Russia-Ukraine war has begun

At this point, the smart move for Putin would be to say "OK, we've accomplished all our goals of the Special Military Operation" and from now on, we'll only protect those areas we've annexed into Russia to protect that Russian population. No more offensive operations. We accept a 100% cease fire."

You know Trump would agree to this and put Ukraine in a bad position.

I can't see a downside for Putin in this and he would be popular at home (well, except for the families of the almost 1 million casualties)
Agreed. Putin seems convinced he can win. He could resort to a limited (even just one) nuke attack. Shock and awe. How would the West and Ukraine react?

He could even fire off one nuke and deny it. He doesn’t really care. Especially if Ukraine hits Moscow or St. Pete.

You could draw a parallel between the American colonies fighting for independence from Great Britain and Ukraine fighting their war for independence from Russia today.
Not really ...

The US fought for independence from a King for unfair economic policies. Ukraine is fighting for their freedom against an invading army, they were already independent.

There's a huge difference.

First of all, if he were to fired off a nuke, everyone would know where it came from - those things are tracked. He couldn't deny it. He's not going to do it anyway.

Secondly, he may appear to be convinced he can win, but he's not. It's all bluff, just like using his nukes is a bluff.

That's what he does - misinformation. After over 3 years, it's clear he's blustering. His best bet for Russia and him, personally, is to declare victory, go on the defensive in the 3 Ukrainian oblasks they mostly hold, and hope Trump puts the pressure on Ukraine to accept it.

Of course the world would know, just as we know, he assassinated all those people with his poisons around the world. That wouldn’t stop him from denying it.

He can deny it but it would have no effect when everyone knows the truth.

Reagan: Peace through strength.

Soviets walked away but came back when the US showed strength.

Trump is showing weakness.

I use Reagan standing up to the USSR all the time against the 'We can't negotiate with Russia unless we're nice to them" argument.

Russians and East Europeans are tough negotiators and will roll over you if they think you're weak. They respect only strenth and the willingness to use it.

I do like the fact Trump tries to establish personal relationships with these dictators, but I fear he thinks his friendship will get them to negotiate in a serious way.

It is what I do not get about the peace now argument, Ukraine is supposed to ignore all their murdered people and reward Russia for murdering them by giving Russia what Russia wants.
To say nothing of all the women and children they’ve kidnapped from the occupied zones. Where are they now? Are they alive? Are they enslaved? In Siberia?

Let’s talk about ethnic cleansing, shall we?

Devil’s advocate: There’s basically one difference between what Russia has done and what Israel has done in Gaza. Israel has a “justification.“
