Purdue got the medicine they rightfully deserved

I have said for years that Pat Fitzgerald is THE best coach in this league. His teams play sound, tough, smart. So many people point to Urban Meyer. Shit, with that kind of talent, I bet even fpeaugh could coach them to a conference title every year.
The best measure of a coach is: does he maximize the hand he has been dealt. Fitz has a system and a profile of player he gets. He gets every ounce out of his kids. He’s a players coach. No antics. No stupidity. That program is a total family unit because of him. Amazing coach who completely “gets it” and understands the Northwestern culture from the ground up.

He does some things that really perplex me.

To me, he makes a lot of head-scratching game management decisions that require his teams to 'pick him up'.

Also, it seems to me that, unlike Iowa & MSU, two other 'over-achieving' programs, NW almost never has an above-average kicking game.....by that I mean above-average PKs & punters....and often they are quite poor.

That said, they win SO MANY games like that Purdue game last night, where you are almost certain they're going to lose. And those close wins are almost always games where they hold off the other team at the end........they don't often win on a last minute score or kick.....their defense finds a way to hold on.

I think they win for 4 reasons:
1. High quality kids
2. Who are developed and also put in positions to succeed;
3. They play hard almost all the time, and
4. They make fewer mistakes, both offensively and defensively, than the opposition.

It's interesting to contrast PF's demeanor with that of Brohm's (and CTA's). Both Brohm and CTA have kind of a manic quality about their energy. (See also PU's DC). That works very well most of the time, but PF's teams very seldom have the kind of undisciplined mistake that cost PU the game last night......that was an emotional play on the Purdue kid's part. The QB's mistakes might fall into the same category.....trying so hard to make plays that he was stupid about it. Cryst at Wisconsin has the same kind of quiet, calm determination, and you don't see many mistakes from them, obviously.

We say that, but they came out in the second half and played not to lose offensively. They came up just short on third down at least 4 times simply because of the conservative play calling. Give PU credit, but NU gave them the opportunity. All NU had to do was basically score once in H2 and it is over. That wasn't great coaching. Great to see Trent's son play well, awesome family and the kid has come a long way.
Isn’t that what good teams do, take advantage of opportunities presented? If no opportunities are presented you won’t be able to take advantage and the game is decided prior to kickoff. All that said, NW did not seem to push the ball upfield much in the second half.

I wouldn't say that. I have spent thousands on tickets to broadway shows, season tickets at the IU Auditorium and am vegan. You'd think because of that I'd prefer Bloomington. I prefer the more conservative atmosphere and small town values that Bloomington lacks.
You know, I understand why you're a little out of sorts after your team's tough loss last night, but you're coming across as desperate and petty with these posts.

I really don't know what "small town values" means, but I do know that Bloomington is an amazing place. It's got it all - - from one end of the spectrum to the other. It reflects and embraces different attitudes, perspectives and ideologies. Exposure to diverse viewpoints is, to me, an essential part of an education, and it's one of the reasons I encouraged my daughter to enroll at IUB. If your mindset is more insular and parochial, fine, but your criticism of Bloomington's "values" strikes me as pretty ignorant.

Agreed that TA and Brohm share a "manic" energy. TA more huggy rah rah and Brohm more in your face.

BTN had a episode on PUs training camp. One of Brohms scenes was him addressing the team in this manic state. He screams " nobody knocks you down". "If somebody accidentally touches you they better be careful cause they might end up...thrown in the stands". I think we saw the results of that with 2 min to play last night.

Keep in mind that Northwestern was rotating two QBs and Green’s son didn’t exactly move the ball that well. He evened out as the game went on but the only shot to move that team by throwing is with Thorson.
Thorson was a 4-star QB out of high school and Green was a walk-on. It was pretty evident.
Green started the game really rattled.

Green missed a wide open WR with the ball inside the 10 and they settled for a field goal. On that series he missed a guy crossing over the middle.

Yep, agreed. This in addition to the points I made.

Way better everything.

Speaking of Purdue...

Did I miss the point in the game where NW was up 21. Thought I watched it pretty closely. Did Purdue get that Nose tackle from the school that was on Last Chance U? That dumb penalty at the end looked like something he would do.

That kid from Last Chance U signed with Tennessee.

One interesting tidbit from that show:
The coach of Independence, Jason Brown, said he had one D-1 offer coming out of high school: Indiana University.

His arch rival coach, who he hates with a passion, Jeff Sims, was the Director of Player Recruiting at IU under Wilson.

Brohm was outcoached in every sense of the word. Too much hype for a guy who beat several bad or depleted teams last year, like us. Hes another Kevin Wilson. His teams fold. They folded when we played his WKU teams. Take Nick Holt away and it would be even worse. This loss was good karma from having to listen to their pathetic IU sucks chants the whole game. Maybe they should worry about the team they're playing?
He's a great coach and this is a silly post.
