Senior Trump administrator pens anonymous op ed to NYT

I suppose Jesus was technically Jewish too

Shhh...

I wonder what the motivation is -- what outcome does this senior administration official seek to produce? It's risky copping to a soft coup in the New York Times -- even if you do it anonymously. Even if people don't actually know who did it, they'll think they do. And the blowback will likely be huge.

Someone had what they thought was a damn good reason to do this. What was it?
There's the Jared Kushner Theory:

After all, rarely a month has passed during the reign of The Donald without a story leaking about his son-in-law and daughter laboring to curb the excesses of President Daddy. Key themes of the unamed “senior official” in the New York Times — that President Trump is bonkers, and thank heavens for the good guys inside the administration — fit neatly into the same narrative.

The Jared Theory also answers a question so many have asked since the op-ed was published on Wednesday: Why doesn’t this self-styled patriot resign? There’s no leaving for Jared Kushner. As the saying goes: You marry The One, you marry the family. The only clean break from his dilemma is to wake up from a nightmare in June 2015. In that case, he could trip a circuit breaker at Trump Tower and disable the golden escalator on which Trump commenced his historic descent.

And the theory addresses the venerable standard: Cui bono? Who stands to benefit when Anonymous is eventually unmasked, as surely the author will be in the city that keeps no secrets? A dramatic “Aha!” could serve as the perfect cliffhanger from which to launch a new season of the Trump family reality show. In this one, Jared and Ivanka return to New York and resume their climb to the top of Manhattan society.

Having been so close two short years ago, now they’d have a hard time getting invited to the opening of a vape shop in Hell’s Kitchen. But errant sheep returning, shall we say, sheepishly to the fold is one of the great plotlines of literature and Page Six.

Also, the NYT has published responses to some queries on their vetting process.

We’ve certainly read excellent news stories that quoted anonymous officials making similar points and criticizing the president’s temperament and chaotic style. What distinguished this essay from those news articles was that it conveyed this point of view in a fleshed-out, personal way, and we felt strongly that the public should have a chance to evaluate it for themselves.

The only way that could happen was for us to publish the essay without a byline. That was an extraordinary step for us, but the piece touched off what we believe to be an important national debate about whether the writer, and similarly situated Trump administration officials, are making the right choice (many of our readers clearly think they are not).

You know you got under Trump's skin when you publish an anonymous op-ed in the NYT and:
  1. Trump freaks out;
  2. Trump assumes there is some resister in his Administration, therefore;
  3. Trump implicitly admits the NYT is a legitimate source of information, and;
  4. Trump implicitly admits it's not Fake News;
  5. Trump freaks out some more;
  6. Trump still hasn't found the author of the op-ed 11 days latter, despite a massive manhunt;
  7. Trump continues to freak out.
Yup, I'd say said resister/op-ed writer gets an A+ for effort and an A+ for trolling the bejesus out of Trump. Not too easy to put Trump on your puppet strings and make him dance around like clown he is.

My first thought originally was it's least likely one of the military guys but my greatest hope was that it was.

If one asks, what grave danger could Trump pose, the only answer I see is military. Who is really positioned to understand that danger? Someone very high up in the military.

Published some time Thursday, landed on Trump's desk yet? Has Fox News mentioned it yet? If it's Mattis, he knew he'd get outed eventually so will he deny it to Trump? My hunch says no. He'll tell the truth. Can Trump handle that? I doubt it. If Mattis fesses up, he's got to be gone. Woe is us.

And how will this play out for the election? Will Mattis "tell all"? Will the Trump people want to clamp down on this till November 7th? Or will Trump want to fire up his base with his tough guy persona? I'd guess the last.

Or will Mattis deny all to all, sacrificing the truth for the good of the country?

Or did the op-ed writer do a masterful job of making this look like Mattis?

It is easy to steal a word or phrase to imitate someone. But an overall style is difficult. Not impossible.

If it is Mattis, that speaks volumes. He is not one thought to be lobbing grenades at superiors.

It’s Kellyanne Conway’s husband!

Those strings are reserved for Putin.

Good luck with that ticket.
Thanks! ;) Mattis may be one of the best SecDefs we've ever had. He oozes competence. People I know at DoD can't sing his praises enough. I also like Haley, but I'd go with Rubio, Sasse or several other people as the VP too. If you Democrats could get Mattis to run as a Democrat I'm all in. I think he's relatively moderate, but he's probably way to moderate to conservative for the Democrats to go for that.

Mattis is pragmatic. Liberal ideologues would never vote for that. :cool:
