This does not change my previous stance. I spent some time reading about Beard's domestic violence case. I get that charges were dropped and she changed her statement stating she wasn't choked during the attack but there was physical evidence of an attack. There a lot's of motivations that could have led her to change her statement. I believe in second chances and I believe he is getting one. While I think he would win big at IU, spouse abuse isn't something that I can look past. To me the only things more egregious are child abuse rape and murder. I'm sure I'm not alone in these feelings. I've seen the argument that this isn't a morality job it's a coaching job and I get that I only have four morality requirements no history of child abuse, wife beating, rape or murder. Those are hard stops for me.
I always have felt hitting a girl is about as low as you can go. However, I have seen girls that should be knocked out in situations. You have read more about this than I have but no idea how nuts she was. Could be all him for sure.
I doubt he will ever do this again tho. More likely to break a tv with a bat in front of her next time.
I'm sure Dolson will find the juice isn't worth the squeeze with CB ... and I'm sure he realizes there are solid candidates out there who don't choke and bite.
What you would understand if you had more life experience perhaps, like those of us who have careers that involve dealing with these kinds of situations often, is that it can be very easy for a spouse or significant other to get tarred and feathered as a “wife beater” when sometimes nothing could be further from the truth. Sometimes people who weren’t actually the aggressors get charged when they defend themselves. None of us can really know the truth about Beard’s situation from just a police report. It’s impossible and that’s why DV is different from those other things on your list of disqualifiers…
I may be in the minority.....but I think that there are a handful of viable coaching options that are as good as Chris Beard. He checks all the boxes....but there are 3 or 4 who also do, who may be persuadable. I get that Rick Pitino endorsed Beard...but Pitino himself benefitted from a second chance after a dark episode, and can relate to it. So that endorsement really doesn't move the needle for me. This is a selection that IU cannot miss on. Frankly, there is no such thing as a "sure thing" given today's landscape of portal and NIL. Its semi-pro basketball, like it or not. Beard would likely get a tailor-made contract, complete with conduct clauses that may not exist for other candidates...who knows? But there are options which include Beard. Look at all of them.
I would challenge everyone on here to think about if your worst moment in life was made public to all. I’ll assume you’d want grace and forgiveness and not lose your career, etc. If Beard has a history of unacceptable behavior it will come up during vetting. If this was a one off , people make mistakes , learn from those mistakes, and then move on. If that’s the case he should be the target. We are not getting Stevens , May , Donovan , Pitino , Pearl , Oats , etc. And with the state of the program , going for a D2 should not be an option.
I work in pediatric health care and my experience is the opposite. I see lots of victims that do not get their justice. Somethings are hard to prove. Being a victim becomes an illness and many, many, many go back to the abuser. Some even to their demise. It might be because of my life experience that I'm so sensitive to the topic.
Not true. They can ask you. You don’t have to answer. Plus his charges are public.
IMHO Hoosier Hoops has zero margin of error due to the 25+ years of bad decisions. They have to get this right with a proven D1 coach who can flip it similar to Pope , Louisville, etc. program is in life support. I understand the Cig comparisons and get it, but if they miss again , program will be finished.
The charges were dropped, end of story. IU can’t make this information public in an interview.
Cig was a low risk hire, if they hit on him great. If he didn’t win…well it’s Indiana football. Not much pressure on missing that hire
Lmao. They can make it a condition in his contract if they want. Anything goes if he signs it. Will they? Probably not. Most likely it won’t be addressed at all.
Nah, we have already been in that position for many years. The next coach will be responsible for getting us out of the situation we have been in for quite some time. It just takes 10-15 years to become a run of the mill team. IU is that but we have the resources to quickly be a top contender again, with the right coach.
Make what a condition? To air any past instances? Man, I hope my employer doesn’t air the time I got caught in the middle of a keg stand and got a minor in possession lol. Coach ran our asses off in practice for that one.
In fairness the statement was “we have to get it right with woody and Archie. Yet here we are still diehard morons.
It's pointless the anti beard folks are going to stay anti beard no matter what. If we hire him and they quit watching so be it. The arena will still be packed.
But you aren't making the hire and neither am I. So it doesn't really matter what we think.
