RIP Jimmy Carter

RIP Jimmuh.

Good Baptist.

Always thought (especially for a guy who graduated from the Naval Academy) he was an awful CIC.

From WIKI:

Carter pardoned all Vietnam War draft evaders on his second day in office. He created a national energy policy that included conservation, price control, and new technology. Carter successfully pursued the Camp David Accords, the Panama Canal Treaties, and the second round of Strategic Arms Limitation Talks. He also confronted stagflation. His administration established the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Education. He is the only president to serve a full term without appointing a justice to the Supreme Court. The end of his presidency was marked by the Iran hostage crisis, an energy crisis, the Three Mile Island accident, the Nicaraguan Revolution, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In response to the invasion, Carter escalated the Cold War by ending détente, imposing a grain embargo against the Soviets, enunciating the Carter Doctrine, and leading the multinational boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Carter defeated challenger Ted Kennedy in the 1980 Democratic Party presidential primaries but lost the general election in a landslide to Ronald Reagan, the Republican nominee."

Bad luck or bad policy?

Glad he beat Ted Kennedy - he needed a beating worse than most.

Man is a gem.

Funny story. I have a buddy who was a D1 swimmer. Heavy heavy drinker. Coach told him t you need to decide what you want. Swimming or alcohol. And he picked alcohol. Ballooned up. We went to the Kentucky derby and he showed up with adkins bread then proceeded to drink 30 bud heavies.

Anyway he and our whole crowd went to New Orleans for 2000. He literally flew down for 36 hours. No luggage. When he left for the airport he had a footprint on his back. No idea. 6,3 300 plus. But had the voice of a little girl. Funniest ****er I’ve ever met.

So we’re out and he goes you know my parents are down here helping Carter build houses for habitat. They asked me to come but I told them I had work. We laughed.

We were at the Sheraton. That night we came stumbling into the lobby absolutely trashed all full of hurricanes at 5 am and we all hear MICHAEL!!!! OH MY GOSH YOU CAME TO HELP!!! It was his parents heading out to build houses 🤣

It is ironic that doing things like carrying his own luggage off of Air Force One hurt his presidential image - but in the long run enhanced his image as a good man.

Doesn't count as C-Span is a failing network. Here's the link to the one you can trust-Fox News!

Apsa. Social science. Lol. Only people that stupid would think that of Biden. Supporting LGBTQxyz I’m sure gave him points to offset a border crisis etc. Total clowns removed from the real world. Biden is amongst the worst ever to those not lost in those goofy departments; I.e. normal people

Since I was born in 78, can I squeeze Carter onto the list? Technically during my lifetime.

I'd put him clearly below the top tier, but also clearly above the bottom tier. He was too often ineffectual, but he did accomplish a few important things. Mark's link gives a good rundown of the good and bad. And he gets huge credit from me for one of his last appointments: Paul Volcker. That alone did more good than anything Biden, Trump, or W accomplished.

These rankings are always garbage. Had Carter been a republican his place would soar. He was conservative in many spheres. He championed more deregulation than the conservatives that followed by way of one example

Time affects judgment. He was a fvcking disaster in regards to the economy and foreign policy. The rise of Islamic fanaticism occurred under him - see Iran, Afghanistan - consequences we are still dealing with today.

His approval ratings in comparison to many of his era were not good. He only won FOUR states in his bid for reelection.

That being said, he did things the right way in terms of how he handled himself and how active he was trying to do good post-Presidency.

Don't think you can judge a President based on what happens in the world or large economic movements during his years in office. They aren't gods.

Instead, you have to look at how they responded and what they did. Otherwise, you have to tag GWBush with 9/11 and the Great Recession, and FDR with the outbreak of WW 2. Makes no sense.

Re public approval. who cares?

This happens all of the time. You don’t think FDR’s attitudes and policies towards Japan impacted their decision to attack? His lack of desire for war enabled Hitler?

Gwb gets blamed all of the time for 9/11 (see Michael Moore) and the GRC.

There is no more objective measure than public support DURING a presidency. Winning four states as an incumbent is horrific.

All of the rest of the excuses are just noise.

Maybe not the best president, but I can't imagine ever having a better ex-president.
I think even his harshest critics would have to agree with that.

Let me put it this way: I have a great deal more respect for The Carter Center and the work it has done promoting and protecting free and fair elections worldwide than I do for the Clinton Foundation - or any other ex-president’s legacy/vanity organization.

On top of this important legacy, Jimmy Carter was a genuinely honorable and decent man.

If he was honorable, why did he lie about the oil shortage and the World had ran out of Oil.

I think it’s fair to say that the Ford and Carter presidencies were both mostly defined by what they couldn’t overcome.

To Jimmy Carter’s credit, he nominated Paul Volcker to be Fed chairman. Volcker was just what the doctor ordered as inflation continued to be a nagging problem until 1982.

But I could never understand why both Ford and Carter refused to get rid of the Nixon-era price controls on domestic oil. They had obviously backfired spectacularly. Reagan undid them in the first weeks of his presidency and oil quickly ceased being a major millstone for our economy.

Amen. Carter got destroyed in 1980. The GOP got destroyed in 2008. Harris just got soundly beaten by Trump. The public usually gets it right.

Volcker with his 22% interest rates put a lot of farmers and small businesses out of business! The guy was a disaster!

This is like getting angry at a surgeon for all the lacerations, bleeding, bruises and various other bad things incurred during life-saving surgery.

Volcker was not responsible for the inflation that necessitated sky-high interest rates. He was the man charged with getting it tamed -- which he successfully did. If you want to have a discussion about the bad policies which touched it off, we can have that discussion. It wasn't any one single thing. But I'll say this much: a couple of really bad things happened in or around August 1971.

I assume you're referring to his "Moral equivalent of war" address? If so, I think it's worth embedding that here so people can know the context.

Clearly, Carter had been given and had accepted bad advice. However, even in the harshest light, this is no reflection on his character. It was not uncommon for energy policy people to hold these views at that time. And those are the ones who had President Carter's ear.

I agree with the conclusion Thomas Firey (the author of the above-linked piece) made that the right lesson to take away from Carter's "moral equivalent of war" speech isn't anything about Carter, but to learn how effective prices in a free market are to dealing with resource constraints, if only we're willing to let them.
