I’m not exactly sure why people are celebrating this. Jones is an entertainment artist. He believes less than half of what he says.

Nah. He and his lawyers just kept giving a middle finger to the court. That usually doesn’t work out to well. This isn’t congress after all. The judge has power.

Jeez, don't you know the history of "free speech"? The First Amendment never applied to anything but acts of Congress. It never stood for the notion that you had freedom to lie. Libel/slander/obscenity laws etc. always restricted it.

If you read the link above, it looks like Jones' lawyers are using the Trump tactic of not providing any requested testimony or documents whatsoever and daring the other guy to do something about it. The link says Jones' behavior went on for years.

Now, let's hope Jones has assets readily available to pay this judgment when it is finally entered.
 
Following through on a promise to Bulk, it is ridiculous to imply all leftists are in favor of repressing free speech or that no one on the right is in favor of this.

It is also ridiculous to imply the right wing universally defends awful behavior for their own or that there aren't those on the left who do the same.

Moving on from "my side good, your side bad," free speech principles in the U.S. have NEVER covered defamation. (Defamation cases predate and postdate our Constitution).

As for Jones's "belief" that he's telling the truth, why would you think that makes it better? The 14th Amendment brings the First Amendment to state and local government and other state actors.

New York Times v Sullivan and it’s progeny protects lying about public people and issues so long as you aren’t mean about it.

Only Democrats have formally called for a change to the first amendment in a way to restrict speech.

The practical application of speech restrictions throughout government, academia, and business through employment discipline and other restrictions on individuals comes almost exclusively from the left.

On the other hand, many on the right do not believe that protests and marches that block free movement without permits to do so, that block access to businesses, that intimidate people minding their own business, that are specifically intended to disturb and intimidate people while in their homes should be tolerated as freedom of expression. In other words, the right knows that reasonable time and place restrictions on speech are inherent in freedom of expression and should be enforced.

I’ll take the right view of freedom of expression.

Free speech? I was actually going to start a thread on Jones figuring it would be something we could all agree on, aside from politics. But I see I was mistaken...

Jones Defamed these families, who were already suffering. On top of that he continued to fabricate absolute nonsense that some of his stupidest followers apparently believed, and this made the suffering of these families even worse than what was already unimaginable...

I keep up fairly well on current events, but I'd be hard pressed to name one of the families from Sandy Hook. Yet one of these families has been forced to move 7 times in response to threats that the Jones' disciples have inundated them with. Some of the abuses Jones is responsible for are discussed in this video...

Nonsense. Comparing the allowances, for lack of a better term, as to time and place restrictions during the summer of love to antilockdown protests (I didn't even know they exist) is a night and day difference. The political bent of those governing the cities spoke to the response to the assemblies as they relate to time and place.

The difference in liberal allowances for the summer of love protests/riots is unmatched, and certainly not of the same quality and quantity as anything we've seen from the right. What he wrote re time and place restrictions as it relates to political bent is accurate. We have an entire summer of support for same.
