David Ballou is in his first year in 2017 as co-director of strength and conditioning at Notre Dame. He has held the credential as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (with distinction) since 2001. Ballou was a finalist for the 2014 NSCA National High School Strength Coach of the Year Award.
Ballou comes to Notre Dame after one year as the physical conditioning coach at IMG Academy. His work was most evident in speed gains and injury prevention. IMG had seven players laser-timed in the 40-yard dash at under 4.5 seconds in 2016. A year prior, not one of that group was even close to approaching 4.5-flat. As far as injury prevention, 21 of the 22 players on the 2016 squad who started the season opener also started the season finale.
Prior to working at the IMG Academy, Ballou served as the head strength and conditioning coach at Avon High School, a top tier 6A school in Indiana, for 14 years. Avon won six team state championships in multiple sports and seven other teams were finalists. Ballou assisted in the development of 80 NCAA Division I athletes while serving as the strength coach at Avon.
Ballou was a three-year letterwinner and fullback at Indiana University. He was recognized as the Hoosier Strength Challenge Champion. Ballou graduated in 2001 from IU with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. He earned his master’s degree in human movement from A.T. Still University in 2015.
