Game is on ESPN+

IU is the "home" team. Season is over with for the loser of the game and the winner will face the Vols tonight.

RHP Brayden Risedorph will be on the mound for IU and he has an ERA of 7.52 in 46.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.65 with an OBA of .268. Evidently, Taylor was removed in the Vols game because of his left shoulder since he is back at DH again, with Colopy in LF. Mathison has moved back to CF after being the DH in the Vols game. The batting order is the same as it was against the Vols with Taylor, Pyne and Mitchell at the top of the order, Tibbitts, Cerny and Mathison in the middle of the order, and Oliver, Stadler and Colopy at the bottom of the order.

RHP Colby Allen will be on the mound of USM with an ERA of 3.86 in 58.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.27 with an OBA of .250. He was used mostly as a reliever for the Golden Eagles.

USM has used just three pitchers in their first two games of the regional, so they have a well-rested bullpen.

1st inning:

T1st:

Risedorph walked the leadoff hitter on a full count. IU walked 9 batters in the Vols game in the first four innings.

A double that went into the corner scored the walk to give USM a quick 1-0 lead.

A single scored the runner from 2nd with no outs. Risedorph then went full on the next batter but got a K for the first out.

A pop up to 2B got the 2nd out with the runner still at 1st. Risedorph then walked another batter on a full count and he was over 33 pitches at this point which is something IU certainly didn't need if they survive this game. There were runners a 1st and 2nd and two outs.

Risedorph then went full on the next batter before giving up a double to make it 3-0 with runners at 2nd and 3rd and two outs. Tonghini started warming up in the bullpen.

Risedorph then hit a batter to load the bases. A base hit scored two more runs with runners at 1st and 2nd and USM had had batted around and Risedorph was at 50 pitches in the first inning.

Risedorph went full on the next batter but he finally got the last out to retire the side.

B1st:

Taylor flied out on his 2nd pitch. Pyne tried a bunt on the first pitch to him and he was out for the 2nd out. Mitchell Kd as IU went down in order on just 8 pitches.

End of 1st: USM 5 IU 0

2nd inning:

T2nd:

RHP Julian Tonghini replaced Risedorph and he had an ERA of 5.11 in 34.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.67, and he faced the 2 thru 4 hitters.

Tonghini Kd the leadoff hitter. He gave up a standup double to the next batter.

Tonghini then got another K for two outs and a runner at 2nd.

Illinois was having a similar game against Indiana State and they are down 7-0 in the 4th in that game.

Tonghini then gave up a two-out walk on a full count to put runners at 1st and 2nd.

Tonghini got a K to retire the side with no damage done in the inning. Tonghini threw 23 pitches in the inning.

B2nd:

It was the middle of the order up with Tibbitts leading off. Tibbitts grounded out for the first out.

Cerny was hit by a pitch for IU's first base runner of the game and one out.

Mathison walked on four pitches to put runners at 1st and 2nd and one out, with Oliver up.

Oliver Kd for the 2nd out. Stadler grounded out to end the inning and IU stranded two runners while still looking for their first hit of the game.

End of 2nd: USM 5 IU 0

3rd inning:

T3rd:

Tonghini faced the bottom of the order. Tonghini Kd the leadoff hitter.

On a full count, Tonghini hit a batter to put a runner on with one out.

Tonghini then walked a batter on a full count and there were runners at 1st and 2nd and one out.

IU had walked four batters and hit two other batters and we were just one out into the 3rd inning.

The top of the order was up for USM. Tonghini then walked another batter on a full count to load the bases with one out.

Tonghini was pulled for RHP Aydan Decker-Petty with an ERA of 4.95 in 36.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.43.

A grounder went off D-P's glove with a run scored and the batter reaching on an infield hit. The bases were still loaded with one out.

On a full count, D-P gave up a two-run double and USM had matched the Vols start with IU down 9-0. There were runners at 2nd and 3rd and one out.

On another full count, D-P walked a batter to load the bases again with one out. We have had nothing but control issues since the Vols game.

A single made it 10-0 with the bases full and one out. Another single made it 11-0 with the situation still the same on the bases. A D-P finally ended another disastrous inning.

Outside of Rybarczyk who pitched extremely well against the Vols in the last three+ innings of that game, every pitcher we have put on the mound in the last two games have had control issue.

B3rd:

Colopy flied out, Taylor grounded out, Pyne got IU's first hit of the game with a single, and Mitchell Kd to end the inning, and IU hitting is matching IU's control issues with the pitchers.

End of 3rd: USM 11 IU 0

I guess we know what we are going to have to go hard after this off season!

4th inning:

T4th:

D-P faced the 9 thru 2 hitters and he walked the leadoff batter on a full count. He then walked the next batter on four pitches. A single scored another run to make it 12-0 with runners on the corners and no outs.

IU brought in LHP Brandon Keyster with an ERA of 5.51 in 16.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.04. A FC got the first out at 2nd with a run scoring to make it 13-0.

With runners on the corners and one out, a WP moved the runner to 2nd.

Keyster got a K for the 2nd out but then gave up a two-run double to make it 15-0 and we are still not out of the 4th.

A WP moved the lone runner on base to 3rd and two outs. A K retired the side.

B4th:

It was the middle of the order up with Tibbitts leading off. IU is at the backend of their bullpen while the Golden Eagles have most of their better pitcher available. With their game coming up this evening with the Vols, and the huge lead, they may start using the backend of their bullpen.

The starting pitcher is still in there and Tibbitts opened the inning with IU's 2nd hit of the game with a single. Cerny Kd for the 1st out. Mathison reached on a FC with Tibbitts out at 2nd.

Mathison hurt his leg on the play and Wiggins replaced him at 1st. Mathison career is probably over with at IU since he will get drafted and will probably move on.

Oliver Kd to end the inning and the leadoff single went for naught.

At the rate IU is hitting the ball or is not hitting the ball, USM may have another pitcher pitch a complete game for the 2nd game in a two.

End of 4th: USM 15 IU 0

Batting practice. It figures the season would end like this, the most disappointing baseball season, for me, in awhile. And I saw a post from Indiana baseball about playing are best ball now. Yeah, I don’t call losing 4 of ur last 5 games as playing well.

5th inning:

T5th:

Colopy moved to CF with Wiggins in LF. Keyster faced the 8 thru 1 hitters and he got the first two batters on flyouts. An infield hit off Keyster's shin(?) put a runner on with two outs.

Another single put runners on the corners with two outs. A groundout retired the side.

B5th:

It's the 8 thru 1 hitters up with Stadler leading off. Stadler walked on a full count.

Colopy grounded into a DP, and IU has had five base runners in the game with two hits (singles), two BBs, and a hit batter.

Taylor broke up the shutout with a no doubt solo homer to RF to make it 15-1 and two outs. Pyne popped up to SS to end the inning.

It really doesn't matter now, but the Golden Eagle starter is at 70 pitches through five innings.

End of 5th: USM 15 IU 1

6th inning:

T6th:

Keyster faced the middle of the order and put them down in order.

B6th:

It was the 3 thru 5 hitters up with Mitchell leading off. Mitchell grounded out and the USM pitcher had put in most innings of the season for him.

Tibbitts Kd and Cerny singled to put a runner on with two outs. Wiggins grounded out to end the inning.

End of 6th: USM 15 IU 1

7th inning:

T7th:

Keyster faced the bottom of the order and he got the leadoff hitter on a flyout. A hard-hit liner was caught by Keyster for the 2nd out. A groundout got the final out and Keyster put them down in order. After going through three pitchers, Keyster had finally settle things down on the mound.

B7th:

It was the bottom of the order up for IU with Oliver leading off and the starting pitcher for USM still on the mound. Oliver Kd to the leadoff. Stadler Ks and Colopy grounded out as IU went down in order to end the inning.

End of 7th: USM 15 IU 1

8th inning:

T8th:

Keyster faced the top of the order and he got the first two batters on a groundout and a flyout.

Back-to-back singles put runners a 1st and 2nd and two outs with Vogel warming up in the bullpen.

Keyster then loaded the bases on a full count walk. Keyster has had good control but he may be starting to run out of gas with two outs. A flyout retired the side. Vogel will probably pitch in the 9th to end the season.

B8th:

It was the top of the order up for IU and USM went to the bullpen for the first time to bring in RHP Cole Boswell with an ERA of 6.48 in 25.0 IP and a WHIP of 1.80.

Sefcik came in to pinch hit for Taylor and he grounded out for the first out. Pyne and Mitchell both grounded out to end the inning.

End of 8th: USM 15 IU 1

9th inning:

T9th:

In their last inning of the season, IU brought in RHP Jacob Vogel who has an ERA of 2.42 in 22.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.16, and he was one of the bright spots out of the bullpen this season.

Vogel faced the bottom of the order and Kd the side.

9th:

It's the middle of the order up with Tibbitts leading off and he popped up to 2B. Cerny doubled to put a runner in scoring position. Wiggins flied out as IU was down to their last out.

Oliver hit a line drive that went of the right fielder's glove and over the fence for a two-run homer. It's 15-3 which takes a very small amount of sting off the game. Schuyler ended the season with a fly out.

Final: Southern Miss 15 IU 3

Thanks. Providing updates in those last two games were absolutely brutal, but when you make the regionals, then you have to consider it a successful season, and a least we got one win out of it. Our pitching depth was expected to be good this season, but we just plain didn't have enough quality depth. Risedorph took a step back this season and Foley ended the season on a sour note, but he faced the No. 1 team in the country, although that still didn't excuse the control problems which were caused by him and not on the Vols. It was great that Boswell finished his long IU career in the fashion that he did, and his win forced him to have to propose.

What a crappy way to end the season and it was a combined lousy effort by both the pitchers and hitters, although Keyster and Vogel ended the game pitching well. The only thing we did well in this game was not have an error as both teams were errorless.

It's on to the portal watch which could affect our current roster, and also the draft which could and probably will impact the roster, and maybe some of the incoming recruits.

The Vols game and this one pretty much mirrored each other with all of the damage done in the early innings. Against the Vols, we gave up 12 runs in the first five innings and then they had goose eggs the rest of the way. In the game today, USM got all 15 of their runs in the first four innings, and then it was goose eggs over the last five innings for them. It could be that with both games pretty much over with, their hitters weren't as patient on the pitches like they were early in the game.

The B1G took their lumps today with the Illini pretty much having the same type of game we had in their loss to Indiana State, 13-2. The Huskers were trailing Florida, 7-4, in the top of the 5th, and they are the only B1G team left standing depending on the outcome of their game.

IU was outhit today 16-6 and they were 6 of 32 as a team for an average of .188, while USM was 6 of 42 for .381. Cerny was 2 for 3 today and scored a run, while Taylor and Oliver had a homer apiece with Taylor's homer being a solo shot while Oliver's was a two-run shot, and the homers accounted for the three runs. That was about it from the hitting standpoint.

USM had a huge advantage on us from a pitching standpoint having used just three pitchers over the previous two games, while IU was hoping that a struggling Risedorph could get us several innings of good pitching which didn't happen starting with the 1st inning. I'm not going to go into the stats since it's all moot now with the season over with. In the past two games, we did get a surprisingly good performance out of Rybarczyk over 3.1 IP against the Vols, and today, Keyster and Vogel combined to put goose eggs up to finish the game.

I have had it with Glant and it's time to move on from him. Since he became the pitching coach, it's pretty much been a roller coaster ride with the pitching staff, and I, as well as others, think we can do much better in that area with new blood. Here's hoping Mercer doesn't let loyalty get in the way.

It will be an interesting off season.

Nebraska has now given up 17 runs through seven innings against Florida, a team barely over .500. It shows how our conference fares against southern teams.
Nebraska scored five runs in the last two innings to make the score a little more respectable for them, but a 17-11 loss still doesn't go down very well for a team. What a day for the B1G - IU goes down 15-3, Illinois goes down 13-2, and now Nebraska going down 17-11, and it's off to next season.

Yes sad that no BiG team made a super regional.

Tennesse won the regional and So. Mississippi's fresh pitching staff didn't do them much good in a 12-3 loss. Tennessee did what they do best and that was clubbing homers. Of the Vols 10 hits on the game, half/five of their hits were homers.

Pretty much a microcosm of our season. Inconsistent and wildly wild pitching, along with an offense that sometimes decided not to show up at all.

It will be interesting to see what the off-season looks like, both from a roster perspective, a portal perspective, and also a coaching perspective.
I’m predicting not a single change on the coaching staff which will trigger a massive roster overhaul.

Making the regionals probably will mean no changes to the staff although despite the winning record, we as fans could see the warts that existed which made this team unpredictable, as well as some questionable coaching decisions.

I hope they treat the midweek opponents next season a little more seriously since we came close to not making the regional because of our Q4 record which certainly affected our RPI, and like it or not, the RPI plays a big part in the selection of the tournament field.

I don't want to rehash the schedule results since it's all history now, but an example of treating midweek opponents nonchalantly was on display in the Purdue Ft Wayne game at The Bart, a bad 9-6 home loss.

Mercer's game plan with the pitching in that game was to give much of the bullpen an inning or two, which was fine as long as our hitters were scoring runs - but they weren't. IU was down 4-0 in the 5th with Decker-Petty giving up a run and runners on with one out. Keyster came in and got out of D-Ps jam by striking out two straight batters to retire the side. Down 4-0 going into the top of the next inning, Mercer pulled Keyster despite his superb effort out the bullpen in the previous inning, and he put Whiteaker on the mound. Whiteaker proceeded to give up four earned runs in that inning with those runs being the difference in winning or losing that game. Our hitting came to life after that, but it was too late.

I was somewhat surprised that Risedorph was given the start, based on how he did against last week against Nebraska. Giving up five runs had to take a lot of life out of the offense.
