The problem is with the 10% that even a "swift kick in the ass" doesn't make any difference.

A chronic alcoholic will continue drinking to his detriment until he is forced to seek outside help. The 12-Steppers use a circular explanation:

"If you can get sober all on your own, then you aren't an alcoholic of our type." For the "alcoholic of our type", the only solution is through AA.

Yes, I think you are just trying to define it way too narrowly. Limiting "alcoholic" to only the very worst, most hopeless cases. I think the rest of us are trying to point out that a huge, huge chunk of people who aren't that bad are nevertheless alcoholics, as well.

An alcoholic has a bottle in their drawer at work. An alcoholic drinks as soon as they get up….they drink all day, every day. They are physically dependent on alcohol. They will drink mouthwash while on the job.

They are not just drinking after work.

I think you're using a definition that is stronger and more restrictive than the most use, maybe based on only a physical addiction to alcohol?

If you want to limit alcoholism to only those who go through the symptoms you describe, I guess that's fine, but I think it's important to know that those without those particular symptoms can still be living a very dangerous and unhealthy life with their psychological addiction and periodic/recurring binges.

Had an old partner who was an alcoholic. One day a buddy of mine and Cortez’s came in town to visit and I was introducing him around at work and I go ahh shit he’s on the phone. My buddy goes I don’t think so. He was sitting behind his big desk passed out with the phone on his ear.

Best ever. We all made him go to rehab. So he’s at rehab at some group thing and this lady in a massive cast comes hobbling up and sits down next to him. After a while he turns to her and goes boy you really did yourself in.
