Ronald Reagan On Tariffs

And Reagan was haaaaaaated by the leftists. Free markets and reduced regulation and freedom and self suffiency? What the heck is that?

So, Trump should be lauded by the liberals since he's opposite. The left here must love him. He's using Democrat policies from way back in foreign trade. Protect the unions.

I prefer Reagan's ideas by a mile. But Trump's point is our politicians, especially liberal ones, have been cowing to the rest of the world for so long in other ways that it's time to flex our muscle and get some fairer trade agreements written.

You want him to lose is what you mean. Alot of you are rooting for this to fail there is no doubt in my mind.
Like FVCK. I’m already losing on the stock market. I want him or Congress or whoever to STOP THIS INSANITY. Did you listen to Reagan? Trump thinks he’s doing something genius. No. It’s been done before and it failed.

Sort of.

Your beloved leader touts his deal-making prowess. So why is he swinging at the whole world like a piñata instead of striking sophisticated deals?

Civilization, the stock market, currencies and practically everything else is stable because of confidence. Our extremely modern and complicated world order is actually rather delicate. Take that for granted at your own peril. There’s absolutely no need for Trump, the magnificent dealmaker, to shock the world so drastically. If everything he says is true, then he wouldn’t need to bludgeon the world order, he could wield the power a la Teddy Roosevelt.

My leader? I think he's mostly an idiot. Swinging at the world? Not a big deal... lol He'll have some misses but some hits as well. Better than if we took the 'merica bad' leftist policy of bending over every time.

Democrats have made dumb things a matter of party policy. At least for this one Trump is 'Trump policy' not all Republican policy. And the Democrats had Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in charge. Are you kidding me? Trump isn't worse. Is he any good? No, he's below what we need. But he's still an improvement over the previous .

Sure, tariffs are bad in general. So are taxes at too high a level. We have both. We'll see how it works out. Tariffs give Trump a policy weapon. Many tariffs will be lifted as deals are struck. We'll see if they cut any spending though. Every government creature and businesses and lobbies will fight that, with every fiber of their being. It's tough.

What we’ll see is if the chickenshit Republicans in Congress have even a semblance of peaballs when it comes to controlling the tariffs.

He only protects himself, filling his and the rich boy's pockets.

While I agree with him on tariffs, his neoliberal policies lead to the hollowing out of the American manufacturing sector.

The seeds of the US’s manufacturing decline can be traced back to the Reagan years, as the president turned to the services industries to lead the country out of recession

Breaking up the US factory

The fracture and internationalisation of US manufacturing rapidly accelerated with the global financial crash of the 1980s. In the first part of that decade, President Ronald Reagan oversaw a period of deep recession in which industrial sectors were hit particularly hard. The US factory had begun to hollow out.

“Financial markets put enormous pressure on large companies to get rid of their [US] workers and plants and move away from being vertically integrated companies in which everything took place within the company itself.” says Berger.

Companies such as Texas Instruments, Alcoa and DuPont had been examples of this all-encompassing model that had been commonplace in US manufacturing before the 1980s financial crash hit.

That’s one theory. Labor is a huge cost. Management is always looking forward to lessen such a cost, which is why labor unions came to exist. Robotics, AI, and yes, cheap foreign labor.

I see Nixon going to China in 1972 as a seminal moment for what has happened since. Even more important was the development of MBA America, the engine of offshoring.

At least according to Trump, this whole tariff bait and switch has now been revealed to be a plan to shove China onto an economic island.

Proposed defense budget is going to top 1 trillion dollars. Massive military build up incoming.

Trump is always and forever a man of the 80’s. Reagan is probably smiling down at how Trump is following his Cold War playbook to a T.
