Is there already a decent thread for this topic? I just started going down this rabbit hole with my daughter. We’re collecting basketball and football cards together. At this point just ripping new boxes. I use them as incentives for her effort plays or hard hits in softball games and batting practice. It’s been a great father/daughter activity.

So who else is collecting? I did make perhaps an impulsive purchase yesterday without my kid present. I bought a 2022 Panini Flawless NFL case (2 boxes). I gotta admit it was fun opening in the store and getting their opinions.

I got out before the grading services came on board, but I had the making of a pretty massive collection into the early 90's. Much of my hobbies took a back seat to coaching in short order. I also have my uncle's collection, which goes back to the late 50's. There are some gems I've kept in sheets. They've been in my garage since 1999. I check on them about once a year.

You are so funny. My daughter would love ripping boxes searching too lol. You definitely have a personality trait eppy

I'm sure the natural moisture from a garage is good for those values

Eppy always hits us with that nostalgia. I have fond memories of ripping Donrus, Topps and Upper Deck (when UD was the premium brand) with my dad in the late 80s, early 90s (Griffey rookie anyone?).

I have a decent sized collection, and got back into it for a moment around the Lebron rookie days (have one or two of his rookie cards), but couldn't sustain the interest, partially because of how expensive I remember the cards becoming.

I think it's a great idea, particularly if you are using it as bonding time and not looking at it as an investment.

My daughter couldn’t care less about sports. But if she thought there was a money gambling angle she would be all in. She LOVES scratch offs

Yes! So does mine.

I don't buy them at all, but my wife will every now and then. She has taught my daughter to not even scratch the ticket but to just scratch the barcode and then scan it with the app.

Just more laziness from the youth of America.

If they are valuable you should look into getting them graded. It's a little pricey, but worth it in the end. I linked the website to Indy Card Exchange (located on 96th street). The owner's name is Andy and he is a great guy. He won't lead you astray.

When the time comes, I'll get a couple of them graded to pay for the lot.

I'm still trying to get rid of Longerburger baskets and Boyd's Bears my mother left behind.

I've a pretty large bunch of baseball cards (thousands of those I thought would be valuable some day in sleeves and several unopened sets) from 1986 through 1993 or so. I checked out you link and they're all squarely in the middle of the baseball cards they have no interest in buying! That's not encouraging. ;) When I started collecting them it was very popular to do so and I suspect there a way too many of them out there in pristine condition for mine to be worth very much. Maybe in 30 more years . . .

Oh see I like looking at each one. I like the ones like BINGO that take a really long time to do.

Hardly any collectibles, antiques, etc are worth much these days. I remember my grandmother going through her china and glassware telling us how valuable everything was. We had quite a bit of antique furniture in good shape and again not much value. I don’t think young people are interested in collecting much or antiques.

Although I do have a friend who buys and sells old dolls. Guess there is still a market for them

I miss the gum packs

bring 'em back

I don't see the point in it.

I'm not a big gambler, but when I do, I'll go with my cousins and go to the casino and bet on the horse races down in Anderson. Can take $100 and it'll last all night and will generally win more then I take.

Over the summer I bought some lady soccer world cup cards for me and our daughter to open (she's super into soccer and the USWNT and hasn't ever had the rush that comes with opening multiple packs from a store box). We had a blast and traded cards back n forth. It wasn't quite the same as blasting through an '84 Donruss box of wax packs but it was a good day for sure....

Oh God, here we go.

LOL. Only this board could find some way to ruin what was simply an opportunity for me to act like a kid again (even if only for an hour or two) and for my daughter to experience the joys of collecting/trading cards for the first time... Geesh.

They are just teasing about the soccer thing. Some people here have strong feelings, both pro and anti.

So true. We have various collectibles, kids don’t want them. Only market seems to be people our age.

With electronic ticketing on our phones, you can’t even collect tickets for big events. If the government really wanted to help the middle class, let us have souvenir tickets.

It's a running joke about woman's soccer.

Im glad you and your daughter enjoy collecting together.

I collected in the late eighties - early nineties, which is the exact time you didn't want to collect cards.
It would be cheaper to wipe my ass with those cards than to buy toilet paper now. If anyone needs to wipe their ass with a Mark Grace or a Rick Sutcliffe card I am your guy.......for the card, not to wipe your ass.

they're giving you shit because i hate the uswnt. good stuff with you and your daughter. i have many friends who hate the uswnt and their daughters love them so bite their tongues. awesome you guys have stuff to do and like together. as for blowing through boxes of cards i was watching the jake paul documentary on netflix (i think that's what it was) and he some guy were doing the same thing. blasting through boxes but that were super expensive trying to find a rare card. i guess once you rip the box open its value decreases. it's weird how much stuff is out there that people can make money on. or in my case lose

I was just watching something with Jake Paul on it.. Golding something or other, can't remember what it was called. Looking for a million dollar LeBron James basketball card that didn't look like it had LeBron on it.

This nearly brings me to tears. Had full sets 61-70, plus thousands of duplicates - Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Gibson, Musial, Koufax. I see the prices of these today and I shake my head. You just didn’t think that having a dozen ‘61 Mantles could one day be extremely valuable. Sold everything after college as I needed some bucks for some furniture for the first condo I bought. Sold them to an executive with the Reds. What I wouldn’t give to have them all back . . .

Had a lot of pre-61s through trades. Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams.

I’m going to beat my head against the wall, now.

And KC fines for any mention of s***** cards below. Blasphemy.

It’s impossible for me to have hate for Horan or Lavelle and a few others. We watch religiously because we love the game…cannot get enough really.

Kiddo is a 7th grader and had her last game of the season tonight for her school. Wish it never ended. Love watching those young ladies play and improve!!!
