Homogeneity makes many things easier

This reminds me of a video clip a friend sent me a couple years ago.

I'm far too individualist oriented to ever buy into any racialist view of the world. I think many things that people chalk up to race are actually cultural -- including a lot of which this guy discusses in the video. But the video is funny because it's a debate between two diametric racialist views of social order. If we're going to create a racial pecking order in the US by things like income and education, we would have to put Asians at the top of it.

There is no racial pecking order, of course. The entire notion is ridiculous. In a free society and economy, people of any race can be marvelously successful, people of any race can be worthless bums. But, anyway....

It does, yes. But because there is so much overlap between race and culture, a lot of people confuse the two -- in ways both bad and good. But they'll often shy away from discussing these issues at all, for fear of saying something that might be construed as racial...and not just by other people.

I remember when the book "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" came out (the author, BTW, is the same Yale Law Professor who convinced JD Vance to write his book...and I think introduced him to his now wife), there was a lot of discussion about it. I didn't read it, but I did follow some of the discussion. And, having grown up with a number of Korean friends, it all sounded pretty familiar to me.

Their family dynamics were just different than mine. So much more structure and discipline. We put a lot more value on sports & leisure than they did. When my Korean friends weren't busy working on academics, they were working on computers or their musical instrument. And everything was regimented -- and I got a front row seat to it when I'd stay over at one of their houses. And that wasn't all that common, either -- because socialization was very different than it was with my white friends...and also my close friend who was black.

The key difference between my household and theirs wasn't racial, it was cultural. And I figured that out in grade school -- but there are grown-ass adults who can't make that distinction today.

Wrong. I think reading and studying the Bible for most of my 54 years gives me some knowledge of the text. God through direct communication with a very few and with revelation thru his son gives pretty good guidelines on how to live to please him. Belief in Jesus is the only way to eternal salvation, but by proclaiming Jesus as personal savior, we assume a lot of responsibilities on living the Christian life. I know McNutty thinks I’m a shit poster and decided to deride me endlessly during the election, but I was truly undecided until Trump started selling Bibles. When I finally came to terms with the fact that Trump IS the Republican Party, I proudly renounced my membership. I am far from a Democrat and waiting for a common sense platform to emerge

If you can switch alleigiances to a Party based on a person selling Bibles..... well, I just don't want to argue with someone like that. Are any restaurants thriving these days? I mean traditional sit down restaurants? Everything seems dead. Chains, locals, high end, mid tier, low end. There are exceptions in peak times, etc... But...

Everywhere you go, you basically just walk in and sit down in a 1/4 full dining area. I don't miss the days of waiting an hour for a table at the fkn TGIF. But borderline depressing going out to most restaurants these days.

I don't know. I'm not as looped in as I used to be. As far as I can tell, fast food is struggling with food costs, family casual is struggling with labor costs, and upscale is just struggling, because upscale always struggles.

That's not what I've experienced. Steakhouses are struggling some, but some of the high end, exotic culinary restaurants are always booked. Even some of our local places are packed relatively frequently.

I can say Scottsdale was the same last month (will change soon b/c of season) and Clayton, MO seemed to be hopping, even without @mcmurtry66

I should add that third party delivery (and COVID) has changed the industry to the point where a staggering percentage of sales for many places - often 25-40% - are online delivery orders. So an empty dining room doesn't mean the kitchen isn't busy.

Maybe just a lot of tired concepts in several major city burbs I've been in lately.

Scottsdale isn't really a relevant comp through. That's all just seasonal affluent.

My wife is asian. A couple years ago at our sports banquet the coach said tommy is your mom a tiger mom? He said huh we laughed hard but he was clueless about it.
