PU v PSU -3.5 tonight

Clifford just showed why Allen focused on protecting the football.

PSU went from having a chance to closeout the game, to needing to a comeback.

Didn’t get it done … now Purdue gets to play the 6 minute game for the win

That’s sort of funny because I was thinking we better beat Illinois because I’m not sure how we will do against either of these teams. We will see what we have in less than 24 hours!!!
Will we have last year's team, or the type of team from the 2 prior years?

Tomorrow night is the answer to that question.

Thoughts:
-Brohm is seemingly a very good offensive mind, but he is no “Brohmbardi”

-PU run game is not so great. Their OL is good, but not great and vulnerable to blitzes.

-PSU’s Clifford is a crafty vet. He is not always a great passer but he has great running ability and have to manage that or he can hurt you.

-PSU DB’s are very good. Long & athletic.

-Purdue has a good passing game, but definitely beatable.

-PSU - Not the PSU of old, But they do have some stud players. They too are beatable (by IU) but we will need the A game on offense and defense will need to pressure Clifford while also containing him too.

Hell, they didn't even try. Passing on 3rd and 30 was coaching malpractice.
Third and thirty I kind of understand. Throwing down the field on first down when you’re trying to run clock is admission that you don’t trust your running game. To be fair, other than their center, they’re pretty average up front, and they’re definitely not very physical.

Both teams with back-breaking plays at crucial times.
Clifford’s INT sitting on a 4 point lead and driving. Sheffield’s fumble. Brohm - Kevin Wilson had better clock management and that’s saying something.

Hard to believe that was Clifford‘s 3rd comeback, as long as he has been in Happy Valley.
Purdue overcame the first half turnover to take the lead, only to get too many penalties.
After, PSU had looked nearly pedestrian getting out scored 14 - 0 in the third quarter.

The penalties gave PSU a chance, and the Purdue defense finally broke.
The crackback block was the penalty that I thought hurt the most. It killed Purdue’s momentum.
Last season’s charmed life didn’t carry over for this game.

Overall the the team that made the fewest mistakes won.
Boiler 6-min offense didn’t overcome the penalties… and gave up running the ball.

Looks like Clifford will struggle to avoid the injury bug in his final year.

Looking at your prediction for the game it doesn't look like you want IU to play Illinois. I am looking for IU winning the game tonight.
I believe I picked IU to win in a close, low scoring game. But I’m afraid either PSU or PU would’ve been way too much for us to handle, given all of the “newness” of our team. They both have strong and experienced quarterback play, which s invaluable.

That could be a fair take for opening game. But assuming IU beats IL and gets some momentum of its own, I think both PU & PSU are beatable down the road and won’t be like it’s OSU coming to town.

Clifford had one good drive but looked pretty bad overall. PU kept it close as I thought but clock management, poor tackling, and the short screen one trick pony offense was not enough to beat a psu team that is struggling bigly.

I thought the same. I worry they both look better than we will be.
PU would have won were it not for 60 seconds at the end of the first half.

It was a good, competitive game played at a pretty high level, especially for the first game of the year. Turnovers hurt both teams, and there seemed to be too many penalties for a coach to like. But, first game sloppiness aside, those are two borderline top 25 teams that will be tough to play against.

Youre right about the end of the half really hurting them. Klatt didn’t like the jet sweep out of that formation, but the fumble occurred because the ball carrier secured it in the wrong hand and the blocking receiver disengaged, allowing the PSU corner to be available for the recovery. It was a breakdown of fundamentals.

Wrong hand is so correct. Jr. High mistake uncorrected.

Sounds like poor coaching to me...😎

That combined with grade school level clock management took a little sheen off of the Great Brohmardi's mythical status as a coaching icon 😉...

🤣🤣🤣🍺
His mistakes weren’t Nebraska bad but good grief run the football.
