when he wants to be. He gave Smith fits when he was on him. Smith looked very ordinary out there.
Rice is extremely quick and fast. He disrupted the game yesterday. People may disagree, but I think he’s a solid PG. With a better coach he can be really good. Doubt he stays.I have not watched this season. Was this defense just this game or with a better coach could he be a factor?
He is a sophomore and needs quality around him. He is the type of kid that needs to be lifted up. When TG and Leal play well, Rice is pretty good.Rice is extremely quick and fast. He's already proven what he can be...last year at Washington State. A better coach would have him as one of the better guards in the conference. I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. He honestly was totally up in the amish kid's face and constantly slapping at the ball. Destroyed any tempo PU had in the offense. Leal did the same when he was on him. I don't know where that "bite your ass" determination came from, but I'm glad it showed up for at least one game. If, if, if...they can keep that up, this team might actually do a little damage. Should be fun to watch.when he wants to be. He gave Smith fits when he was on him. If I'm Painter...I "start" working hard on initiating the offense differently. If for no other reason, than to have a different look for games like yesterday. Something as simple as early kick ups the sideline. They've run a lot of stuff in the past with Braden playing off the ball a lot, setting inverted back screens, coming off screens himself.I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. Also needs to be sat when he makes bad decisions. Same that MM has needed for most of 2 years. He finally got sat and what happened? I definitely think Rice could be "coached up" into a really good player, but I don't think he's been getting that coaching in his time here.He is a sophomore and needs quality around him. agree, I hope he stays, with the right next coach, could be really good on both ends of the court, every game, not just hit-n-miss like he's been lately. Also needs to be sat when he makes bad decisions. In Rice's case, I would think he felt like he needed to redeem himself after the last Purdue game. Cox wore him out last game. He just physically punked him, made him at best a non factor. It.was good to see the energy he played with.I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. He honestly was totally up in the amish kid's face and constantly slapping at the ball. You listen to Kent Sterling? He is a sophomore and needs quality around him. He is the type of kid that needs to be lifted up. When TG and Leal play well, Rice is pretty good.
yeah I thought that sounded familiar. KS said the same thing on Sunday night while he was rambling on and on in front of his camera. You listen to Kent Sterling?
I forgot we even played honestly. This team just made me very uninterested early on in the season. Its a shame they have some good games every now and again it was supposed to be almost every game.I have not watched this season. Was this defense just this game or with a better coach could he be a facts or?
He will likely have to take a paycut to stick around with a new coach. My guess is almost every single one of these guys will be gone.He is local so I hear and see him from time to time.
I root for Rice. I think he is a great kid and I hope he sticks around. He needs some more strength and a quality two gaurd to play along side with.
I'll check it out.yeah I thought that sounded familiar. KS said the same thing on Sunday night while he was rambling on and on in front of his camera.
You turn the sound up with Sterling? Interesting.yeah I thought that sounded familiar. KS said the same thing on Sunday night while he was rambling on and on in front of his camera.
One of my life philosophies: Never trust a human bobble head. You listen to Kent Sterling?
He's not a PG, he is a CG that played on very average WS team last year. He had a good game, but there are least 15 guards in the BT that are better! He's already proven what he can be...last year at Washington State. I don’t agree at all. He makes IU very difficult to press because of his speed with the ball. He’s an elite defender when he wants to be. Good ball handler. Although he gets loose and lazy at times. Better coaching would take care of that. No way in hell there are 15 pg’s in the BIG that are better than him. He's not a PG, he is a CG that played on very average WS team last year. Smith-Purdue, Gillespie-Maryland, Baldwin-PS, Blackwell-Wis, Richardson-MS, Adkins-MS, Holloman-MS,List them
You are just naming players. Half of your players listed are NOT PG’s. And some of them are not better than Rice.Smith-Purdue, Gillespie-Maryland, Baldwin-PS, Blackwell-Wis, Richardson-MS, Adkins-MS, Holloman-MS,
Thorton-OS, Rice-Maryland, Donaldson-Mich, Fears-MS, Jakucionis-Ill, Boswell-Ill, Mobley-OS, Shelstad-Oregon, Harper-Rutgers, Mack-UCLA, Clark-UCLA, McGee-Wis, and even Hardy of Iowa all have better numbers than Rice. I would take Galloway over Rice. Listed 20, probably missed a few more. I actually think the freshman for Purdue, Cox has a lot more upside than Rice, he can shoot and play good defense!

As good as he is...there's enough tape out there that shows him struggling against athletic pressure, that having something in place to deal with that, I would think, would be a priority for Painter right now.
But...he's the guy that has zero transfers on his roster right now. So maybe adjusting to realities isn't a strong suit of his...
There are teams that blitz Smith and it's usually pretty successful. I don't understand why more teams don't rush and double as soon as he reaches half court. Normally, after he.passes off once, he gets the ball back. IU did a really good job of denying him.the ball once he got rid of it. There's a reason they've lost 4 in a row. They're a.two headed monster. If you make their big two ineffective, they really don't have anyone else that can beat you. While I give great credit to our guys for their efforts, I also think something is up with Braden Smith.....he's had 3/4 mediocre to poor games in a row.
Yes he's probably our best ball handler but he's not much of a distributor and does a poor job of getting others involved. I haven't actually looked at his assist numbers but I doubt they are very good for a PG.I don’t agree at all. He makes IU very difficult to press because of his speed with the ball. I have him leaning portal. Not convinced he’s a solid Big Ten point guard. Like our entire team, he’s too inconsistent, which for a pg is probably their most important talentRice is extremely quick and fast. He disrupted the game yesterday. People may disagree, but I think he’s a solid PG. With a better coach he can be really good. Doubt he stays.

He said 15 guards, not PGs.....in fact he argued that Rice isn't a PG.
He was right in the sense that a lot of people viewed him as a CG rather than a pure PG. Carlyle was also said to be a combo guard. Rice was thought to tilt more toward ball handling, Carlyle shooting/scoring. Unfortunately, Carlyle has been worse than no help to Rice with respect to ball handling duties and his shooting obviously hasn't taken the pressure off Rice to score.
Rice's stats overall aren't as bad as I thought they'd be before I looked......for every 40 M played he's averaging 15.5 pts, 3.9 assists, 1.6 steals, 4.1 rebs, and 3.1 TOs, while shooting .466 on 2s and .313 on 3s. Last year the same #s were 17.9, 4.6 assists, 1.9 steals, 3.7 rebs. and 3.1 TOs, while shooting .51 on 2s and .275 on 3s. The most disappointing aspect of Rice's game, imo, is that he hasn't shown the leadership he was said to have displayed at Washington State and in preseason practices here.
I refer everyone back to the overall program, coaching, style, players around him, etc... He's a really good guard. He shows flashes of it intermittently. I hope the new coach and he feel he'd be a good fit in what will likely be a completely different IU program, in just about every way.He said 15 guards, not PGs.....in fact he argued that Rice isn't a PG.

Totally fair. And I do agree. Distributing and shooting are holding him back and that’s a problem for a PG. Especially distributing.Yes he's probably our best ball handler but he's not much of a distributor and does a poor job of getting others involved. I haven't actually looked at his assist numbers but I doubt they are very good for a PG.
You may be correct. He has elite speed and quickness, but doesn’t give total effort all the time. And his shooting and distributing need improvement. He also plays a bit too loosey goosey for my taste. You may be correct.I have him leaning portal. Not convinced he’s a solid Big Ten point guard. Like our entire team, he’s too inconsistent, which for a pg is probably their most important talent
Rice isn't a PG either, but all those players have better PG numbers than Rice. Rice is 29th in the conference in assists, Myles is 76th in the conference in assist/turnover ratio, Rice is 21st in the conference in steals, 106th in shooting %, 89th in 3pt %, he is 20th in FT%. Sorry Myles Rice is not in the top 20 guards in the BT! IU's other two guards pan out better than Rice. You are just naming players. Half of your players listed are NOT PG’s. Rice, absolutely is a PG. He may not be a great distributor, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t a PG.Rice isn't a PG either, but all those players have better PG numbers than Rice.
