournament.

They also play larger schools in the regular season because many of the smaller schools in the area want nothing to do with them. They know how Blackhawk constructs its program. When Blackhawk opts to put on some big boy pants and play in that 4A sectional with the city schools get back to me about respecting them.

So…just so I’m clear…the SCHOOL picks what division they play in, not the IHSAA?

Are you sure about that?

Blackhawk Baptist Church was really smart to hire Kelly Byrd as the church pastor when Russel was about 7. And to hire the Davidson boys dad about 10 years ago. But the sneakiest move has to be getting Caleb and Josh Furst both to enroll as kindergarteners!!

These guys should be scouting for IU!!

Yup sneaky Blackhawk is at it again!!

He's been connected with Blackhawk for a few years. He was close to Marc Davidson, the previous coach ( might have even been on staff). He's just following Davidson's model. This isn't particularly about Roth for me, it's about the enormous advantage of urban or large suburban area private schools in the class sports system. Check the success history of these types of schools in the lower three classes in the class era compared to single-class days in all sports. It's especially troublesome that guys like Roth and Schilling can recruit from their basketball academies to stock their high school teams.

If they want to play "up", absolutely true. Any school can choose to play in any class above its own assignment in any sport. They can't play lower, obviously. And they can pick which sports they wish to play in higher classes without impacting their other teams. The success factor that moves a school up is also "sport-specific"

Those academies aren't working exclusively with elementary kids. They work with all ages, including college students. Schilling got in trouble at Park Tudor because some of his high school players at the academy were scrimmaging with college players and even a couple of guys from the Pacers. Trevon Bluitt and the kid from Martinsville ( Troy something - name escapes me now) trained with Schilling and both left their community schools after the 8th grade to go to Park Tudor.

IIRC Roth was "Creaned". He had another year of eligibility and wanted to come back but TC wanted the scholarship for a new player. Roth was certainly our best ( and maybe our only) shooter and we sure as hell could have used him the next season. Just one more example of Crean not knowing what the hell he was doing.
