they beat the hell out of Purdue in the big tournament, that makes it worthless and should be canceled. Purdue is the weakest team left in the field. they don't control who they play but the fact is they got lucky; it happens. When Kauffman Renn try's to bully his way to the basket Friday night he will probably end up on his ass.

B-b-but, Purdue beat a couple of SEC teams back in November! Then rode that all the way through a lackluster closing stretch in Big 10 play. That should easily overcome the meaningless data you listed above, like finishing behind Michigan and losing the head to head, and Michigan actually winning the conference tournament while Purdue finished the year 3-6.

Purdue lost 6 of their last 9 games of the regular season. Their legs are shot. Teams that should be rewarded are the ones finishing the season strong.

No. I’ve said it’s worthless every year. UM won it and gained nothing for the tourney. Additionally, more games for the big ten to wear each other out. I actively root for Purdue to lose early.
But this has never been the case. It’s based on full body of work. But I agree, Purdue got tired late. Why I was ok losing in the BTT. Always advocate for losing in it.
I don't get the sampson hate in the 1st place. He just did at IU what he was on probation for doing in OK. Shouldn't have been a surprise.

1-5... and you can add in a loss to mediocre Indiana team. Their only win against an NCAA caliber team is their home win against UCLA. And that game was tight until the last couple minutes.

So... they were good against NCAA caliber teams at home. Not very good away from home.
Them falling off at the end of the year wasn't because they were tired, its because that's when they played a handful of NCAA caliber teams largely away from Mackey Arena. The trend in results in those games didn't change much.
They're more likely to get their asses beat Friday than not...if their year long results and trends continue, that is.
I will agree they aren’t very good this year either. And the Jacobson injury hurt quite a bit. This was always about getting experience for next year though, this freshman class is going to be really good.
Teams starting out slow have been saying it forever. “It’s not how you start but how you finish.” Okay, I’ll reword it. Teams finishing weak should be penalized, especially when the late season losses may be influenced by injury to a key player. Is that less nap worthy?
If it’s never been the case it should be. I consider tired legs at season’s end a coaching mistake. Sorry, Mattie Boy’s not perfect. Good teams win their conference tournaments before winning greater things. Tired legs require a summer break to heal the abuse.

But I agree, painter isn’t perfect. Still dang good. Unfortunately he had to ride smith and TKR because Purdue is supper young and the freshman weren’t ready for bigger roles. Next year, cox, Harris, and burgess have a year of experience. Benter and Jacobson are coming off redshirt. See if Heide and Colvin are still around. I’m sure they will find a transfer big as well. I like the looks of that team. Always felt sweet 16 was this years ceiling because beyond TKR and Smith, Purdue was limited. Final 4 type season next year is my expectation.
One thing to keep in mind regarding next season’s purported success, PU is overdue for significant player(s) injury. They’ve been lucky these last few years while IU hasn’t.
For what its worth...they did lose their hot shot token tall man in their first game of the season. To be fair, he would have been a difference maker, in all likelihood. The overall impact? No one knows, as it did allow for TKR to fully breakout.
I understand your point, but I believe the pushback to your argument is in regards to seeding.
The committee used to, in the dark ages, heavily skew seedings towards how a team finished. Back in the day if a team like PU finished 8-2 they were seeded higher than if they had finished 2-8. Now, it seems that all that matters is the overall “resume”. A win in November is just as good as a win last week. For NCAA committee purposes.
Lmao. What breaks? Well first of all Michigan should have been the 4 seed. Won conference tourney, finished higher than PU and just beat them soundly twice in the last month. Second of all the only team in the tourney who got to play two double digit seeds. ( oh maybe also Michigan Stats), and finally getting to play regionals in back yard when the number one seed has to travel. I’d call that a bit of a break…
I don't think it will be that lopsided. Purdue fans have been traveling well for the last couple of years. Frontrunners: when they are good, they show. When they have a few bad years like we've lived through still selling out AH for games, they got about 8-9000 fans a game and cancelled their midnight madness. Frontrunners.
Yes, Houston is a tough matchup for PU, but they pretty much all will be. Getting to play in Indy vs Houston as the 1, c'mon, that's a pretty big break. I agree, Houston is going to beat the brakes off them, but they will do it in front of a large PU fanbase.
Not sure he held TKR up. Jacobson could still play out on the wing as a catch and shoot big man allowing TKR to operate down low.
I was aware of that, but didn’t consider him “significant” at this stage of his career. PU will be scary good next season, barring injuries.
It’s why I inserted “significant”. He very well may be good someday, but based upon college ball experience, it wasn’t likely going to be this year.
I would say losing your starting big man when he is your only one is significant. Especially when your defense relies on having a big.
Yep, we're lucky. As they say, better to be lucky than good. Now hopefully Houston will be tired out from the cross-country travel and the late game and we'll squeak by them and Kentucky and Tennessee with play to a triple over-time and the winner will be be toast. Yep, I'll take lucky any day!
Michigan didn't beat Purdue soundly twice. They got a crazy favorable whistle at home to win that game (2 point game). The B10 tourney game Purdue was worn out and it's been pretty obvious for about a month now.
Michigan's overall resume is garbage in comparison to Purdue's. Their best OOC win was vs (11)Xavier.
Purdue OTOH beat (2)Alabama and (6)Ole Miss. They also played (4)Texas A&M, (1)Auburn and (7)Marquette.
Michigan's other "tough" OOC opponents were (9)Oklahoma and (10)Arkansas.
Purdue could have dropped Texas A&M, Auburn and Marquette putting in cupcakes and still had a better OOC resume than Michigan and finished 25-8 in the regular season.
In case you can't figure that out, the number in the brackets are the seed in the tournament.
It is interesting; I recall on Selection Sunday and the days after that "those in the know" analysts on tv had High Point as the most likely to pull a big upset. So given that perception, the idea that Purdue got a break is somewhat contradicted. By the way, if you go to the ESPN.COM website and look at their NCAA Tournament contest, you will find that there were 24.4 million entries and at present no perfect brackets. The largest games that destroyed brackets were Louisville #1, McNeese #2 and High Point #3. So given that a lot of analysts and entrants thought HPU was going to win, the idea that it would be an easy win for Purdue is contradicted by the facts. There was a free market decision that High Point had a good chance to win. It wasn't just the experts picking them but lots of independent entrants as well.
But don't let the facts get in the way of your opinion.

How was it valid to claim that McNeese sucks? They beat Clemson, the #5 seed in the region. If anything, that suggests that McNeese was under-seeded. Remember, Clemson was in the E8 last year and tied for 2nd in the ACC this year. That hardly suggests that McNeese beat a bad team. If anything, the results demonstrate that the Committee should have ranked McNeese higher than they did.
