@mcmurtry66 Do you remember this game? I had it DVR'd and watched it that night when I got home from work. I distinctly remember Wenger trying to play with Barca the whole time--not just sit and defend. Game could have gone really bad early for Arsenal, but they hung in there. I remember thinking at the time that "this is the most sophisticated tactically and technically brilliant match I have seen. Loaded with amazing players.
1. Wilshere when he was healthy was really frigging good. Nasiri and Fabregas were too.
2. There is only one midfielder in the game now that could fit into this Barca team--Rodri. That's it.
3. 2011 Messi was so fun. Already smarter than everyone else.
4. It was a 2-1 game and it was ELECTRIC. A 2-1 game now is a bunch of centerbacks passing the ball back and forth and to the outside backs and playing outside in. Boring.
This was the pinnacle. Arsenal was wonderful. They were Barca lite. Played beautifully. 2010-2014 was as good as it will ever be. Messi was the greatest the world had ever seen and help Spain didn’t even need him. The core Barca players in euros for Spain were magic.
Dani alves was insanely good for Barca too. You think of what a FULLback is like and he was warming up juggling with Messi before every game. Only they were 40 yards apart 🤣
Ok, so I haven’t watched this documentary but regardless the 1986 World Cup in Mexico City probably meant the most to me. I was 12 and probably the first time I had my eyes glued to the tv for every game broadcast on NBC. We didn’t have cable back then so I don’t know if every game was available but when they were on It was must see TV.
1) This was the Maradona “Hand of God” World Cup, Argentina vs England.
2) I recall the Argentina vs West Germany final being exciting.
3)I remember the Brazi vs France game going to PK’s. France won but damn you wanted that game to never end. (Platinum, Zico, Julio Caesar)
I also recorded every game on VHS and replayed them over and over. The only sporting event I’ve watched more on VHS was the 1984 IU vs North Carolina upset (Jordan vs Dakich and Alford). I’ve watched that game so many times I can practically recall every play. I can recite Billy Packers comments, when a player would clap his hands, I remember the most random things from that game. Enough of my childhood memories.

Now they aren’t even botched clearances. I’d venture most goals are a product of bad give aways out of the back as everyone it seems tries to play out of the back. Even in shitty mls. And they do it with donkeys. As MM said soccer right now is not appealing

For those of you who have watched European football much longer than me, how does Yamal rank in his ability to bend the ball for goals? I can’t get enough of his move to left outside of the box and bending those into the far post.

there have been a number of guys. messi could do it like crazy. for me. the greatest i've ever seen was that window in messi's prime where it seemed like half of his goals were a 3 foot high chip over the gk from 2 feet away from the gk. he was just beating defenders and getting all the way to the keeper over and over again.
yamal is simply incredible. the difference between messi and anyone i've ever watched was stated perfectly by pep when he was asked who is the greatest ever and he said messi. he's the greatest 6, the greatest 7, the greatest 8, the greatest 9, the greatest 10. that ability i've never seen from anyone else. he's pirlo and xavi and iniesta and ronaldo
