Are Trump's beautiful tariffs

Apple is in a mess of trouble. Yes they may will shift to India but it's going to take a very long time. Their supply chains are quite complex and are embedded in China.

Twenty -- if you have ever done work with India, it's a nightmare. The domestic politics are worse than in the US. The paperwork/processing is the ultimate test of patience.

The Union government can agree but then the state gov't can drag its feet for years till you give up. Then there's the corruption that you need to pay to smooth the process....

This is not to mention that local labour isnt great, nor is the power supply stable.

Friends of mine at various American & local Singaporean MNCs tell me that they still dont send their female staff to India if there is training there.

People are just making shite up.

I seem to be spending half my time debunking made up shit or educating folks here. Beijing should be paying me for this. I would be rich with all the counter-narrative and facts I am offering here.

There is a world outside the US. 95% of the world lives outside the US.

Unless you are telling me $3.2 trillion in cash reserves means one is short of cash reserves.

But they have been buying tonnes of gold the past few years in preparation for a trade war and decoupling. Besides, The US isnt even its largest trading partner. They shifted to the ASEAN trading bloc after Trump 1.0 taught them something.

Trump is severely underestimating the planning and depth of resolve in seeing this thing through. It doesn't plan in a 4-year cycle. Its a 5,000 year civilisation. Trump will barely register as a blip in its history.

And in case you are unaware -- both China and India have been the dominant global economic powers for the best part of 2,000 years, bar the last few hundred years, with the Brits and then the US the past 80-90 years.

They will play the long game. Besides, China's exports to the US today are about 12% of their total exports. That's about 2% of the total GDP.

Can’t wait until today when Herr Trump imposes a tariff on pharmaceuticals……definitely what Americans voted for— way more expensive drugs and higher insurance.

There is not one reasonable company that would remotely think that they would build a plant in the United States knowing full well that: (1) it is far too expensive to build and make money; and/or (2) they know the tariffs will be gone no later than 3 years and 200 and change days later.

DBM assures you this is all going perfectly.

So much for the most recent MAGA kook theory that this was all to push Treasury yields lower, in some 4d chess move to lower our interest costs.

What bullshit will they come up with next?
Why are people surprised about all this? Trump leverages other people’s livelihood for his own gain, with pretty much everything he does.

It’s a nice racket. Kind of like going to the casino with someone else’s money. When he wins, he gloats and demands the winnings for himself. Without any thought of repaying the original money. When he loses, just as often as he wins by the way, he moves on to his next shlup that he can bully or con in to giving him more money. And often ostrecizes the original source of the money in the process.

I hope the game he’s playing now works. I don’t want to go through what most of us will when it doesn’t. But I know Trump isn’t thinking about “us”.

It’s awesome that Fox News just figured out this would be a penalty on United States companies.

It will be another round of media interviews today with our treasury secretary, who will continue to look like he just had six hours of anal probes trying to defend an economic program that he knows is dog shit

Saw a WSJ headline about 529 plans. It’s something I’ve been thing a lot about as I am in the college paying time of my life. All this talk of just wait it out. It will eventually go up again. Well, when you have a kid in college, you could really get whacked if this shit drags on much longer.

That's what you get for hiring Soros' covfefe boy.

Wouldn't surprise me. Bessent is making it clear that they won't back down no matter what. The only question is, how long before Chy-na blinks?

Not sure. I think the main objective is to hurt China and box them in, so they can either blink or suffer. Jamie Dimon mentioned a couple times the need for reshoring for military purposes in his interview with Fox this morning and he came across surprisingly calm about the entire tariff situation. He also mention the importance of striking deals with our allies quickly. Bessent echoed a similar message as well.
