All we hear is how size depleted we are right now especially with the injury to HMP.......one of my favorite coach Knight lines is "You can't teach height", my question is this...... After watching Purdue tonight I see a lot of "mid range" talent and a TON of talented but not aggressive height. They seem to have more pieces in place than IU does, is it a coaching issue for them?

My opinion on the Boilers is that....

they will be a very good team next season. They should be hoping to see flashes of great play this season, then consistency next season. Purdue is a team that I don't think we match up well with and wouldn't be surprised if they rolled us at Mackey. I hope I'm wrong because I think if we can beat Maryland and go 1-1 vs OSU/Purdue... we're in the catbird seat. If we go 0-3, everything could begin to unravel.

I agree nearly wholeheartedly with your assessment.

Their weakness is youth and guard play this year. With both big guys coming back next year and Edwards, Stephens and Davis at the wing and SG positions, they should be very good everywhere but the 1 spot. And, mostly bc I just don't follow Purdue that much I can't recall if Octeus is just a one yr transfer or like a Zeisloft 2 yr guy. If Octeus is gone, they'll still have a sore spot at that PG position which will limit their success. If he returns or somehow they shore that spot up I could see them as a top 3 team in the league next year.

I don't like Purdue, but I'm not such a homer that I won't give credit where it's due. Painter has assembled a pretty nice team that could go on a run next year. But, the real question for them is can Painter put multiple good classes together. He's been unable to do that in his time there and as a result has suffered very poor seasons every few years. The class of Etwaan, Hummel, etc was great but when they left they had $ hit.

All in all, I'm a big Painter supporter. He'll give them something to cheer about(top 3-4 finish) every handful of years but mostly will never recruit well or consistent enough to make much noise. CMP is like Peter in the movie 'Office Space'. He does just enough to not get fired. It's a perfect fit.

Did Hammons not start last night? If not was there a reason given?

Hayes didn't do much offensively. Also, a poster said below that both bigs will be back next year. Isn't it a big possibility he will go NBA?

Painter=Joe Tiller

I've predicted for a while that Painter would follow the Joe Tiller model at Purdue: Get a lucky break early in your tenure, have some great unexpected success, create big expectations among PU fans, then fall back down to earth, watch attendance dwindle, alienate those same fans, and eventually leave W Laf a pretty unpopular guy. Tiller lucked into Drew Brees b/c nobody else wanted him. Painter lucked into the class of 2007 and hasn't done much since. The only difference in these 2 guys is that Tiller retired while Painter will eventually be forced out (maybe a year from now).

And I'm not sure both big guys return next year. Hammons is 23 already and might be ready to leave college.

How did they get Haas?

I don't follow Purdue whatsoever. I did watch the last 15 minutes because I love to see them lose.

It looks like Haas will be quite good in a couple years. Obviously, we never recruited him ... and it ticks me off that we can't get decent 7-footers for a four year stint.

Re: How did they get Haas?

I agree Haas is going to be a good one. Certainly much better than the 7 foot stiff from Iowa.

Re: How did they get Haas?

I believe he pretty much fell into their lap. If I recall correctly they'd recruited him, but he picked Wake Forest. Then with the coaching change at Wake, he reopened and picked the Boilers.

Hammons and Octeus are gone next year.

No reason for Hammons to stick around....if he wants to get paid to play basketball.

Point guard will be a huge hole. Thompson is a nice player, but he is not a B10 starting point guard.

Stephens, Edwards, and Haas is a nice core...but they need more talent.

Scott and Smotherman are playing behind a very un-athletic Mathias.... which if I am a Purdue fan... I would be very concerned about transferring...

Davis is a solid backup at best in the B10.

If Hammons leaves and Octeus gone, and if Scott and someone else transfers.... Purdue will basically be right back where they are right now...

He may live to rue that affinity for Black and Gold.

He also had an offer from Wichita State who are B&G. But he must not be into winning ... or didn't think the coach would be around long.

Also an offer from Virginia. Maybe they weren't interested or full after the WF coaching change.

right now replacing Octeus is the biggest issue

for Purdue. He has been a Godsend. Thank you Ed Schilling jr. for sending him to Purdue. STephens broke his finger ...teh one he dislocated before....wasn't taped I don't think. Bringing Cline in gives them another shooter...but they must get a replacement for Octeus...
