The way I read that there will only be one 30 day Portal window... : 12/9/24 - 1/7/25 (this year)
The after Spring Practice one will be no more...

I guess we'll know within the month whether this has passed or not since it's supposed to take effect on December ninth...

Cignetti and Staff proved they can deal with this sort of tight window last year so with a year to prepare there's no reason to believe they shouldn't be able to handle things well again...

The wild card this time is that they'll probably only be one or two JMU guys in the mix but we also hopefully won't need more 18 or 19 total Portal guys versus the more than 20 plus we brought in last time around...

We would seem to be well positioned already given that we appear to check every box that a player might want in that situation... The word has to be out there nationally by now...

He's proven to be the master of the portal. Going forward, he should be able to shift more of the emphasis to traditional high school recruiting while still pulling from the portal as necessary.

Guy's a genius and I still can't believe he wasn't head coaching a P4/5 team long before this. Kudos again to Dolson. This may have been the best move by an AD at IU since Orwig hired Knight.

The other important change (if enacted) mentioned in that article is that Redshirt players will receive their 4 regular seasons games (that won't trigger burning their RS) but also be able to play in any post regular season Championships, Bowl Games and Playoff Games without having them count against their Red Shirt...

That's a Big Deal... Suddenly you've got a pool of another 20 plus relatively fresh players to go to in the post season..., and they can get their feet wet in big games...

Another difference this season is that IU will still be preparing for and playing games versus just managing the roster.

TBS, I’m sure Cig and staff will be prepared for that, too.

Don't forget that with respect to the Portal, this should be the last year in which We have the older Players Who received the free bonus COVID Year added to their Eligibility Period. This should mean fewer Players in the Portal overall, and a lesser average age of Players.

Correct me if I am wrong, I am under the impression the transfer portal window would just apply to players leaving to go into it and not necessarily that they would need to commit to a new school in that window. I very well could be misunderstanding the portal but I always thought you had that period of time to enter the portal but you could take as long as you wanted (if ever) to find a new school. Is that not the case?

I would prefer that they focus on minimizing the in season transfer portal entries. That spring portal seems important. I mean it hurt us by Blidi leaving, but also helped by getting Ponds. I think we came out ahead on that because we got a more impactful player than the one we lost.

I sometimes wonder if any of these guys who jumped in the portal are regretting their decision. If McCulley would have stuck it out he may have worked his way into a starting spot by now or at least a solid rotational player, and would have all the eyes of America watching him as part of this offense. I never really understood the explanation Blidi’s dad gave about him leaving. Something about wanting to not take opportunities from others, but looks like he was chasing an opportunity to play at a blue blood. Like McCulley he could be contributing to a dream opportunity.

It’s too bad some of these guys did not want to finish the season. It still doesn’t sit right with me that people are leaving teams mid-season. Suck it up and finish your season out and if you are still unhappy after the season that is the time to transfer. Otherwise, to me it’s not a good look when players abandon their brothers before the job is done. Could you imagine if this was allowed in the Military? Day before a battle a few people in your squad decide they want to leave and pursue their options at a different service academy. IMO this is part of the tap out mentality that makes players today feel it’s okay to take yourself out on 3rd down when you are tired. Will yourself to finish what you started when your brothers are counting on you.

I think the issue here around what you're saying is that the situation can actually require this result at times.

When EJ Williams went into the portal, he explained that he wanted to redshirt so he could have surgery so that he could play at full strength next season. CCC (according to EJ) said that by doing that now, he would be quitting on the team, and he wouldn't have a scholarship available.

That is not a dig at Cigs as he likely wants to go in another direction with that scholarship at seasons end and it's of no fault to EJ because I can understand his perspective. It's a catch-22 really.
