pu losers again

Any school that chants IU su**s at every home game deserves to get their nose rubbed in it when they lose. And when all I hear at work is how IU su**s with 80% pu grads around me with their constant hating of IU like it’s sport. I never go to their fan page to post. But is always a good day when pu, UK, and Calipari lose.

Good thing Purdue doesn’t chant that at every home basketball game.

IU hasn’t been in the Sweet 16 in over a decade and we are making jokes about PU losing a 2 point game to a 1 seed. Houston would beat IU by 30.
so true! But you would not play them , because you have to make tourney to do that.

Love of fives is dumb
Here but now they're bums
Came the last night of madness
And it was clear Painter couldn't go on
Then the door was open but no wins appeared
The whistle blew the train disappeared
The tripple flew and the rim appeared
Saying don't be afraid
Come on, Painter (and he had no fear)
And he ran to Pete (then they started to fry)
They looked backward and wondered why (they still had no banners)
He had taken Pete's hand (they still had no banners)
Come on, Painter (don't fear the reaper)
I remember the first time I saw Dead Poets Society too. Looks like it had a greater impact on you though.

Smith was guarding the in-bounds pass and then runs out to guard Cryer on the 3 pt line after Colvin runs into a pick at the top of the circle. Smith should have stayed home. Easy to say after the fact but who did Smith think was going to cover Uzan under the bucket? UH didn’t need a three and everyone was wide so isolation play in the lane likely. He saw Cryer come open and freaked. Painter didn’t have them ready for the play.

Colvin didn’t run into a pick. Neither did Cox. Cox got pushed out higher than intended. He was supposed to have that cover. Smith was supposed to go out to cryer.

I don’t have very good resolution but Wilson bumps Colvin to the outside from a set pick position at the free throw line and as a result he completely lost Cryer.

That may have been what he was to do and so yes Painter didn’t have them ready for the play. Better a 40% shooter beats you from 3 then a 90% shot from under the basket. The player positions were what they were at the time he made the decision. Under the basket he would have contested a pass to Cryer.

Well, I'm a big departure from IU orthodoxy. I was rooting for Purdue and Indiana guys over Sampson and UH. Before you express outrage, I've been a fan of IU BB since the days of Archie Dees and Hallie Bryant. I have a longer history of loyalty to IU than most of you have years.

An added piece of irony is that I used to tutor UH athletes.

So here are are a couple of observations on the game.
  • Braden Smith was absolutely fouled with 2 seconds to go. The Houston guard Uzan pushed Smith off on a dribble drive with an extended arm. The announcers called it a foul; the referees swallowed their whistles.
  • Sampson's triple option, inbound play from under basket was genius. Braden Smith, guarding the inbound pass, X'd out to cover a double screen on the weak side. The inbounder passed to the center, stepped in, received a returrn pass and won the game.
  • Painter is a really good coach. UH is a better team than Purdue and would win 4 of 5 games in a series.
After resting against Purdue on Friday, Houston looks better today.

Sampson's biggest offense was not related to phone calls, due to the NCAA's screwy way of counting what a "phone call" was. Instead, Sampson's biggest offense was loading up the team with non-students who didn't keep their grades up.

This came to light when Sampson was fired. People forget that Crean's team was penalized some additional scholarship losses,in addition to the scholarship penalties for phone calls that IU self-imposed.

Colvin never came detached from his man…. Colvin was guarding the 3 point line.

And Colvin was touching the guy he was guarding

If Cox had responsibility for guarding the inbounds pass then he has a baseline position and can’t be pushed out too far. Smith had the only base line defensive position for Purdue when Uzan was handed the ball. I am trying to match what you say with positions on the court but having difficulty.

Smith saw player positions on the court and released from base line position to run out to the 3 pt line to guard Cryer. If he maintained baseline position, even knowing that Cryer was unguarded, then he could have strongly contested the passing lane to Cryer and also prevented the bunny. Houston may have still beaten them but higher probability of a Purdue win than the way it was played. The way that it was played Smith made a bad decision no matter what he was supposed to do according to Painter’s coaching instructions. Smith saw that he was the sole defender around the basket and still released. He saw Cryer come open and freaked. This is what Smith said-“I just didn’t want Cryer coming off to hit that shot.” So Cryer came open off a pick and Smith ran out to cover.

If Painter’s intent was to use five defenders on the four Houston inbounds players then a good defensive set if Houston has to go full court but terrible when they are inbounding under their own basket. Not fronting the inbounding player under their own basket is a weak defense but Smith still made a bad decision. If Cryer was Smith’s primary responsibility then why was he 20 ft away under their basket. If they had passed the ball to Cryer for a shot then Smith didn’t have good position for that either

If Purdue has used this odd set in similar circumstances then good scouting by UH and sure it will change next season. I really am not trying to be argumentative but trying to correlate player positions on the floor with your statements. Maybe there is some defensive genius associated with this that I fail to see.

Smith said he had a miscommunication with cox. Which, upon watching again, you can see that. The question is, was smith supposed to release and cox come down or cox going to the corner and smith staying down. Idk that the answer is known. It comes down to those two. Colvin has nothing to do with the play. I see what you are saying

Smith (or maybe Painter) made a mistake, Houston got the easy bucket. Simple as that, no deep analysis needed. Players and coaches make mistakes dozens of times a game, if they didn't scores would be a lot lower and fans would be bored.

Just to add-I can’t bring myself to say I enjoy watching Smith play for an obvious reason but I can say I really enjoy watching guards very similar to Smith play. :)
